The lack of inventory is amazing

Yesterday about mid-afternoon I stopped by the BMW dealership that I have been doing business with since 2004. The service department wasn't busy at all compared to a Monday or Friday but there were plenty of window shoppers in their sales lot. Only problem was slightly more than half of the parking spaces for new vehicles was empty. They have one main lot directly in front and another off to the left. The one to the left was a barren wasteland of empty spaces and the front section was about two-thirds occupied. Even before I got there I passed a Ford dealership across the street and it looked like it was going out of business with the lack of inventory. Maybe three vehicles between the front line of their property and their main building. And what inventory this BMW dealership seemed to have was more on the pricey side as deal-worthy inventory was all gone.

Something tells me this ain't recovering this year.

I know why it is happening--not that ignorant. I was just amazed to see it like that. First the pandemic made inventory high because lack of buyers and now the buyers are coming back out and the chip consortium, a race of super sentient silicon lifeforms, decided tthis would be great timing to halt all breeding.

Looks like Toyota was one of the very few that planned ahead.

TOKYO — Toyota reported Wednesday its profit more than doubled in January-March from a year earlier to 777 billion yen ($7 billion), as the Japanese automaker’s sales recovered from the pandemic.

Toyota Motor Corp.'s profit back in January-March 2020 was 327 billion yen. Quarterly sales rose 11% on year to nearly 7.7 trillion yen ($71 billion) from 6.9 trillion yen a year earlier, the company said.

Toyota's profit for this period is really no different than the rest of the auto industry, despite what Toyota is bleating.

And, btw.....Toyota is indeed cutting production down a bit. Why? Chip shortage. And from the info I've been seeing, it's rarely been the "major" chips that are short, but chips powering/controlling accessory functions.

Went to my local Toyota dealer for a scheduled oil change yesterday and spoke to a sales rep as I waited. The lot is 90% vacant, they have less than 40 used cars, only about 2 dozen new cars and they are all the stripped down entry level models. He said all the sales managers now drive the crappy used cars instead of the newer demo models .

My local Toyota dealership has maybe 2 new cars on the lot.....then they have maybe 200 used vehicles from numerous other brands. None of the other dealerships are that bad.

I went looking for something used the other day. Had more selections in used than new. Contemplating a Kia K5 or Stinger or Honda Accord. Anybody done Carvana?
