Tried the third Apple store in my city today. Went through another three of the 64GB white Verizon model. All three had this defect AND at least two dead / stuck pixels.

Where the hell is Apple's quality control?
Awesome post, seriously.

Wow man. You are seriously in for investigation aren't ya. ^_^ You must have spent $300~ $400 worth gas so far....... and THAT is what I'm trying to get at. It's not worth making all these trips hoping for a defect-free display.

To answer your question about where is the Apple's QC, there isn't. These are *mass produced*. Apple knows there will be a lot of demand. So they don't have time nor have the money to go through all QC processes..... unless Apple jacks up the iPad price by quadruple. Seriously, if they can produce perfect displays (whitest whites perfectly even across the screen with zero backlight bleeds and no tint and no other artifacts) I would be glad to pay all that money, EVEN IF IT DOES NOT GIVE ME THE FEATURES I WANT... just for the heck of it. I want to have something made with finest quality. We are talking some serious dope. The price has to go up.... I mean it. $500 is a joke. Are you kiddin me?? GET DA HELL OUTTA HERE..... It's made for average joe mom and pops. It's not for end users.

The gas it takes to get to the store isn't a concern. My work is a five minute walk to the store anyway.

I don't care too much about the red tint or a single dead or stuck pixel. I do care about the light leakage. That's a pretty glaring defect.

^ Kind of agree. I *can* live with one dead pixel with perfectly lit white screen with no light bleeds. But I can't deal with light leaks. Those flashlights really annoy the heck out of me....

As for tint, if it's perfectly even tint, not too bad. But "uneven tint"? nooooooooooo I can't take that either.

Great work Lou on your investigation! Keep up the good work and you're shoe in for a promotion!

Things I am wondering about the new iPad:

1. is 16 gb too small? I hear Retina apps take up more space than usual

2. How awesome do digital camera photos look on this thing?

3. any scaling issues?

1. Depends if you have iTunes match or not and how many music/movies you plan on having. If you have match, I say 16gb is sufficient. If not, you'll want 32.

It is not a hyperbole when I say that photos look amazing if they are high res. I'm a photographer and I was giddy like a little kid the other day looking through my portfolio on the retina display.

don't plan on keeping any music on it. Would use it almost like a laptop.

I figure it's the best way to view modern DSLR content.

But isn't a typical DSLR image like 2-3 megabytes?

I web-optimize my images to about 2500px wide at 72dpi so they can shrink to about 1mb each. No need to load up print quality images if you're just viewing them on a screen.

I am pretty happy with my new iPad. I haven't really noticed the retina display at first. The biggest impact was when I got back to the iPad 2 or my MBA display. It makes you wonder how you could go on before with such blurry vision. The retina works best on text tho, it's little bit harder to see the difference with photos, specially when iTunes always scale down the pictures synched to the device.

As for the camera itself, it is a vast improvement from the iPad2's, but it's no DSLR territory. The videos recorded are however quite good, probably better than what I get out of my little P&S. I like the convenience of the iPad... you can shoot, edit and publish from one single platform.

Here's a movie I made this afternoon. I spent maybe 30 minutes filming, and 30 minutes editing it in iMovie and MovieLooks. However, exporting the movie from the iPad at 720p took close to one hour to do so. But I think the export time can be more bearable with short clips under 2 minutes. Quality is decent (youtube destroys it tho).

EDIT:added video link to vimeo for better quality.

I'm a die-hard Galaxy Tab Android user....who's a flashaholic with roms on the Android. And let me tell you, the last two days I have not missed Android. Yes I am peeved until a jailbreak comes out, but Apple has it right this time!

How do I do the light bleed test and color tests you guys are doing?

Thanks in advance

All we have been doing for the light bleed is get a black wallpaper and open it up in photos and then proceed to make it full screen. Then go into a completely dark room (closet, bathroom with no windows, etc..) and look at your screen to see where the light bleeds from.

The color test (I'm assuming you mean the red/white/yellow tints) is done by doing the same exact thing as above but with a white background instead.

Also, I was in the same boat sort of as you. I had a Motorola Xoom for almost all of last year up until probably November. I just didn't use it enough and was just fed up with that device so I sold it. I've realized ever since that I've missed it, but currently, this is making me joyful and I love this amazing thing.

Don't get me wrong, that does look great, but I really wish that Apple gave the user more control over the camera. I noticed in your video plenty of times where the camera would refocus and refocus and then 5 seconds later, refocus. You didn't do anything wrong. It's just I wish it would focus, and if you needed it to, then you could tap the screen where it needs focused at instead of it autofocusing constantly like it does.

I'm definitely not complaining because this is a great camera. My previous tablet was pretty good in this aspect, too. It had a 5 MP/HD quality shooter, and I was more than pleased with the results on there.

That's because I was tapping on random spots to focus on the corals. The problem is that the autofocus mechanism lags by a few seconds and with such shaky hands up close, it wouldn't hold in place. Also, the focusing problem arises from such close up where the depth of field is very shallow. The camera re-adjusts itself because I keep moving back and forth by a few centimeters on a DOF that is already stretched too thin. My Nikon D300 constantly refocus too when I hand hold macro shots, but it does it at much faster pace, and only take still shots.

For regular shots where DOF is greater, focusing will unlikely be a problem. however I wish Apple would give us more control over the camera such as AF and exposure lock.

Editing on the iPad can be a bit tedious because of the way files are organized on the iPad. The camera just dumps all the files under camera roll and it is difficult to sort your videos as you are unable to rename, tag and organize our files under folders. I also wish iMovie allowed finer controls and color correction a la Aperture or Lightroom. I guess it is ok for quick home movies on the go, but you would still depend heavier desktop apps for finer editing. Overall, it's not bad considering the minimal amount of work put into this little video. It was my first time editing a video in iMovie too.

ps: avoid Avid studio as this app keeps crashing when exporting project.

Just got my dodo case. So far really like it. Surprising how well it holds on the iPad. This is an iPad 2 model but it works perfectly with the 3rd gen iPad.

So, reasons for just getting an iPad 2 instead.

1. Refurb it costs $150 less, which is significant

2. The screen is truly cutting edge and so they probably haven't quite perfected its manufacture.

3. lack of retina apps

4. Most stuff actually looks significantly worse on the new screen because of the high resolution.

1: Perfectly valid, and the route that my friend took. He knew that the iPad 2 would meet all of his needs, and the cost savings couldn't be ignored.

2: Valid concern, but will be corrected with time

3: See 2

4: See 3

Is there any chance that once apps are updated to retina-level resolution, the ipad 1 and 2 will struggle to render the high res graphics at an acceptable framerate?

Not unless it's an incredibly poorly designed app.

The iPad 1 kinda struggles with everything by now though.

My incipio smart feather case arrived today, and it is really nice. I really cant feel the difference in weight, and fits great.

I kind of want to get a leather smart cover instead of my polyurethane one though.
