1981.
I feel like that is both not that long ago, and at the same time a long time ago.
1981.
I flipped the meaning. I meant to say the opposite that committing a hate crime is more harmful than faking it.
I bring it up based on my feelings from the OJ trial. Watching the groups of people who got upset at his not guilty verdict screaming about the criminal justice system. People like me have been bitching about that for years yet it took OJ for white people to get hip to that.Interesting that you bring up OJ and Jussie. Justice is more a function of wealth than race. If you can afford a good lawyer, you can literally get away with murder, independent of race.

That’s fair, but I can also objectively look at the parade of tweets from Jussie’s cast mates, and even his studio, Tweeting total exoneration and vindication...not unlike how Trump supporters reacted to the Barr report.I bring it up based on my feelings from the OJ trial. Every now and then a black person of means can take advantage of the system. When that happens we feel like it is some kind of win. Even I know OJ and Jussie were both likely guilty.
There is a pecking order in the CJS. Being poor and a person of color is at the very bottom.
That why my /s posts with obvious references to Trump. Their MO's were eerily similar. If Trump can get away with it I don't understand why people are so upset with Jussie? Or maybe I know why.
I think Popehat sums up things pretty well:
Chicago PD set up a literal torture house and the real thing people are mad about is some idiot actor got off easy?
Smollett did tremendous damage to hate crime victims everywhere. He got off here literally with what amounts to a $10,000 fine (he's a multi-millionaire) and 2 days of community service. Which sends a terrible message. I also think there is a strong possibility of undue influence on the DA here. Smollett was connected like so many people of wealth and privilege.
So far as other problems with the CPD, I think we can be concerned about those as well.
Who knows. It's Illinois.Smollett did tremendous damage to hate crime victims everywhere. Yes their station in life is different but how they spin lies is almost identical. I would almost expect his cast mates to react that way. It would like expecting Ivanka to diss Daddy Trump over something stupid he said. That’s fair, but I can also objectively look at the parade of tweets from Jussie’s cast mates, and even his studio, Tweeting total exoneration and vindication...not unlike how Trump supporters reacted to the Barr report.
Now comparing Trump to Jussie is absurd relative to their crimes and station in life, but the analogy is similar in the sense that social media allows narratives to gain momentum completely divorced from facts.
The desire for harsh justice does nothing or at least very little in terms of helping people and society. You need punishment, but, nothing in terms of rehabilitation.
I'm surprised you don't agree.
The harm done when actually committing a hate crime is not as bad as faking a hate crime.

His point, which I agree with, is that people generally aren't.
Again, this isn't about agreeing with Smollett's sentence, it's recognizing that it's probably not even the 20th most outrageous thing that's happened in the criminal justice system in Chicago recently but nobody cared.
And in a "right back atcha" move, the police released the entire investigation report.
From what I heard on the radio some of it had already been available online and this is either all of it or additional material. CNN said that as soon as the reports were issued, the police were served with a court order prohibiting them from releasing anything else. Oops.
"Two Chicago Police supplemental reports on the Jussie Smollett case have been released. We're going through them now, and will post highlights here." (CNN)
I think it has its own significance in that it has provided the right, with its penchant for minimizing racism, to argue that all other hate crimes are fake.
Also galling is the fact the Smollett continues to lie and deny his guilt, and that he walks because of wealth and privilege. He damaged real hate crimes victims and he got off with nothing. He didn't even have to apologize.
As a liberal, this case offends me on multiple levels.
If you have been reading your thread, it should be pretty clear that many on the Left are upset about this as well. Do you care about the incident, or only Trump?
I think it has its own significance in that it has provided the right, with its penchant for minimizing racism, to argue that all other hate crimes are fake.
I pointed out in an earlier post that DA Foxx, who may be corrupt here, replaced DA Alvarez, who sat on and concealed the shooting of a black man by a police officer who was later convicted of murder for the incident. There is a pattern of corruption in Chicago politics. It's a wonder that Obama seems to have steered clear of it.
This case can be seen as another in a pattern of incidents involving political corruption and/or police racism in Chicago. But as I said earlier, the case also has its own significance as part of a national political dynamic, and it's not a good one.

Editing an existing post is hardly an attempt to be dishonest if the issue is that you mangled your own words and intent.I use it all the time to cover up my dreadful ineptitude with the use of apostrophes and my habit of mangling sentence structure. But there's a certain honesty about leaving things alone and posting a separate clarification if needed.
People who want Jussie to get 10 years in prison are angry because he had the nerve to name MAGA people.
You really believe their alleged crimes are of similar magnitude? You speak of hypocrisy of Trump defenders, how bout yourself? Do you feel both Trump and Jussie should be tried in the courts?
I do.
You really believe their alleged crimes are of similar magnitude?
I mean, really?
