A couple of them came over to my house in India (yes they are everywhere!) They thought I would have never heard of them and started telling me about the church. When i asked them if they were from Utah they were quite taken aback.

They then asked if I was a Hindu and when I replied in the affirmative went on to say that I should consider following Jesus Christ. I politely declined and said I like Hinduism as it makes a distinction and works differently for different people rather than a set of rules on right and wrong. They didn't give up and said Jesus Christ works for everybody and when I said well that's what you guys think and you are entitled to your opinion they replied no we don't think we know so..

I just walked away after that.

Offer the Mormons inside and see if they'd like some coffee or a cup of tea. Then ask them if they've read any religious book outside of the Mormon cannon or the Bible, to which they'll respond "no" because they are discouraged from reading other religious texts. See if you can coax their "secret name" out of them which is something they receive at their super secret "Endowment Ceremony" but, in reality, the secret name is just based on what day of the week the ceremony is on. When a couple is married in the temple the woman is to reveal her secret name to the man. In the afterlife as the man is to become a god himself, he calls out her secret name to summon the woman from the ether so he can plow that ass and make countless spirit babies to populate his own planet. Since the missionaries are young they probably wouldn't know about "the Penalty" but up until 1990 members undergoing the "Endowment Ceremony" also had to simulate slitting their own throat and disemboweling themselves as an oath that they would never divulge what they saw during the ceremony.

It's all obviously man made and patently HILARIOUS!

I'm LDS (Mormon) and I chose to serve as a missionary. I feel that I'm a pretty relaxed individual and am able to laugh at other's outward perception of my faith, but I find some of the content of this thread patently offensive.

We find your so-called religion to be a cult so we apologize your offended but between secret names, planets, multiple wives, handshakes, special underwear, the inability to make decisions on what you may drink, family night, and all the other "cult-like" behavior your so called religion exhibits how can we can we not assume its a cult.

They kicked your leaders ass out of KC due to his charlatan ways.

I hope you now realize what the rest of America thinks of your cult like religion.

well, that was only after being run out of NJ, PA, and IL. The "Promised Land," was always, you know, "that next town over there. Sorry guys, I keep forgetting!"

The promised land was only, uh, "discovered" until they fled outside of the US--then the Utah territory.

I would thank them for being an example of a believer. They are giving up two years to teach about the gospel because of what they believe.

And despite all the negative remarks that people are saying about them because of what they believe they turn the other cheek. Thumbs up for living your religion.

Did you join out of your free will, or were you born into it (ie your parents/family etc).

Just as a person does not choose to be born to a Catholic, Jewish, Born-Again, Islamic, Buddhist, Atheist, (insert theological group here, sorry if I left someone out) family, I did not choose to be born to my loving LDS family.

I choose to live my life in accordance to the teachings of Jesus Christ the best that I understand them, and I joined the LDS church because I choose to do so. If I didn't understand or agree with the current teachings of the church, I would not presently claim to be a member of the organization, nor would I continue to have my name on the records of the LDS church.

Simple as that.

how do you expect him to answer a question like that? your words suggests that if his parents are members of his church then he had no free will to join.

I joined the church on my own when I was 32. I went on Mormon.org, started a chat and the next day the missionaries came over. I live in SC which is nowhere near Utah. I had never met a Mormon until I met the missionaries.

Interesting. I have to say you're the first Morman I've ever heard of who wasn't born into it, and I know more than a few. Just curious, what made you convert, and why LDS?

I am not Mormon. I was born into another religion, educated myself about other religions and chose the religion I want to live in and raise my family in. I am a pretty relaxed individual. However, I find it highly offensive for someone who does not know me at all feels that they know so much better than me that they can come on my property, knock on my door and interrupt my day all just to tell me how stupid I am and how smart they are.

I have no problem with people believing the religion they want to believe. I have a big problem with people trying to convert me.

For the previous 3 years. I just knew I was going to be a Mormon. I don't know why. I even joked about it with my wife. One day I came home and I had just missed the missionaries. They were across the street. I should have flagged them down then but didn't and felt like complete crap for the next 24 hours. Like I just missed the one chance I had been given.

Fast forward to the next day and I went online trying to figure out how to get them to come back. I went online and they just started doing the chat with a missionary online. I jumped on and requested a visit. And that was that. Pretty freakin awesome and I've been great ever since.

The only things I struggle with is that my wife is not Mormon. She supports me an encouraged me to join but has no desire to join herself. I respect that but wonder how much better my marriage would be if we both belonged to the same church. All good though.

She goes to her church, my kid goes to her churches school and I'd even consider putting my kid in Catholic school. I'm not opposed to hearing other's beliefs because I once had other beliefs too and I like hearing them.

What religion were you before?

What specifically about the Mormon theology attracted you?

Having been a Mormon for (I assume) a number of years and having gone through the various ceremonies and rituals, do you believe you would have joined if you had known about all of it up front?

How do you reconcile your wife not being Mormon knowing that you will not get to be with her after death?

Were you ever approached during the vote on Prop 8 and told to contribute more than the standard 10% to support it?

I had a acquaintance who was Retired Army that I just to go shooting with occasionally. He had some great stories from his time in Vietnam. Anyway he was a hard core atheist. His dog tag for religion just said None. He kept a Satanic Bible by his door. When ever the Mormons or Jehovah Witnesses would come by and ask him if they could discuss scripture with him. He would nod and said hold on let me get my bible. As soon as they did see him getting the Satanic Bible they would kind of freak out and start backing away from his door. He would invite them in so they could all read scripture. At this point they would decline and rush away.

Non demoninational Christian and baptized as such.

It made more sense that God loved us enough that when all the apostles died, that he would not abandon us. That his true church would be restored and he would have a prophet on earth.

South Park was also a big factor and likely what started it all for me. They made fun of Mormons up until the part where they showed they were good hearted people with great strong families. I wanted that for myself.

Haven't been through the ceremonies at the temple. Yet.

It is what it is. The worse thing for me to do is push my religion on her and drive her away.

Were you ever approached during the vote on Prop 8 and told to contribute more than the standard 10% to support it?

That happened before I joined. They do not bring up money and I would venture a guess that that scenario never happened. They are not struggling more money so I would think they had money on hand.

If this is true, why are so many of the claims made by the church factually incorrect? For example, it is claimed the Native Americans are direct descendants of a tribe of Israelites that migrated to North America which has been shown false by many, many archaeologists.

In addition, how do you feel about the church continually receiving word from god to change its doctrines? Joseph Smith taught that polygamy was necessary for reception into the Celestial Kingdom (many wives were needed to successfully seed a planet with billions of spirit baby offspring) yet when the United States government applied pressure suddenly god changed his mind. The same is true of the church's stance that blacks carried the curse of Cain (originally it was the Lamanites but later changed with John Taylor) and were tainted with dark skin as punishment.

Despite these clear contradictions, factually incorrect teachings, and odd propensity for god to change his mind due to societal and political pressure, why do you feel the Mormon church is the "true, restored church?"

Was there a reason you felt that being goodhearted and having a strong family required a conversion to the Mormon church and could not be achieved without it?

there is more to that doctrine, it isn't necessarily that simple , as the way you put it

I suppose he could have his wife posthumously sealed to him by proxy after she dies or he could try to convince her to convert to Mormonism and be sealed to him in the spirit world before the resurrection but if she doesn't convert they cannot be together forever.

Wait, someone mentioned magic underpants earlier.

I need specifics, a religion with your own magic underpants might change my way of thinking about the universe.
