Nope.

Rules regarding etiquette during a rendition of the national
anthem come from the national code; not pulled from your ass.

TITLE 36--PATRIOTIC AND NATIONAL OBSERVANCES, CEREMONIES, AND
ORGANIZATIONS

Subtitle I--Patriotic and National Observances and Ceremonies

Part A--Observances and Ceremonies

CHAPTER 3--NATIONAL ANTHEM, MOTTO, FLORAL EMBLEM \1\ MARCH, AND TREE

Sec. 301. National anthem

(a) Designation.--The composition consisting of the words and music
known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.
(b) Conduct During Playing.--During a rendition of the national
anthem--
(1) when the flag is displayed--
(A) all present except those in uniform should stand at
attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart;
(B) men not in uniform should remove their headdress with
their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder,
the hand being over the heart; and
(C) individuals in uniform should give the military salute
at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until
the last note; and

(2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face
toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag
were displayed.

(Pub. L. 105-225, Aug. 12, 1998, 112 Stat. 1263.)

Laws of observance and etiquette, while similar, are not necessarily one and the same. Those are the minimum laws of observance for the national anthem.

The whole history behind women not taking their hats off at all is explained above, largely based on the history of women's headdresses. Anything like a baseball cap, or something unisex, should be removed in the same situations regardless of gender. While not a law, it is proper etiquette.

Once again, what you're quoting is the US Code, which contains laws regarding various subject matters. It is the bare minimum regarding the observance of the National Anthem.

Perhaps you should bone up on forum etiquette as well as hat etiquette. It might save you some embarrassment in the future.

if you think the performance is the reason the National Anthem is important, you missed the point.

Suck or not, the person getting out there and doing this is showing a lot of what everyone should be.

Oh and a link that states something from 1922? Well at least it was updated with facts from 1963.

Here. Is this better?
U.S Code as of 2006.

And anyone who reached out to forcibly remove any article of my clothing could look forward to drawing back a bloody stump.

wow I never knew there was a written law/code about this, odd...

There's also US "law" on how to hang and treat the US flag but none of it is enforceable, and if put to the test would actually be found unconstitutional

They are "guidelines", the 1st ammendment protects your right to completely ignore the above codes, if you decided to do such a thing.

It's such a bad song... They really should have used America the Beautiful. "Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?" This sentence is meaningless. I consider myself patriotic but I don't get caught up in flags and anthems. Like George Carlin said, I consider those symbols, and I leave symbols to the symbol-minded.

I will clap politely... I generally don't boo.

Fun facts about our national anthem:
1. It's written in response to the attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. Key, the guy who wrote it, did so after he was taken prisoner by the British.
2. It's set to a then-popular British drinking song.

Anyway, to take the first two lines, smash them together and declare that it doesn't make sense is disingenuous. Here's the first stanza:

Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
Over the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Translation:

Crap, we're on a British warship that's bombing the shit out of Fort McHenry. It's dark. I can't see shit except some explosions from British shells. Every once in a while the explosions illuminate that tiny little flag flying over the fort. Man, this battle has gone on a long time, I wonder who won battle? [queue dawn] Oh, what's that? A huge motherfucking American flag?! HOLY SHIT! The British didn't capture the FORT! AMERICA, FUCK YEAH. We rock.

You don't exactly need a PhD to figure this stuff out.

edit: just to make it clear, I think America, the Beautiful should be our national anthem.

Note: You're not supposed to clap for the singing of the National Anthem. It's a hymn, and historically hymns never receive applause or acknowledgment after they are sung / played.

History, shmistory. If I see someone not clapping after the national anthem, I assume they're a terrorist.

I'm not as patriotic as some people but I love the national anthem. It wouldn't matter how anyone would sing it unless they were fudging it on purpose (read Rosanne Barr).

Yup as long as they are doing it respectfully, i will clap/cheer.

Last time I heard it at a ball game, I had to tell my girlfriend to take her hat off. Then I had to take her hat off for her (of course we had to fight about this after :roll. It seems too many people these days can't be bothered to show respect for 2 minutes by standing up, taking off their hat, and shutting the fuck up.

this is a big pet-peeve of mine, i always yell at people who don't stand up or keep their hat on.
and I am proud to say that my girlfriend will also remove her hat in respect to the country and flag.
