The crazy world of overclocking

I know this pretty common but I didn't think it would actually happen. When i was first overclocking I couldnt go above 2.55 Ghz no matter what voltage without it failing prime95 in under 5 minutes. The other day I was experimenting a bit and now its stable at 2.6Ghz. Runs prime95 all day long with no errors. I realize its not a huge gain but it seemed to have hot a brick wall at 2.55 earlier. Now I just have to get my watercooling so I don't see anymore 65 degrees celcius plus temps :roll:

I had the same results, 2.5x was highly unstable so i jumped to 2.6x and all is well, prime 95 as long as I want

I think you misunderstood. I never used to be able to reach 2.6 Ghz stable but after a while runing at 2.55 Ghz i was able to reach 2.6 stable. Thats really wierd that it would be unstable at one speed and stable at a higher speed.

If you just built your system recently then its likely that your thermal compound set properly and is now conducting heat better, if not then I dont know :/

I built my system over three months ago so I don't think thats it. Hey I'm not going to complain.

Well, I am trying the same right now and it is so unstable that prime fails within 5 seconds.

If there is a change in ambient temperature, that could certainly affect your overclocking results as well. Everything in your computer works better in cooler air, including CPU, power supply, motherboard, and memory.

Well, I am trying the same right now and it is so unstable that prime fails within 5 seconds.

What voltage are you using? I had been running 2.5x @ 1.4 -1.45 so I up-ped the voltage to 1.5 in the bios when running 2.6x
