Here's my (possibly mistaken) take on it:

It's become an issue because Bush wanted to put forth a guest worker amnesty program. This has been on the drawing boards for months. As it moved forward, the media began to cover it and the public, already concerned about job losses, foreign outsourcing, and economic issues in general, became aware of it. Constituents then began calling their Congressmen to tell them that they think it's awful and that they'd better oppose illegal immigration if they want their votes. Also, the threat of terrorists crossing the border is a concern. As a result, the politicians couldn't simply roll over and get on Bush's guest worker amnesty bandwagon; rather they had to do something to show that they support securing the border and reducing the number of illegals.

I suspect that the desires of constitutents is the real reason for all of the hullaballoo. Otherwise the politicians would have bowed down to the interests of the wealthy and let in the cheap labor.

Well not according to this Poll. It says the American Sheeple like the illegal Mexicans here;

No, it can't be done. They own homes, cars, have kids in school, etc.. You can't just boot them out. Its too late. Learn to live with them because they aren't going to round up millions of Mexicans and ship them back home. If someone really has a problem, move up to Michigan or Wisconsin or Minnesota. We hardly have any Mexicans up here.

Well, I live in South Dakota and they are showing up here. As a matter of fact we just built a large turkey processing plant and the whole construction crew were Mexicans. The whole office is Mexican with the exception of a couple of people and after it was open 2 months the conditions were so bad that half the workers walked off the line. Guess who replaced them?

That's right, Mexicans.

And yes, it can be done, but this problem didn't just develop overnight, it took a long time to get to these proportions and it will take a while to fix.

Yes you will find people who denigrate and speak hatefully about others there just as you can find in this forum or the demacratic undergroud forum, if you want to pick an chose what you read to fit your own agenda. But if you go in and read in a fair minded manner you will also find people who make good solid arguments for their beliefs and call those people down for that kind of crap just as I've seen here, and just as it should be.

I've made my beliefs on this issue of immigration known in earlier posts on this thread and make no apologies for them.

Well everyone agrees that it's a problem, however you can't just start deporting people - like the o/p said they own cars, rent houses, have kids here etc. You need to cut the demand for illegals by making it a felony to employ then AND you need to grant amnesty to all the illegals already in here. That way you can get them to pay taxes and stop the influx.

Of course oit's a problem, I just think it's not an insurmountable problem. Dirst secure the boarder and punish the employers. Then put together a plan for allowing them in. Then you tackle the 12 million illegals arlready here, one case at a time. Some will need deported, some won't.

I still maintain that if they can't read and write basic English then they should be deported. I believe a common language is what keeps the American melting pot working.

Ugh- the American flag should never be prevented from being flown. This is America.......it doesn't matter if it was "both flags" as you say. Why are we allowing a foreign flag to dictate what we can do with our own? If violence was happening due to the Mexican flag then ban it........

Someone somewhere in our government needs to grow a set and start enforcing the rules, whether immigration policy or flag etiquette. Unless, of course, the current government actually WANTS things this way.

What could their motive be? Deflating wages, inciting civil strife (divide and conquer), and doing what they seem to do best -- profiting immensely from the whole sordid affair.
