Hey all,

Could ya help a noob out by answering a few questions for me? What does everyone think will happen to the current p4 prices when the new 875 chipset comes out? Do you think that there will be semi-resonably priced p4 with 800mhz fsb (i.e, < 300)? Do you think the first of the new 875 boards by intel will be any good, or would waiting until asus or gigabyte or msi etc... put out an 875 board be a better idea? Don't you need a really high clock speed to take advantge of the 800mhz fsb? I heard that intel is going to produce 2.4 w/800 fsb. Isn't that too slow?

Thanks

You do need a higher clock speed to take full advantage of an 800mhz fsb, *but* a 2.4 running at an 800mhz fsb shows anywhere between a 3 to 20% performance improvement when paired with dual DDR400 ram over a 533mhz fsb 2.4ghz p4. It depends on the task of course. As for Canterwood, yes it will be well priced and yes I'd wait for an 875 from Asus or Abit, etc if you want overclocking capabilities but they should have their boards ready to release about the time Intel officially releases theirs.

The new 875/865 boards use a new manufacturing process thats very cost effctive so figure on release their prices will run what the mid to top of the line 845PE/GE motheboards cost now. As for the P4s, they will be releasing 800mhz FSB versions for the 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.8, and 3 ghz p4s. Also the 800mhz FSB re-releases of the older processors will all have hyperthreading enabled as well. I'd expect the 2.4ghz to probably be in the affordable range, but I'd expect the others will lean more towards premium price for a couple of months, although I can't say *that* for certain.

Also, if you are going for performance, be sure to get an 875 as it has slightly better memory performance than an 865 mobo due to improvements in the circuitry which Intel dubs "Turbo mode". 875 is also the only chipset that will support dual DDR in ECC mode. Finally, if you do go the 800mhz route, be sure to get two sticks of DDR400. Sure you can run lower, but you get best performance when you pair up that 800mhz fsb with dual DDR 400 because of the clock speeds.

I don't they'll be cheap... and i think Asus already has their canterwood and springdale boards done... just waiting for intel to officially release the chipset.

Well depends on how you define *cheap* but I doubt the lowest end 800mhz processors will cost in the 3ghz 533 fsb range right now. My best guess would be a 2.4 800mhz FSB processor will likely cost around the current price of a 2.8ghz P4 then the prices will rise from there. I'd expect around July/August for when the processors begin to oh-so-slowly move towards the lower end of the price spectrum.

There was a post here recently about HT adding $15 to a similar non-HT cpu. So the 2.4 HT will cost $15 more than the current.

This is dead on. A 2.4/800 will be negligably more expensive than a 2.4/533. It's worth the wait.
