I think population wise England is the big winner so far. 60+million people and 29 medals.

USA vs China are tied for medals with 54-55, but China has 5 times your population.

Canada has 10 medals, but if we had 10x the population (like USA) we'd have 100 medals

If Britain had 320 million people they might have 150 medals

You Yankees better pick up the pace, this is getting embarrassing.
GBR has the most athletes competing in the Olympics, on their home turf. If that's not abject failure, I don't know what is.

54 =! 53, USA USA USA@@!!!!

Canada, you just fail. You should petition for moose tipping to be an Olympic event, that way you guys can get another medal.

Not really, their medals are mostly badminton, table tennis, trampoline, etc... Those don't count.

Take away Phelps and China would be in the lead SSSnail, kinda weird that one athlete has that much influence on a countries status.

I am cheering for AMERICA!!

Watch it though, last time we Canadians chanted "USA USA USA".. we were marching South in the summer of 1812.

J/k.
Have the Canadians ever accomplished anything by themselves or is it always on the coattail of other nations? Psst, I'll let you in on a secret, you don't need to worship the Queen of England anymore, you're free.

Srsly, you guys couldn't even fight off Green Peace if you have to.

Well, if you take away badminton and table tennis and trampoline, China would have about half the gold medals. What's your point? I even question some of the gold medals they got from diving, but I'll let that slide.

If not Phelps, others will come forward, that's how we roll. But, I do agree, we need to invest our efforts to other easy peasy sports too, so that we can get all the medals.

GB has home field advantage which is a HUGE advantage. This has always been the case for the country host.

Remember Athens and how well little Greece did? But how have they fared afterwards?

Lets wait until the next Olympics to see how GB fares.....

.....Until then.....those Moose humpers up North better get their fucking act together!

Interesting parallel. As Canada's National Hero, D-list celeb Pam Anderson's looks has eroded, so has the Kanook's fortunes.

Maybe in the next Olympics, there can be a Moose Dressage so Canada can add another Gold to their EPIC trampoline all-universe dominance.

We could actually afford to sponsor the Olympics

Don't have to take out a Chinese loan or anything. I wonder when America will have home field advantage again...

And btw, Moose are Majestic, good eating and sexy as hell.

edit: another thing... Pam Anderson lives in America for the last 20 years. She started as a radiant hottie but her looks have gone downhill over the last decade. Recently she has dropped right off the charts as an attractive women, especially if you see her without the make up she so desperately tries to maintain.

What a perfect metaphor for America's loss of status, power, and freedom.

Now America is a kept women.

Perfect metaphor.

Unfortunately, the Britts haven't found a way to swim to gold, yet.

If John Wayne was riding a Moose.. he would have been an INTERNATIONAL star instead of a local yocal. I mean, anyone riding a moose would be impressive. Not as much as riding an elephant but much better then riding a camel. Horses are upgraded mules, truth be told.

John Wayne IS an international star, where have you been? Oh, I'm sorry, Canada, right? Explains a lot... D:

My point is that Phelps, a single individual, in a certain sport, regardless of distance, delivers whether you like or dislike him. China seems to be doing well across different "sports" regardless how you and I view them as "worthy."

The Olympic "Games" was originally conceived to showcase the best that each country has to offer in said sport. USA is dominating the "big" sports which require "big" facilities, while other countries, China included, are doing well in the "little" sports, such as “badminton and table tennis and trampoline," which do not require a large budget to practice. Look at the women's running events.

The “less” developed countries who in turn have less of a budget to spend on training have athletes doing quite well I must say SSSnail, something that should not be dismissed.

Maybe I’m mistaken, but even here in New York & Boston Marathons, aren’t we almost always handed our a**es? It doesn’t cost much to train for a marathon, zero facilities, just rigorous dedication and training. Just a thought.

When an American says "international" they usually mean " in all 52 states".
Here's proof that John Wayne is an international star - as reclusive as you are in Canyuckistan, you know who he is.

And, another thing, all your "stars" are NOBODY, until they made it in the US. Everyone knows this.

Damn, they should get owning people on message board an Olympic sport, Americans would get Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Just because John Wayne was your first President.. or was that Daniel Boone, I forget. But not everyone follows your politics as much as I do.

You're mistaken. Chinese athletes are STATE SPONSORED, they have the might of the Chinese government behind them.

US is doing well at other sports too, and mostly sports that requires a lot of physical efforts, skills, etc... and not backyard past time activities.

So, the guy is good at swimming, and it's a legitimate sport, what's wrong with that? Most of his winnings are 1/100th of a second, so obviously other countries can train their athletes to swim too.

They do cheat though. I like China and Chinese but they cheat like a mofo. They fake ages, they dope, they probably have a government sponsored sports branch dedicated to performance enhancing drugs and to cheating. Russians used to do the same thing when they were communists.

Sports is all about pretending these people aren't all doped up, including Phelps. The Elephant in the room.

Edit: omg, SSSnail and I are on the same page...I feel like a moose kicked me in the groin

Wanna know how to get around all those doping things? Create a new drug they don't test for, lots of athletes are probably using them. It has become part of the olympics, I don't feel china does it too much more than other countries

Also anyone notice the koreans kicking ass in many of the martial arts and military sports? O.O

Here's what I don't get: why does everyone keep referring to population size as if it matters.

Olympic victories are first and foremost about money. It doesn't matter how many people you have if you can't afford to train them. Conversely it doesn't matter how few people you have if you have enough money; you not only have a great training system, but you can afford to woo athletes from other countries over to your country.

A country has the best Olympic team that it can afford, regardless of their population size.

I believe this has to do with the aspect of natural talent. With a larger population, a nation has a larger pool to choose from. Thus there's the perceived notion that a larger population means more naturally talented athletes.

Gold medal = worth $800
Silver medal = $500
Bronze medal = $3 <--- LOL

Get your $ worth correct.....

How much are Olympic medals actually worth?

The gold medal consists of just over 1 percent actual gold. The rest is made up of 92.5 percent silver and 6.16 percent copper - and is only worth about $644.
The silver medal is a modification of the gold medal. The gold is replaced with more copper, making the medal worth around $330.
The bronze medal is made of 97 percent copper, 2.5 percent zinc and 0.5 percent tin - and is only worth about $4.70.
