There's nothing that I can do - I have to drive to work every day. I honestly would ride my bike as much as I could, but that is impossible as I have to wear slacks and dress shirts every day as I work in a professional business environment and I can't ride a bike in that.

What about wearing ordinary clothes while biking and then changing when you get to the office? Just arrive 15 minutes earlier to get changed and maybe wash up a bit (especially in summer). If you feel too embarrassed to change in the office washroom, how about changing at a nearby McDonalds or supermarket or whatever? You can buy a small drink or pack of gum to compensate them

The crx hf (which was a 4 cyl, btw) was getting over 55mpg in '84, 24 years ago and they can't even match it with hybrids.... I had a '88 Crx Dx for a few years got 45mpg and only cost $450.

now you see what kind of elistist jerks support obama.

anyways id rather be sitting in a prius in an accident than some old ass geo metro.
it maybe efficient, but what are its emissions. older cars standards were much lower. paying that much for that old a car is a bit ridiculous, and it'll just cost more as things are bound to wear out at that age.

Maybe. What if she didn't sell it?

But she probably could have sold it and gotten something like others suggested...do you really think she got $7300 for an Element which has been driving 51K+ miles per year?

Granted, it doesn't say what year the Element is. But if it's say 4 years old, that's over 200K miles.

I think her real best situation would be to find work closer or move closer to work. Or work from home if possible - maybe go to work 1 or 2 days a week.

Where are you getting this 51k+ per year? 100 miles/d x 5 days/wk = 500 miles minimum per week, let's round up to 600 miles/wk. 600 x 52 = 31,200

I used to have the same exact commute mileage wise, then I moved because my company relocated my office which had added another 50 miles to my commute. That's when I started looking for places to live that were closer to work. My commute now is 40 miles/d.

I'd love to have a 3cyl Geo Metro. I'd take an old broken down one. Take the engine out, set it in my lap, and rebuild it. I'd modify it for better gas mileage and performance using more modern parts.

If you read the article:

"With her 100-mile commute to and from work each day"

To me, that says 100 miles each way. But if it's only 100 miles per day, then it's an even worse decision as at that mileage it will take almost 7 years to reach any sort of return on her $7300 investment. Okay maybe more like 5 if you count the fact that prices will rise. But what about maintenance on that older car, etc.?

Point is that it wasn't a very wise purchase at all and is actually costing her more money at the moment.

You're right, that is how it is stated in the article. I took it to mean that it was combined mileage though. If she is indeed driving 200 miles per day she needs to rethink her job and where she is living IMO. I agree that she paid too much for the Metro.

Like many, she prefers one initial shock of payment in order to make all the following smaller shocks less shocking than they'd be otherwise.

Foolish mortals.

Also, I'll be shocked if she still has it in two years.

I did get a reckless endangerment ticket once in a Metro. I was going 87 in a 55. The cop was very suprised it would go that fast.

Anyway, GM needs to flood the market with cars based on it's 2.2L Ecotec engine. It's super efficient, clean, and cheap. If they did this instead of focusing on making their huge SUV's get 18mpg instead of 16, they'd be back on top again.

Speading that much on a car that old is stupid---they're probably spending more on the car than the extra gas is going to cost

I agree. I have a 2002 Saturn L100 with the 2.2 liter ecotec and it has gotten 33 mpg on the highway. I average about 31-32 on the highway, and it is a nice comfortable sedan.

Yes, let's wish for something that will cripple rural economies even more. After all, everyone who matters lives in a large city with easy mass transit options. Who cares about all those people in the flyover states where your food comes from. It'll be great for all your costs of goods too. I'm sure you'll love paying much more for groceries and anything else that's not manufactured locally.

Friggin' city people never bother to consider that anyone could ever live in places with real yards, away from the smog and the overcrowding. Mass Transit does not work in America outside of very few urban centers. We simply aren't concentrated enough.

One of my first cars was a white 1993 Geo Metro hatchback. My friend and I wrote "Fear The Egg" on the back of it in black shoe polish. Man, my mom was pissed when she tried to sell it a year later.

Are you guys un-American or something? Exxon is a US-based company. How do you expect them to clear $15 billion a quarter in profits if everyone gets cheap gas?

That would suck quite a bit, considering how America is a much more spread-out place than Europe. Many people have to commute 20-50 miles each day to their job, and higher gas prices makes that difficult. Along with making everything else more expensive. We definitely need more fuel sources (c'mon nuclear and wind!), but hoping for higher prices won't help anything.

You really don't have to hope for them. They're already here. Gas doesn't just affect how many people are driving SUVs or aren't carpooling...it increases costs of food and all goods...it basically screws the little guy everywhere.

And things have started to change...but the bigger is better mentality caused by cheap gas was going on for like 15+ years...expecting an instant change is unreasonable. The alternatives aren't there, thats why we have people buying up geo metros that are 12 years old! Car makers stopped making the products we need a long time ago.

In the United States a single engine was available from 1989 through 1994: a 1.0 L I3 engine. Rated at 55 hp (39 kW), the small Suzuki-designed engine was the most fuel efficient production engine used in a GM car to date, boasting over 49 mpg in models with manual transmissions, and up to 39 mpg with the 3 speed automatic. Manual transaxle cars were able to achieve a 0-60 time of just over ten seconds.

Wow, not bad for a car that was available 19 years ago. You would think we could have a car now with even better MPG and performance and remain inexpensive 20 years later.

A Civic VX or HX would have been a wiser car to get. It gets similar mileage as a metro, and is a bit roomier.

Trouble is, as mentioned, finding one that wasn't riced into oblivion and destroyed "racing" would be near impossible. And you'd likely pay as much as the article's fruitbat protagonist did for her geo metro if you could find one.

I'd imagine its no more dangerous then a motorcycle and you can drive it in the rain or pick up some groceries with it. Its all about perspective.
