I remember the controversy this movie caused when it came out.

According to Roger Ebert, it is a pretty good movie, and should not be offensive to anyone.

I am Catholic, is it ok if I watch it?

I watched it and while it's not a classic, it's a pretty good film. It makes Jesus into a real character instead of a perfect being.

But seriously, it's just a movie. I wouldn't depend on it for anything more than entertainment value, and since I haven't seen it I couldn't say if it even provides that. It does not sound like it would be a Faith-inpiring endeavor though.

I wasn't real clear with my &quot;real character&quot; bit, what I really meant was that it makes him into a flawed imperfect being. More human than the bible or traditional religious lore would have us believe.

It's a very entertaining movie. It's not meant to be a faith inspiring event.

It's kind of like a &quot;What if&quot; type of movie. The beggining shows Jesus on the Cross with Satan promising him life if he denounces his Father and then the rest of the movie is about how Jesus's life would be if he did denounce his father. In the end it shows how wicked the world was because he denounced his father. Any more would give the whole plot away.

A lkot of the fundies messed in their shorts regarding this movie yet theey refused to see it. The thing is, it's not an Anti Religious movie.
William Defoe is excellent as Jesus Christ and the acting is very good with a great story and Plot.

Homosexuality also plays a significant role among the characters. And based upon the opinions expressed in another recent thread, I'd have to say that this movie probably wouldn't be your average Anandtecher's cup of tea.

I never saw the movie (yet), but I had the soundtrack. Peter Gabriel - Passion. Excellent album, all instrumental. Basically, he took various Middle Eastern styles and meshed them together into a very atmospheric sound. I used to listen to it when going to bed at night.

What I never understood about the whole uproar involving that movie was, Jesus was supposed to be half human, or so I was taught. So what is the big deal about showing the human side of him? If you are human, then you have all those needs and desires, why should he have been any different? If anything, you think it would have made people feel better, knowing he loved them enough to say no. So I don't see anything wrong with watching that movie. But, I am Catholic and I watched Dogma and enjoyed parts of it, so I guess I am doomed already.

Straying fromt the movie topic here, but it has been my understanding and teaching that Jesus is fully human, and fully God. His time on earth was spent as one perfect human, otherwise he could not have been used in the sacrifice. But that'a a whole 'nuther topic eh?

What Yo_ma_ma said about the nature of Christ is correct. Jesus was fully human and fully divine, therefore the perfect sacrifice.

I never saw the movie so I can't really say much about it except that don't take is as gospel truth because it is, after all, just a movie

Girlfriday: was Dogma any good? I've been curious to see it. I heard this rumor that a lot of Christians were p.o.ed at this movie and made a bug fuss about it but not one peep was made about The movie &quot;Stigmata&quot; which apparently had more 'blasphemy' in it than the other movie.
I haven't seen either so I was just mildly curious.

I thought Dogma was pretty lousy.
It seemed like they were just trying to do things for shock value, but in the end, failed at making a movie with much value.

I don't remember it portraying Jesus as a Bone Smoker. Maybe one of his Disciples might have been light in the sandals.In the movie didn't Jesus marry the whore Mary Magdelena and have a couple of little saviors running around? It's been a while since I've seen it so I could be wrong.

The plot sounds interesting. I will rent it and see what it is about.

I enjoyed Dogma. Some parts were stupid, but I found it pretty funny overall.

These are just movies. People should realize that they are made for entertainment, not enlightenment.

Last Temptation of Christ was an interesting movie. I wouldn't say it's a great movie, though, because I didn't buy into the interjection of Western values into the story. It did accomplish in showing Jesus as a human, with human drives and limitations. What it failed in was trying to converge two different cultures into one, while making history take a backseat to accessibility.
