Why can't you people just fucking enjoy the games for what they are. Saying that there are too many swimming events or too many table tennis/badminton etc. are just being stupid and petty. All the sports in the Olympics have been judged by the IOC to be worthy of the games. If THEY think it is OK, then it is OK. It is THEIR games to govern -- not some armchair blow-hard know-it-alls from a tech forum.

Just as a note - I brought up the swimming thing but don't have a problem with it at all. I only ever bring it up when someone says "X event gives out too many medals" or "Race walking shouldn't be in the Olympics".

My issue with the different swim things is that it introduces stupid controversies like "Lochte does an extra dophin kick and that's not allowed in this event".

Just line people up at one end of the pool and let them go, the first person out of the water after the appropriate number of laps wins. End of discussion.

I'm a caveman when it comes to athletic events though. Distance running is my background and it doesn't get much more basic than. You start and you end, how you do it between those points is up to you.

If you have the land, it's really not that hard (expensive) to build a baseball stadium.

It's pretty expensive if you're only going to use it for two weeks.

Yeah, thats pretty stupid. Soccer and water polo arent the most popular sports in the US, but I'm fairly confident soccer has a slightly larger following than water polo. Hopefully they will switch over to soccer after this water polo match is done because I would like to see it as well.

My complaint is that the Olympics are meant to be a celebration of individual accomplishment and the amazingness of the human body.

Team sports do nothing to highlight that. Large team sports are all about the most popular players doing things that aren't really all that athletic (though they may look somewhat spectacular.)

I'd like to see the Olympics be about the human. That's one reason I like the track&field so much. Things like the decathlon really highlight how amazing a human can be. Basketball/water polo/soccer/indoor volleyball really don't.

womens soccer is infinitely more popular than womens water polo hence the reason they're showing water polo and going to show you soccer later. so they can rake in more money and be assholes by cutting it to shreds with editing. seriously i get amped EVERY OLYMPICS for womens soccer for the last 4 olympics and this time around it's been damn near impossible for me to catch a fucking match. I am boycotting NBC for their presentation of these Olympic games and I won't be watching their programming until they issue an apology to the United States of America and the rest of the worlds population who was subject to their atrocious coverage of such an amazing international event.
