"The argument for secession is that the U.S. has become an empire that is essentially ungovernable ? it's too big, it's too corrupt and it no longer serves the needs of its citizens," said Rob Williams, editor of Vermont Commons, a quarterly newspaper dedicated to secession.

Understandable considering the direction this country is going. But I still think secession is the incorrect path. We should stick together and keep the USA whole. The people need to get more concerned about what effects them. Stop voting based on what people in the entertainment industry say including Limbaugh and Hollywood. THINK PEOPLE!

(though I wouldn't be totally heartbroken if certain southern states chose to depart. )

Vermont secession movement gains traction

The problem isn't that everyone in the United States doesn't think alike, it's that we're under the impression that democracy means we take a popular vote on EVERYTHING, and then make everyone abide by it. Texas and New Hampshire don't have a whole lot in common, so why in the world should their laws have to agree? That was the whole idea of states' rights, and it's largely an idea we've forgotten.

I think the North should just take its good, high wage jobs, high tech, etc and stop subsidizing the poor Southern states. They are sucking our tax dollars. Without them we could have universal health care AND free college education for all us Northerners.

The entire concept is absurd in todays thinking. Regardless of what "color" your state is the fact remains that the North needs the South and vice versa.

I think he was just pointing out that the northeast and west coast states pay out far far more in federal taxes then they get back.

Strangely enough the red states that fight so fiercely for lower taxes are the greatest recipients of federal tax money compared to what they pay out.

Sounds like a good argument as to why the rich should stop subsidizing the poor and working class with their disproportionate share of the tax burden

So we down here get to keep our Oil & Gas industry along with other energy entities, right? I bet you complain about high prices now. You are dumber than a box of rocks.

Ouch, assuming he was not being sarcastic since techs normally posts as a liberal/democrat and you know they are all about looking out for the poor.

BTW, Alabama BBQ is better than Texas BBQ.

wtf??? Despite your Oil and Gas industry you still suck huge amounts of money from the North. Guess you're not getting your royalty checks from the oil companies. Or could it be the oil and gas companies have such low royalty rates? Or possibly despite your oil and gas money the rest of the south is so hard up you still need a virtual pipeline of money from the North to keep your states going. And you will need to sell your oil and gas at market rates. So it won't change our price one bit.

btw I love Southern people. Its just their politics that are screwy.

And why do BBQ and Ted Kennedy have to be mutually exclusive. If you get my meaning.

Might want to read this:

http://www.taxfoundation.org/files/sr139.pdf

I like this part in particular:

Thanks to a steeply progressive federal income tax, states with higher incomes pay vastly higher federal taxes, payments that are unlikely ever to be matched by federal spending directed to those states. Ironically, most of these high-paying states are the so-called blue states that have generally elected politicians who support a more steeply progressive tax system even though their own constituents bear a greater share of the burden as the code gets more progressive.

So the reality is, the "red states that want lower taxes" are trying to help the situation. The blue states are just making it worse.

Actually, here in LA the Feds have been screwing us out of our royalty revenue for decades. Give us what most other states get by way of revenue from oil and gas exploration off their coasts and we can rebuild our own coast and fix our own levees that the Feds screwed up once already.

Yeah, that supports what I wrote? People who vote for progressive taxation don't want to "help the situation", the redistribution of wealth is its fundamental tenent.

It doesn't happen often, but I fully agree with Rainsford. The federal government has it's place, but it's far beyond the original intentions. I don't have a count of federal laws, but I wouldn't be surprised if we all live under more federal laws than we do state laws. That's sad.

Yea thats a good argument.

I think a lot of people in the Northeast are beginning to support this notion. I'd like to see how America gets along without the Northeast and Cali. There would be no tourism at all. No one comes to America to see some field in Minnesota.

Only 13% of the population support the idea of secession. So don't worry, it's not gonna happen

Right, tourism is the primary determinant of success. Sounds like you've got a great grasp on economics.

How are you going to have tourism in the Northeast when everyone is dying of starvation, you do realize that the majority of Americas farmland is NOT in the Northeast right? The elitist attitude of the Northeasterners and Californians here is sickening. I've lived in the NE for the past 20 years btw.

Bwuhahahaha  You ever heard of Disney World? Or Florida? Or North Carolina (Smoky Moutain/Blue Ridge national parks - the most vistited national park in the USA)?

Ever heard of the beaches along the SE coast, or the Gulf coast?

No tourism in the SE? Man that's funny.

I think there's more "high tech" in the SE and Cali, than in the NE. I'm referring to the Research Triangle around Charlotte NC, and Silicon Valley.

Otherwise, I see no problem with splitting up. Perhaps keep an agreement on the establishment of a (North American) military and the NA/federal interstate system.
