With the end of RC5 not too far away, what will we do with all our processing power? I think that team Ananadtech will storm Seti and we will one day rise to #1!

um....rc5 could take another couple years....or it could be over tomorrow We have other projects to work on as well, such as OGR (coming soon actually) which many of us will do, and S@H which many members do (though not as many as rc ), and Gamma Flux (we're soon to be moving onto Gamma Flux 2), and some other projects are on their way.

Has a good point though. Keeping the team together to "power" into particular tasks has appeal. There is no doubt that other challenges are in the wind and already their proponents are canvassing for support.

It would be cool though for at least a short time, to "unleash" TA on one project after another. Sort of stomp the opposition and move on. Kind of a Borgish thing to do!

I would say: Proceed with Dnet contests, and run OGR.
Than we'll see who wins: AT or DPC
With a start on fair bases, both about the same size.
And without a PhF.

Since the bulk of my herd is made of corporate computers (about 80%) and I've heard many more stories of SETI instability, I would never venture to run SETI on those machines. Add to that the fact that I don't believe little green men exist, and I would say that there is pretty much a ZERO possibility that I will ever be running SETI.

The DNet client on the other hand has be UNBELIEVABLY well behaved and I've not had a single glitch with it in a year and a half. I would probably go over to whatever DNet contest the majority of the team went to.

Joe, you might want to see how the new SETI 3.0 client behaves before deciding to only run DNet stuff.

<< You missed the fact that he doesn't believe in ETI's . After all, since evolution didn't occur how could another civilization come to exist? Since the Bible only says that God created us another intelligent civilization isn't possible. That about right Joe? >>

Actually it doesn?t say that he never created any others anywhere... I fact, I tend to think that there may be thousands of other races out there.
God has lived (or been) forever. To think that we (and other things on the earth) are God's only creation seems small minded to me...
With all that power, how could he not be creating many things...

Now whether or not god will let us contact any other race is a totally different matter.

I agree with office boy, but lets keep this ON TOPIC. We could move on to other tasks from distributed, but the seti team is really lagging and could use a boost. If we split up the team with maybe half on SETI half on OGR we probably will win nothing.

The end of RC5 is not 2 years away. The number of people cracking continues to grow every day and the right key most likely will not be the last one.

I purposely did NOT say why I don't believe in aliens so as to not veer into the off topic realm. If anyone would like to discuss those things, post in OT and I'll do my best to discuss.

But OT gets so messy...
You must remember past discussions there Joe.
And a thread about whether or not aliens exit seems appropriate here in D.C. considering Seti and all. (well IMHO anyway )

I'm sorry Joe, I shouldn't have made a stab at you here in the DC forum. I'm editing my post to take out those comments. And I believe that we've already had plenty of discussion on this and similar topics in OT, so I'll not even venture to start another one .

I really try to avoid off topic, things get so hot in there.

but Seti@home does seem like a major waste of time though, i mean, there are more stars than there are keys in a hundred RC5 projects combined, each with about a dozenn planets, and to scan all of them, at every frequency? what a waste of time and money, and there are poeple right here on earth starving

Now the question is, how would you like to feed people with processing power?

But seriously, I agree the SETI search isn't the best way to find other planets with life. We need to actually build the telescopes to see them. To make telescopes that big, they need to be composed of several smaller scopes in an arrangement called an interferometer. And it turns out that the best spacing of a number of telescopes for an interferometer is the Optimal Golomb Ruler for that number. So I figure the best way to do SETI@Home is to do OGR! (But that's just me. )

hey thats a good idea, distributed computing to end hunger!

we could have all the CPU's simulating agricultural scenarios,

or break down raw geological data, finding untapped natural resources

im sure there are tons of ways to put the power of distributed computing to work for mankind. i just came up with those in a few seconds

That is a great idea. We should use our processing power for the good of mankind. Come on people, lez save the world. Now how should we start?
