I think they're mainly in the midwest this time, so that might be it.

They had a section in morning news about these beauties and they featured these people who would cook these ugly things. They fried then and boilen and stuff.
The guy who tried one said it tastes peanut-buttery.

Just send in the gourmets that eat fried bugs... They'll take care of the Cicadas.

Crap...we're in a cicada cycle this year? I hate going camping when the cicadas are out. It can be so loud at night that it's difficult to hold a conversation :|

Sounds like it's temperature dependent. It's possible that if it's warm enough at night, the cicadas would buzz away? Need more research.Originally posted by: shocksyde

They don't make noise at night... At least the ones that come up every 17 years in the mid-atlantic region. If I remember correctly, they stop around sundown and restart mid-morning.

You should get some praying mantis. Costco up here in Canada was selling them in boxes that contain 40-400 (yeah, such a huge discrepancy from box to box). They're fantastic insect killers... including mosquitos. And they're the coolest looking insects around.

Probably not quite, but the humidity makes up for it.Originally posted by: shocksyde

Well, I'm guessing it gets just as hot in MD during the summer as it does in the Midwest. I could be wrong though.

they only come out once every 7 to 10 years, so what you are witnessing is quite remarkable. Once they shed their shell they are actually quite cool lookinClick here for pic

Wow, I've never seen them for sale before. I wanna buy a box and hold "Praying Mantis Showdown 2007: The Fight for Justice" in my living room.
