I just brought a Xgamer case and it has a temperture probe w/ a lcd read out on the front of the case. I would like to use it to monitor cpu temperature I'm installing an ASUS P4P800-D board with a P4 2.6G 800 FSB, where would be the best place to place the probe? Directly on the chip?, on top of the thermal compound? The HSF i will be using is a Thermaltake Spark 7. Thanks

i asked this before and they suggested as close without touching the CPU, taped to the bottom of the heatsink

right now its reading 84.6F/29.2C

and MBM5 is reading 41C....i do have the abit temp bug tho

Yes you can't put it directly on top of cpu because it will reduce the surface of the contact with hs.
What I usually do is put it directly next to cpu under the bracket. In a way that the tip of temp sensor is touching the side of cpu.

chrisinjax, I'm in a very simliar situation to you and made the same post maybe a week ago. Some people suggested putting the probe UNDER the CPU itself in between the pins. I've got mine near the bottom of my SLK900U right now and it's working fairly well. I'm sick of taking off my SLK and re-applying Artic Silver and all that so I'm leaving it where it is for now, but I like mroleg's idea of finding somewhere under the bracket and touching the side of the CPU.

Thank you seismik. Here is the reason why I do it that way:

If you attach sensor to the bottom of the heatsink - it will give you the temp of that sink which is being cooled down by the fan so you will probably get about 2-3 degrees difference between surface of the sink and surface of the cpu.
In my application the tip of the sensor is touching actual cpu which will give most accurate readout IMHO.
