I'm referring to current gen as it has been, not up and coming. I'm very much excited for Kingdom Hearts 3.

Even though sadly Square doesn't have a great track record lately.

It was confusing because you quoted something that specifically said KH3. Thanks for the clarification.

No, it's not. It's not an RPG in that sense. It has bare minimum story. It's an open sandbox game with D&D style elements. It is in no way the type of RPG we are referring to here which is why I called it out because I knew people would be "but Skyrim is beautiful!" It is, but it also isn't an (eastern) RPG. The writing style for the game is completely different.

I'm not saying you couldn't make a game like Skyrim into a full fledged story driven RPG. I'm saying they don't want to spend the money/time to do it because the payback just isn't large enough in their eyes.

The game Exdeath is drooling on about is the right style, but the graphics are cartoony rather than realistic with 1000's of shaders/pixels/polys which is really not the same. That same game could have been released on the Wii (which is my point). It wasn't a graphically pushing game.

It's a trade off of what they want to spend their money on. Storyline and huge worlds or graphics. Some day maybe we can have both.

If you are bored, read this article. It talks about some key points about the state of gaming and RPGs. http://www.destructoid.com/xenoblade-chronicles-226518.phtml
CD Project Red is trying to do just that. A western open world RPG with story and character depth. Very ambitious, but I am in.

The traditional JRPGs are dying off. Square has been bad since they merged with Enix, if not slipping drastically before that. Myst Walker does nothing but write games, and then have trouble finding a studio to make it. JRPGs are on the way out. Hopefully, some indie developers take up the reigns, but really, I don't see it being possible for a couple guys to make a FFVI or a Chrono Trigger.

I disagree with you on the current gen too, but I like the Jap RPG's a lot.

The height of the RPG world came with the PS1 for me. Alundra, Final Fantasy games, Xenogears, all of those great games

Yes. Though I always throw PS2 in there as well. Kingdom Hearts and Xenosaga alone are notable, though PS2 also saw the deaths of Breath of Fire, Wild Arms, Final Fantasy, Mana, Suikoden, etc.

So in other words, you don't feel Skyrim is an RPG and exclude it out to try and make your point? Perhaps you should just describe the type of game you're talking about.

You keep speaking on behalf of other people, but I fall under other people, and don't agree with you. So let's focus on what YOU'RE looking for, not what "they" are looking for.

List an epic game that represents what you're describing.

Actually you are just being difficult. We're talking about JRPG's. Skyrim is not that, and if you think that is an RPG, well sorry. It's not. I'm not knocking it at all. I love the game, but it is not the type of game we are referring to in this thread. (and I'm not talking about just me).

They are still being made, just not on the high end systems.

Although, I just watched the trailer for X, made by the Xenogears/Xenoblade yadayada people and it looks like it "might" be up the alley of what we are talking about. Of course..once again, it's on the "low" graphics spectrum of systems for upcoming gens.

My prediction.

Microsoft will remove the insane always on DRM requirement and possibly lessen the used game restrictions AND drop the price by $50 before launch. They are not this stupid and have a ton of time before the holidays to do all of this.

I still think they are going to come out and be like "SURPRISE! XBONE was a ruse! Here is our real system." :sneaky:

I think MS just created the system for publishers to use, I don't think they force the use of it. So, publishers can choose to avoid it, and everything is the same; minus the Kinect 2 and phone home mechanisms (which I don't see going away). Will publishers avoid it? I hardly see EA skipping out on the chance to squash used games and I think they will try and implement something for the PS4, regardless of Sony supporting it or not.

I think MS went out on a limb and figured EA's online pass was here to stay. So, they created a solution that helps gamers avoid having to do things other than just pop in a game and play while accommodating EA's DRM requirements. Now, with Sony saying "nope, we don't support that" and EA saying "well, maybe online pass was a bad idea" MS is kind of left holding this "feature" trying to make the best of it.

The good large RPG's were on Wii. They can't make epic RPG's anymore when trying to worry about graphics whores. Sorry, it's just true. Even the CEO's/designers of games have said that. That's why most of the decent RPG's come out on the handhelds.

It costs way too much money and time to try to create the kind of worlds people want for the epic RPG's they also want. We're not talking Skyrim here, it's a completely different ball game. The RPG's put out on the Wii would not have happened on the 360/PS3 (and didn't) simply due to the graphics necessity.

Actually you are just being difficult. We're talking about JRPG's. Skyrim is not that, and if you think that is an RPG, well sorry. It's not. I'm not knocking it at all. I love the game, but it is not the type of game we are referring to in this thread. (and I'm not talking about just me).

Actually I'm not. NOW you specify JRPG. Please highlight where in your original statement you specified this? Also, just because it is a "western" RPG does not mean it is NOT an RPG.

I'm not the one being difficult. If you want to narrow the discussion, you should do so. You stating Skyrim is not an RPG doesn't make it so. You navigate a character, interact with NPC's and go on quests. You have to be trying to exclude Skyrim as an RPG. What about Skyrim makes it not an RPG?

So yeah, it may not be just you, but because everyone smokes doesn't make it healthy. Just makes the people that smoke dillusional.

They said that before. I feel as though my post about why MS implemented their DRM scheme is fairly accurate. I think companies will still try it here and there, but it might have died down enough we won't get online passes.

I am sure though, more games are going to require online "accounts" of some sort and be more and more like MMO type games. That way, you force DRM through "gameplay". Kind of like D3 is doing now.

What is the ship date for the ps4? Amazon said Dec 31, but I can't see that being correct.

this is just flat out false. no matter what publishers do, you can't resell your games or rent them from redbox.

Agreed. I need a FF10 type game. If FF15 doesn't deliver that's it. The New Final Fantasy games since FF10 have done nothing for me character wise. I CARED about the FF10 story. I loved it. I put in I think 200+ hours into the game easily. I haven't beat a single Final Fantasy game since 10. I don't care halfway through. The characters bore me, the graphics were stupid, the story line and cinematics did nothing for me. FF10 was where it ended for me. And why they won't remake FF7 when EVERY fan has asked for it just makes zero sense.

Square Enix is purposely trolling us and I dislike it.

Can you find a quote for this? I have read multiple locations that it's up to publishers. This is MS's biggest problem right now is that during their press conferences they sidestep the issue. I don't think they really have a COMPLETE set in stone plan at the moment....

I am not sure exactly how the system works (which nobody outside of MS really is, it seems), is there some actual link that shows how it works?

They could easily have a registration of some sort that allows you to play your game and if you don't register the game, you cannot play disc free. Otherwise, you must always have the disc in the console. Rental system fixed.

FFX was amazing. I used to play violin and even learned to play a lot of the songs. Definitely a WORK of art of a game. I don't think Any of the recent final fantasy games have did as well as FFX. That's why they're remaking it. I wish they'd remake FF7 though.

the only thing redeeming about FFX was the battle system--I thought that was really fun.
leveling with the circle whatever system was pretty bad--you just loop back and create an entire team of the exact same classes. terrible. --basically what happened with materia system in FF7.

It killed open world roaming. I think people that are really into the FFX and later games prefer their derivative games to be on rails, pretty much like CoD. I'm guessing they were only introduced to the series during the Sony years and have no early memories of what FF games were like.

also, the story was a major turd--almost as bad as FF8 and astonishingly, the characters were far more annoying.

wait...Skyrim is not an RPG? what the fuck....only JRPGs are RPG?

I don't get it--I find them (JRPG) to be RPG-lite in all honesty.

first paragraph below the last bullet point.

In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners.
