Did you watch the Rumsfeld peice on Frontline? Is Shinseki "blowing it out of proportion"? When we invade SK do you think it's gonna be a cakewalk like Iraq?

WTF is SK? South Korea? Last I checked, they are our allies. Maybe you know something I don't, why would we invade them?

What specifically allows the President of the US to do this? Where do people get the idea that the President can do this? It's fear mongering, and it's not possible, that's how I can state unequivocally that Bush won't do it.

signed papers and took money to be called up if the country was at risk and at real war.... not some war that was started without just cause

all bush will say now that he knows he was wrong to begin with was "saddam was a terrible person and needed to be removed from power" - this however isnt the issue, the real issue is that he f'd up and now is trying to dodge the political bullets

why exactly would you pray that the "war on terror" (made up since the war should be wherever usama is) would continue. we are at very little risk right now but fox news and other republican fed news stations keep telling us we are at a higher risk than we were the day before.... at this pace we will be killing ourselves in 2 weeks because everyone will be considered a terrorist

All signs are POINTING TO A DRAFT. There is already this "backdoor draft" (no pun intended) happening. Troops are forced to stay longer than they want, reserves are being called up, and the total active number of personnel is nowhere near the numbered required to sustain the war in Iraq/Afghanistan, let alone Iran, Syria, and North Korea.

And for those of you who say Bush isn't going to reinstate the draft, he said so himself! will have to pull your head out of your ass for a minute and look back in the 60s when Lyndon Johnson was running for president. He repeatedly said that he wouldn't be sending Americans to Vietnam during elections. Yet after he got in office, a draft was instated and those draftees got sent to Vietnam.

This isn't to say Bush is going to reinstate the draft.. its just something to be wary of.

So, when we invade (and then have to occupy) other countries, where are the troops gonna come from exactly?

The armed forces silly. We have more kids joining up now than ever. They want to give back and do something for their country and make something of themselves instead of sitting on their butt.

wrong, we have less joining up now than just after sept. 11th and even more people than ever wanting to leave the armed services because of the position that they have been put in (aka reservists and national guard units being called to active duty)

my county's national guard unit was just activated to be sent over in 3 months, first time it has been done since WWII

Again:

The Army Reserve's mission, under Title 10 of the U.S. code, is to provide trained and ready Soldiers and units with the critical combat service support and combat support capabilities necessary to support national strategy during peacetime, contingencies and war. The Army Reserve is a key element in The Army multi-component unit force, training with Active and National Guard units to ensure all three components work as a fully integrated team.

True but the reservists should have considered that before they signed up.

they did.. that's why they joined the reserves instead of active duty service.... had they wanted to go as a first line of defence they would have joined up with active duty not reserves.... reserves should only be called upon in a time of need when all other units are unavailable, not activated at will

Read the entire post before continuing with this you fvcking idiot. We've already discussed this and it's been put to rest. The so called "backdoor draft" is nothing new. Involuntary extensions of ETS's has been around for a long, long time.

The President of the US does not have the power to reinstate the draft. Explain to me how the President can do what you're saying please. He doesn't have the power authorized to him to do so. He cannot decide one day to just reinstate the draft. Please see previous posts about watching Fraggle Rock and understanding how a bill becomes law.

You really need to read this entire post. You're wrong. The Reserves and Guard have fought in EVERY WAR THE US HAS EVER BEEN IN SINCE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR!

The President may not have the power to do so himself, but he certainly carries a lot of weight in the decision - especially in the power to VETO.

Jemcam - please respond to my post above......thanks.

Bush and Washington Times: BUSTED! Embedded reporters come in handy after all.
http://kstp.com/article/stories/S3723.html?cat=1
A 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS crew in Iraq shortly after the fall of Saddam Hussein was in the area where tons of explosives disappeared, and may have videotaped some of those weapons.

The missing explosives are now an issue in the presidential debate. Democratic candidate John Kerry is accusing President Bush of not securing the site they allegedly disappeared from. President Bush says no one knows if the ammunition was taken before or after the fall of Baghdad on April 9, 2003 when coalition troops moved in to the area.

Using GPS technology and talking with members of the 101st Airborne Division, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has determined the crew embedded with the troops may have been on the southern edge of the Al Qaqaa installation, where the ammunition disappeared. The news crew was based just south of Al Qaqaa, and drove two or three miles north of there with soldiers on April 18, 2003.

During that trip, members of the 101st Airborne Division showed the 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS news crew bunker after bunker of material labelled "explosives." Usually it took just the snap of a bolt cutter to get into the bunkers and see the material identified by the 101st as detonation cords.

"We can stick it in those and make some good bombs." a soldier told our crew.

Soldiers who took a 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS crew into bunkers on April 18 said some of the boxes uncovered contained proximity fuses.
There were what appeared to be fuses for bombs. They also found bags of material men from the 101st couldn't identify, but box after box was clearly marked "explosive."

In one bunker, there were boxes marked with the name "Al Qaqaa", the munitions plant where tons of explosives allegedly went missing.

Once the doors to the bunkers were opened, they weren't secured. They were left open when the 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS crew and the military went back to their base.

"We weren't quite sure what were looking at, but we saw so much of it and it didn't appear that this was being secured in any way," said photojournalist Joe Caffrey. "It was several miles away from where military people were staying in their tents".

Officers with the 101st Airborne told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the bunkers were within the U.S. military perimeter and protected. But Caffrey and former 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Reporter Dean Staley, who spent three months together in Iraq, said Iraqis were coming and going freely.

"At one point there was a group of Iraqis driving around in a pick-up truck,"Staley said. "Three or four guys we kept an eye on, worried they might come near us."

On Wednesday, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS e-mailed still images of the footage taken at the site to experts in Washington to see if the items captured on tape are the same kind of high explosives that went missing in Al Qaqaa. Those experts could not make that determination.

The footage is now in the hands of security experts to see if it is indeed the explosives in question.

Funny how you never responded to what I posted yesterday about an independent agency confirming that the Russians took them to Syria before the US arrived. Oh yes, you did. You said we should have secured them before we arrived, what was I thinking?

Well, I have responded. If they are on tape with embedded reporters, they weren't taken to Syria by any Russians. If you believed that tall tale from Washington times, you are a sucker.

No, I didn't see it, but it sounds like another "60 minutes exclusive" to me. Non-military advisers and people in the Executive branch MUST make decisions for the military before the military can complete their missions.

Google "Military Operations Orders". You'll see very plainly that in any operation, information is passed down through the ranks in order for a mission to be planned and executed.

Sorry, I can't offer my comments on the program. I have enough first hand military experience to know this is the way it's always been, based on what you told me.

Nice job diverting the subject from the draft to the missing explosives topic. *Golf clap*
