I watch this YT channel it's some dude in Florida who has a dealership for high-end used cars. Someone had bought a CT from him for $125k and 3 months later was calling back wanting to trade it in towards a Porsche 911. The dealer offered him $75k and the dude agreed. I've never seen deprecation like that lol.

$50k in 90 days is not even something I can comprehend.

I know I always whine about the lack of a $39k model, but the upcoming $60k base model is still TWENTY-THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE lol. I could buy a whole Honda Civic for that lol.

You could buy way more than a single Civic at that price point (MSRP starts ~$24k).

Oh, I meant for the price difference lol

Why are Civics over $20k now?? Even the cheap cars aren't cheap anymore!!

Oh, for the price difference.

Well, I think the bigger deal isn't that you could get [insert other new car] for price difference. It's that you could literally buy >1 [insert other new car] for the actual price being charged. Americans are so well off, they just have no clue when they are regularly plonking down huge sums of money (or taking the loans) for unnecessarily large or luxury vehicles.

They're bigger and more featured than previous generations.
But you also have to account for inflation. A quick Google says the MSRP of a 1990 civic was 8700. Which is 21700 in today's dollars. So you're paying almost the same, adjusted for inflation, but getting a much safer, cleaner, and comfortable car

The average new American car is like $750/mo. My last apartment cost that much lol.

I checked out the new Kia Soul recently. I hate the new design (miss the bug-eye headlights!), but dang, it's awesome technology-wise! Also starts at $20k tho...iirc my 2nd Soul was like $12.7k or something lol:

The average is a misleading statistic because there is a hard floor but no ceiling. Median would be better, but that number isn't as outrageous to report and is this harder to come by.

And Americans have been suckered in by their relative financial success and marketing that pushed them into vehicles with much higher profitability margins and/or longer loan finance terms.

My dealership buddy said that 84-month loans are pretty much the norm these days

This kind of stuff is obscene. Dealerships should be crushed into a tiny cube and purchasing a vehicle should be more akin to buying any other widget. There is a set price and you pay it.

I'm sure the handful of "good negotiators" would be displeased if that were to pass, but the majority of people would benefit from such a move.

The whole negotiation thing is a shell game. I have some buddies at various dealerships. The game is to tack $3,500 onto the bare-minimum profit price & then remove the included floor mats & whatnot. This gives the customers a feeling that they "won" when they take a thousand or two off & get free car washes for life, while also making the dealership & salesman additional cash. The trick is to find what you want & then buy it via email from the dealer's Internet sales rep, with at-home delivery! This skips all of the in-person pressure & the artificially inflated price!

Tesla's approach is interesting because you just pick what you want & they deliver it to you. Everyone I've talked to who has ordered one has said that not having to deal with haggling was the best part of the experience lol. But there ARE some people who NEED to haggle, haha!

Yup. To keep the monthly payments low. Because the average/median American doesn't understand how loans work.

But also, we've created a society where a car is a requirement. So you need reliable transportation to get to work in the first place. Car breaks down? No income, AND you have to shell out for thousands in repairs on top. So a new/reliable vehicle is almost a requirement rather than a luxury. Because a used car that's not under warranty is a roll of the dice.
(Granted, the median car price still says people are not opting for small/budget vehicles)

I hope they keep depreciating, I actually wouldn't mind one for the novelty aspect, but I'm not paying more than like 15k for it.
I feel like if the cyber truck starts selling at 15k then Tesla would be in such trouble id avoid them entirely given how connected they are

I previously stated I'd pay a max of $5k for one. I'll have to retract that. Due to odds of vandalism, I wouldn't go more than $1k. I still don't know what I'd do with it aside from an oversized grocery getter, but I'd consider it disposable. If anything other than trivial parts broke, I'd take the battery out, and scrap the rest.

Build a shed around it and use it as a massive residential battery!

That's exactly what I was thinking. I use very little electric, so even with my modest sun exposure, I bet I could keep it charged enough to run my house.

edit:
I left out the part about a small solar array.
