Right to repair is a good thing. However, messing up with an engine is not as likely to kill you as puncturing a LiIon battery pack. I would take it into a third party shop trained to work on EVs.
We will agree to disagree. The battery packs are designed to survive under a car. Puncturing a battery would be pretty low on my list of things to worry about. Dead shorting a battery that is designed for massive discharge. Yipes! But again, right tools for the job.

Different skill set and comfort level going from standard wrenching to high voltage electrical.

Plus a lot of the big packs are sealed with industrial adhesives for structural reasons.

On top of that is the equipment required to remove and replace a 1000 lb battery pack from the bottom of a vehicle.

It makes home mechanic repair MUCH less likely IMO.

Though independent shops will spring up that will do pack repairs, as they already are in what is still early days.

A decade from now, you will likely have the option of buying a reconditioned pack with a warranty, for significantly less than new, having it installed at independent shops, just like you can have your engine or transmission repaired/replaced at an independent mechanic today.

You would consider rebuilding an engine standard wrenching? Is buying a cherry picker or hoist to take out a 5-800lb engine trans combo that much different that buying jacks to drop a battery pack?

I agree the sealants are an issue. I've seen some use an oscillating tool and a scraper blade to cut the joint. The structural battery that Tesla wants to build would be impossible to do anything with

It will be interesting to see where this goes in 10-20 yrs. Will I be able to drop a battery and take it to autozone for a reman one? Will this be moot as some batteries can do 3000 cycles to 80%? What if a battery can do 5000 cycles @ 200mi per cycle?

Yeah... but then the Leaf came out and made all of those dire battery predictions a reality!

But that's a special, well explained case of having no thermal management system. Find another EV that has no thermal management for it's battery.

Tesla's "No, you can't just replace the dead cell, spend $$,$$$ for a replacement battery pack!" policy isn't helping with my fear relief, either.

Tesla isn't stopping you, they just aren't going to do it for you. There are reasons why paying significant money to replace a couple of cells on an old pack isn't wise.

I, for one, welcome our ICE-free future just for the noise reduction.
Except for a small percentage of vehicles with after market mufflers or other alterations, the noise from traffic is from tires on pavement.
Once a vehicle reaches 25> MPH, most of what you hear is the tire noise.

It only takes a small percentage to make a mess of it.

Idiots with altered sports bikes seem like to racing down the street at full throttle at 2AM waking the whole neighborhood.

Or another factor is the idiots "Rolling Coal" in their diesel trucks.

The sooner that small percentage of idiots are separated from the ICE, the better.

Uh, Tesla battery packs automatically adjust to deal with dead batteries, shorts, etc. They have literally thousands of battery cells in each pack, anything short of such an automated control system would be a disaster!

Honda and GM partnering up
Two idiots getting together = still idiots. Until GM gets rid of Mary "you led and it matters" Barra, they will continue to be the joke like their "Ultium" EV platform. I'm no longer as bearish about Ford's future since Jim Farley took over as CEO as I think he sort of sees the big picture. But Mary "the paycheck collector" Barra is absolutely toxic and will ruin GM.

Everything is still going according to the plan.

Covid has changed some things and given new lifelines to these sorry legacy automakers but the big picture remains the same. Tesla and the Chinese EV makers like BYD, Xpeng, and Nio will dominate the future automotive market.

How are Honda idiots? They've been very successful and build rock solid cars. Well, they are late to the EV party - Japan's push for Hydrogen backfired spectacularly.

Once you hit X number of dead cells, though, the Tesla goes into reduced performance mode and the range starts to drop to something more commonly seen on a 2012 era Nissan Leaf. Hoovie's Garage on YouTube did a nice set of videos on this.

I'll probably be done driving my Dino-Saur by 2035, so it won't effect me.
