atleast there isn't much they could have done to fuck up the next part.

I'd give Boyo's show a 6/10, mostly for the earlier segments. The transition to the industrial was nice. After that it turned hit-and-miss and then essentially died with the last act (aside from Berners-Lee). I'm sorry, a cheap romance celebrating facebook statuses and house parties... I was almost expecting dubstep to be honored.

I get that they were trying to show off their contributions to the internet, and social media is probably the part the most people can relate to but... well first off they didn't invent social media. That largely took off with myspace and facebook here in the states. If they wanted to show off their contribution to the internet they should have shown something of more general importance happening, show a transition in communications over the course of the 90s.

It's like wanting to show off the very tip of the pyramid when you built the foundation. Just show off the foundation that allowed the tip to exist in the first place and be glad of it.

loving the outfits, you've got the georgians where it looks like the females just started in a film as hospital nurses making sure you got the happy ended followed by the germans who must have suffered a pastel explosion at the easter egg factory.

China's had a lot more nationalism and showmanship. It was designed to show off China to the world (especially considering it was their first time hosting), and was tailored for mass consumption. The UK show is incorporating a lot of stuff most non-Brits wouldn't understand.

To be fair I missed some of the beginning. It's replaying right now and I am taping it. Ill watch the rest later.

well the beginning was supremely boring. I was about to stab myself in the face. picking up during the industrial revolution though - digging this Underworld soundtrack.

is the whistling significant at all or is that just some riff they came up with?

Seems like we were all pretty pleased with it over here. Danny Boyle is awesome and did a great job, I'm not sure how it translated across the sea as you guys probably wouldn't get some of the "Englishness / Britishness" of it all.

Yeah, that's probably it. It's not that any of it was "bad" at least in terms of performance quality, just a lot of stuff I didn't get the significance of. The facebook status/house party thing just seemed really... trivial. The accompanying romance seemed pointless. Trivial and pointless are not words that should be associated with the Olympics.

True, but they embody what the average 18 - 25 year old does in the UK every week, so it's quite important. It's very representative of what the UK is like right now.

What does Facebook/Twitter/social media and average 18-25 yr olds frolicking them in every developed country has to do UK?

You think social media is representative of UK? You should see Korea and Japan.

So.. you're saying that the current culture in your country is rather trivial?

I agree that some parts were good, but some parts were just downright embarrassing/amateurish when on the global stage.

it was always a joy to watch the olympics and the opening ceremonies back in the 80s and 90s. it had a real sense of peace back then. now it seems so commercialized and fake. when they talk about peace it sounds like a lie. i guess after 9/11 and all the fighting going on now, it all just seems so......futile.
