Conflict seems to bring out the worst in people, and common sense flies out the window. The rigid, calm and thoughtful approach to conflict in Art of War almost seems like a contradiction, moreso than common sense at least. Conflict resolution without conflict is another nugget that flies in the face of common sense.
The teachings can be extended down to individual conflicts, but if you look around there is no shortage of interpersonal conflicts going on. It would seem the "simple" teachings are not as common as you might think. The beauty of the book is that it is so simple.
