I can kind of see their logic. In winter that whole area is full of snow and ice and some might fall in the crack when it's opened. You can scrape it but you're never going to get all of it. I would rather make sure it closes properly then have to keep messing around with trying to figure out where it's binding.
You do know that most people don't live in the frozen north?

Obviously in the tradeoff between cutting someone's finger off and understanding why your trunk is getting blocked, the correct engineering solution is to cut someone's finger off.

Or you can just not put your finger there. There are lot of places in every day world where one shouldn't put their finger, it would be ridiculous to try to idiot proof every single one of them. Great if a company does it, like those table saws that stop immediately if it detects a finger, but it shouldn't be expected either.

So you're leaning on the car chatting to someone and your kid presses the "chop finger" button. Or worse you're chatting to someone and your kid is leaning on the car and you press the "chop finger" button.
This is something that we fixed a long time ago with electric windows. It should absolutely be expected that automated closing shit on a car shouldn't chop bits off!

-*Thinks about the number of times my finger has accidentally gotten pinched in something, but not cut off because I was able to stop it* Dude you're being deliberately obtuse.

No I just think it's dumb to expect everything to be bubble wrapped and idiot proof. Instead of tempting fate and expecting something to be safe, just don't do those things. Same idea as not putting your hand on a hot stove.

- I would totally agree with you if this was for some reason the *only* way the thing could work, but it's obviously not since so many other people have designed it differently and it's not some massive national crisis that automatic doors are not closing cause something is in the way.

It's like if someone designed elevator doors to close and the elevator to move *no matter what was in the way* (like those, you know, horror movies)

A stove cannot cook things without getting hot. The stove top is not generally a surface a person might rest their hands or be expected to handle while in use. You also do not immediately get 3rd/4th/5th degree burns accidentally touching a stove either. Not a great example.

Escalators are another good example. It's fairly difficult to design any safety mechanism in one because they don't know if the resistance they feel is another person getting on or someone getting stuck. So, don't screw around with escalators. Pretty sure I would get my fingers crushed if I slammed the tailgate or hood of my F150 on them as well. If a product has a bad design that makes it more likely for something bad to happen then yeah it should be addressed but it's hard to think of every possible thing.

Maybe Tesla just needs to put this sticker inside the trunk lol:

Another satisfied customer.

Here is a random video the YouTube gods recommended to me. Brand new CT has several issues with it already.

Also saw one in the wild last night, instantly knew what it was from the headlights. Didn't really get much of a look at it though.

They went "above and beyond!" Umm, you just bought a 100K vehicle that was bad driving off the lot, making you yell at them and giving you a tow/taking all day to fix the issue is not going above and beyond. Also in what world would a coolant leak not be covered by the warranty unless it was obvious road damage?

I am sorry, this is human stupidity. Not the vehicle's fault if you purposely stick your finger where you know it can be crushed.
This individual act was human stupidity. The design is a company putting profits ahead of safety. It'll be just a matter of time before it's a kid's hand that is smashed. Automatic doors need to have force sensors on them, or be designed to not have enough force to crush something.

I have kids. I can guarantee that one of them would be leaning on the car as bonnet closed or they'd set it to close while someone else was putting stuff in.

That guy is an idiot though.
I have a friend that had hit me in the head with automatic tail gates multiple times in multiple different vehicles. The last time he did it, he was 41. All of them bumped my head and went back up.

This is a 100K car. Not an industrial metal shear. My mom's cheap Hyundai has no problem going up when it makes contact. But even in industrial settings pinch points are eliminated as much as possible, with automatic cutoff sensors and deadman switches.

Cars have had hoods since the beginning. How many people do you think have been hurt by closing hood? Is the CT hood closing mechanism deficient? I would say so. But to intentionally put your finger in harms way, you lose your right to complain.

As I said, this guy was an idiot. That doesn't mean it isn't a terrible fucking design. There is an obvious difference in manually operated engine hood and an automatic truck lid that can be operated by remote control. Further, most cars have some what rounded edges.

-Jesus Christ why does everyone's IQ drop when talking about anything six degrees from Elon.

No one is saying the moron who deliberately put his finger in the way of a closing hood is in the right. No one who deliberately puts themselves in harms way is entitled to any sympathy.

However anyone who accidentally has a hand or finger in the way of the hood when it closes is going to be in for a real surprise.

I managed to catch my finger closing a power window... First digit of my middle finger got bruised and the fingernail fell off. I blamed only myself.

Cool, if you want to spend 100K to have your kid's hand amputated, I guess that is on you. I'd rather spend money on things that care about proper/safe design.

Also power windows were redesigned ~30 years ago to limit their power, which is why you bruised your finger instead of losing it.

I am not defending CT, I am criticizing the idiot. Also, power gate safety stop is usually measuring the front edge of the gate/hood and not near the hinge. Even with a more sensitive setup his finger is probably fucked as well. It's just not a spot to stick your extremities.

I would not defend Phony Stark lol.

I was thinking it was weird for you to defend the CT here.

Most auto hatches the hinges are high up, so less likely to get a body part stuck in it. This hinge is right at hand height.

That's the part that gets me, he tested it first and when he saw it snapped the twig you'd think he would have at minimum, tried with a bigger one to see what damage it does, but nope, straight to the finger lol.

It would be like using a GFCI tester on an outlet and it fails the test, so you stick your finger in it.
