I'm just in love with this screen. The colors are unreal. Like the best printed magazine ever. Unreal.

Well, I did a mini comparison to my iPad 2 in case anyone is interested:

Awesome review. I like your review style. You get right-down-to-da-point, with full of critical info.

Great 2 hear that the new iPad is indeed putting out better sound (treble extensions and punchier lows) out of the 3.5mm headphone port than the iPad2. Let me make sure I got this correctly, is the soundstage equally as good as the Macbook Pro or is it less? cause I really like the wideness of the soundstage Macbook pro provides.

I can understand that the new pad requires higher res video content to make visuals look fantastic. You kept mentioning about "overly smooth" part. Actually that is one of the things I was wondering / concerned about. To view 720 mkv files, is the PQ a little downgrade from the iPad2? I mean not in terms of color depth and contrast / blacks, but "sharpness" of the picture, or should I say... "authentic" or "crisp" look. Can you verify on this.

Thanks a oil tanker,

It's less soundstage. Somehow it feels more congested, but only slightly. I'd say that on a scale of 0 to 10, the iPad 3 is about 6-7. I ripped my Blu-Ray Blue Man Group - How To Be a Megastar LIVE! 2008 to 1080p on both the iPad 2 and iPad 3 to try things out (in MP4 format, of course).

Using the same sample, I can't say there is any loss of quality on the iPad 3. In fact, I think the iPad 3 looks sharper overall. But that's 1080p. I don't have any 720p sample to test, sadly.

Edit: never mind, turns out my LOD cable was faulty, too. Got another one in there, and indeed, the line-out through the iPad 3 is also improved over iPad 2. I'm getting about the same soundstage as the MacBook Pro now (9/10 or less). Impressive, to say the least.

I think aside from the screen, the sound quality is the other thing I'm most pleased with the iPad 3.

Sounds good... that's still very good considering it's coming from that thin little ipad device. I personally kind of liked the iPad2 sound, but good 2 know that iPad 3 is better.

Yeah I got lots of 720p mkv files (drama series) which I depend on quite a bit... For all my music video / TV performance stuff, are in 1080i TS.

I would recommend that you convert them to MP4. MP4 uses hardware decode and I'd think that should save battery life.

Also updated impression on LOD above. My LOD cable was faulty too (coincidence?). A new LOD cable makes it sound very very close to my MBP, which is... wow.

Does anyone know how to get iMessage to send a receive via one contact? As in, I send messages from iMessage from my iPhone and iPad, and yet, they both send via two separate threads.

I tried with 3 people and all 3 of them asked me why it made a new thread. I thought iMessage was essentially supposed to just be attached to your iTunes account and then from there on out, it works synchronously..

Any help would be immensely appreciated!

Other than that, this thing rules.

Finally got around to syncing my iTunes music library on to my new iPad.

I'm down to 500MB free storage left out of 32GB!

Anyway, I just confirmed via some of my better test track. The iPad 3 is indeed behind the MacBook Pro in terms of soundstage by a good tiny bit, but it's noticeable. Still, it's still very good compared to iPhone 4 or iPad 2.

I completely agree. I bought it the instant I got my iPhone. Definitely the best $25 investment so far on these guys.

Also, I apparently fixed it to show from one address. I'm just having a problem getting it to work correctly from my mother's MacBook Air and iPhone. I installed the beta of Messages, and it's only sending from her email on there and it won't send to my iPad if she uses my cell number on there.

This is so ridiculous. D:

That seems pointless. I feel like it should work like Google Voice. It should integrate your addresses into your iTunes account. However, regardless of the number you have set up for your phone or email address you have set to receive at, it should be sent to both which is why I think they should change it so you attach your accounts (email, cell) to a universal account.

I think you understand what I'm saying. I guess coming over to the Apple side still has it's shortcomings in some departments.

So far it's a pretty spectacular upgrade over the iPad 1. The screen is obviously the star of the show, but compared to the 1, it's way, way faster. Everything switches and renders faster, and surfing the web is SOOO much better now that pages render in quicker and more importantly, it can keep more than one page in memory at a time. Now you can load stuff up in the background, and the mere act of switching tabs doesn't dump the entire page and force a re-render. A lot of this was probably true for the iPad 2 as well, but I'm sure the full gigabyte of memory doesn't hurt.

It's still much heavier than I'd like, but it's solved most of the performance issues I had with the original iPad. It's totally replaced my laptop for couch-puting, and considering I have few work or content creation needs, it pretty much does everything I need. All I need now is a new case, and I'm set.

Kind of amazing what can be pulled off with what's technically a device that's still lower spec than many netbooks. Incredible combination of software and hardware.

So i set up my moms iPad last night (which i chose because it had worse light leak than the one i chose ), and fast forward to today when I wanted to set mine up. I immediately noticed something was off. Pictures confirm this, and she notices it too. Here are three images (left: her iPad, right: my iPad):

100% brightness, white screen

100% brightness, apple.com homepage

50% brightness, apple.com homepage

Does anyone see the difference? It's more dramatic in real life. It looks so much darker and more washed out...way less vibrant. In addition, there's like...a slight pink hue when you look at my screen at angles. I really don't feel like playing the return game, but her iPad is an absolute pleasure to use and mine looks like crap relatively speaking. Sorry for the crappy images lol. Thoughts? Thanks...

Her iPad looks like mine. It's slightly warm, but not overly so, and colors are deep and vibrant but not oversaturated.

I think you got unlucky and landed an LG panel. If it bothers you, I would say go for a return.

That's weird, now that you mention it I think you're right. Originally I thought hers had a cooler temp than mine. In the pics, it looks the other way. Do I just call and return? Or should I exchange? I really, really don't want to go to the apple store lol.

A cool alternative is the audiogalaxy app. Set up the client on the media pc, set the music shares, and you can stream over the internet from your device or even a web browser. I figure if I'm already streaming I may as well just cut out the middle man.

Oh crap... I see the big difference between the two. Yes, I see red tint towards the right of the screen. As you said, the brigtness is decreased in the affected area, too. Guys, this is what I meant by "uneven whites". Man that looks dreadful. Oh showed that to your mom so she's gonna want to keep hers... can't take it back from her. D:

Man, buying iPads (any gens) is like playing gamble... I'm glad I didn't go out and buy one...... yet.

You see, this is what Apple needs to do. Organize a special force (service ) for hand picking the iPads and go through inspection 10 times just for the screen part. Market this as "Deluxe" service and you pay extra for it, like another $250. I would pay for it, as long as it gives me assurance that one I will be getting is virtually display defect-free... I just do not want to drive to Apple store and back home 10 times. No freakin arse way..... I ain't doing that crap. But I would be glad to pay money!
