The idea is, they have a flashlight that has an operating energy source (that would be rather unrealistic) and they added a gimmick where you have to shake the controller. The issue is they decided to use a gimmick. The fact that people aren't labeling it as such, shows a lot of bias. Let's say MS did this with a new game they release, and rather than shake the controller, you have to wave your hands around and the Kinect picks it up. Thus, they are forcing a gimmick. People, especially those there, would be furious.

So, ND, uses a gimmick, that could have easily been something that added to the game (such as energy source management, which would fit in an type of game in that setting). Instead of doing that, they made a decision to force the six axis stuff.

Dude you can have flashlights that run on a battery that recharges by shaking it. I have one. So you shake the controller a bit to simulate shaking the flashlight. Big friggen deal...

Find something more creative to whine about

if there is 1 thing i've learned since e3, it's that if you say anything about anything on sony platform that isn't 100% positive and dick sucking, then a huge deal will be made about it lol. this whole discussion came about because i mentioned that i didn't know what the icon on screen meant, then when i was told what it was, i said 'eh that is a lame gimmick not necessary' and the normal people are all up in arms now.

EDIT

AND BEFORE ANYONE CRIES I AM ONLY 1/4 SERIOUS!!!

And now you know how people feel when people endlessly defend MS whenever someone said "that sounds stupid"

yes i've played it, and the fact that it has happened like maybe 4 times in 6-7 hours or so doesn't really add anything to it. especially since clickers are blind and the light doesn't phase them.

we'll agree to disagree - i'm simply not a fan of gimmicks lol.

That is laughable. The entire Kinect is a huge gimmick and you will defend that until your dying breath

"OMG you dislike part of a game from Lord Sony! You're stupid!" Yeah, we get it.

Flashlights you shake generally don't use batteries, they use ultra capacitors. And a battery would not hold a charge 20 years later. Go use the flashlight you have to shake, and then tell me it works for any prolonged period of time.

And I already said I was nitpicking, and that "feature" they decided was to be core gameplay is stupid. There are plenty of better alternatives that could have been done, but weren't.

Sweet Jesus we are really nitpicking at this point. Complaining about shaking the controller for a second as a gimmick is a bit much, but whatever. Plain and simple, if that is your one complaint about this game, then I would say they nailed it.

i didn't want to talk about this more but i will give it another response.

1. it didn't build tension in any dark areas or hasn't happened often. it's happened about 4 times in 8 or so hours, and it's always when i'm just scavenging. it isn't annoying or anything i just had no clue why the graphic to tip my controller was showing up. like i didn't even notice that my light had died at any of those 4 times.

2. if you wanna get technical about the types of flashlights, well the type of flashlight is mounted to his shirt or backpack strap, so it's not one that you would be holding in your hand and shake to get it going again.

i personally found it very gimmicky and it didn't add anything. it didn't take away like it did in uncharted 2 in those instances you mention, but it definitely did not add to the experience at all other than being a novelty. neat i guess but just pointless.

Maybe it depends on how often you use the flashlight. Sometimes I watch a playthrough at work, and I've seen it go out several times in the dark when surrounded by clickers. And I dont think there is a reason why an L shaped flashlight couldnt be adapted to electromagnetic induction. You could probably use a cheap $10 shake light and put it in an L shaped housing. If society has collapsed and energy conservation is important, it's reasonable to me that someone would have crafted their own. It is a game after all, and it just has to be good enough that you dont have a WTF moment. Obviously thats different for each person. If you are OK with combining rags and alcohol to create med kits, and tape and a broken scissors to make a one time use shiv, the flashlight shouldnt be a problem.

I am generally a nit picking kind if guy when it comes to entertainment. I wouldn't have a huge problem with alcohol and rags being a medkit, because you'd have a bandage and a disinfectant. Scissors and tape wouldn't be that big of a stretch, if the scissors were pointed. I have seen the plastic around cigarette packs and a lighting be used to make a shiv. I'd be okay with someone taking an L shaped flashlight and putting the guts of a induction light inside it (as that wouldn't be terribly hard), but I have a problem with it lasting for a long time. The current induction lights I've used have awful life and need to be "charged" quite often.

Yeah, but its probably for gameplay reasons. I bought some of those crank lights at Costco, and the time spent charging it is less than the amount of useable light you get. Its either what they have now, or really make it annoying by making the player do it every minute.

So, let's talk about the PlayStation 4!

What feature do you like the most about it?
What feature do you want to see?
What don't you like about it? (I better not see any "everything!" responses )
Do you think any features will end up being lackluster?

Sweet Jesus we are really nitpicking at this point.

I'm rather unsure how complaining about minute aspects of a PS3 game really applies to a PS4 thread. You can attempt to talk about the PS4, but inevitably, the conversation will take a serious detour.

hahaha Thats how all this started...the PS Eye not being included with the PS4. PS EYE -> gimmicks -> using sixaxis in The Last of US -> effectiveness of alternative flashlights. How could this thread end up any other way?

Until the ps4 and xb1 are out and in our homes there will always be something to nitpick at.

What I like about ps4: cheaper than the ps3 at launch and cheaper than Xbox 1. I like that it uses ddr5 memory. I like the look of the controller compared to ps3. I like the games it will have as I've liked Sony lineup before.

I don't like that you have to pay for psn and we don't know if it will be a better community yet. I don't like that there is no release date yet or anything else on the UI and what other features it may have.

If you have the time and are interested in behind the scenes history/info on the Playstation consoles as well as how and why Sony changed so much in their approach of the PS4 watch this video. It is a bit long (50 mins), but it is a very easy watch, Mark Cerny (guy who did a lot of the PS4 unveil when Knack was being shown) does the presentation (from Gamelab 2013). He is easy to listen to and makes it easy to follow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns21_nMzVFM&feature=youtu.be&t=2m35s

It really makes light of how the PS3 was a mess and how things have changed for them a lot in the way they tackled the PS4.

Feature I like most?
That's easy...Instant Resume! Turn the system off, and when it power on... TAAA DAA...your game is exactly where it left off Same thing the vita can do.

Feature I wanna see?
Stream a game to another TV in the house via wifi (like vita stream except not to the VITA). Like If I have the PS4 in the living room but the TV is used and I wanna play on the big screen...stream it to the TV in the bedroom (provided it's a supported TV like Sony models perhaps?). Just use your wireless controller.

What don't I like about it?
Hard to say at this point. The only thing I have not heard anything about but if it isn't there I'll probably be a little bit puzzled is installing a game to the HDD from the disk and using the disk to authenticate. The disk load times can be long, and I still want the disk so I can deal but being able to install data to the HDD to reduce or eliminate load times is a plus.

Just got this email from Gamestop. Kinda odd considering rumors say the PS4 won't be out until Novemember.

Yeah I think they send those out to all pre-orders regardless. Remember when Max Payne 3 came out on PC later than console by like 2 weeks? I got the txt from gamestop to come get it and at the store they said "oh the date for PC is in two weeks. I guess they don't differentiate which version you pre-order"

Streaming to a Vita. I never get to game in front of the TV anymore and the PS4 is the only hope. I don't have a Vita yet, but will pick one up closer to launch. Really, really excited about this. The fact that the PS4 has the more powerful hardware, is just icing on the cake.

I have a Vita, and still don't understand how this is going to work. The vita only has an L and R shoulder button, and the analog sticks aren't buttons. I feel like the games I could play would be pretty limited because of it.

Touch pad support? *shrug* yeah though...not enough real buttons.

I probably ought to answer some of my own questions!

What feature are you the most interested in?
If I had to choose one, it would probably be the Vita streaming. I don't think that it's life changing, but I think it will be the most interesting if it's done well. A second one would be the ability to watch people or jump into games. I don't know if I'll really use it much, but I think it's a pretty nifty feature if you've got some close friends that also play some of the same games.

What feature do you want to see?
I would like to see software updates streamlined and the overall duration significantly decreased. If I remember correctly, the PS3 firmware is only about 300MB, but it takes over 5 minutes for me to download it through the PS3 on a 60Mbps connection. Also, I would love to see installs go away as they just seem to prolong the process. Steam and the 360 do not perform installs.

[EDIT]
I recalled something that I think I would really like to see more of as well. I think one of the biggest problems that I have is the lack of demos. For example, Muramasa Rebirth came out for the Vita this past Tuesday, and I'm interested in the game. However, I'm not willing to lay down $40 when I may not care for the game. So, I would really like to try a demo, but there isn't one. I do recall Sony mentioning something about using time trials for games, and I do believe that PlayStation Plus has some time trials available now. I think either time trials or a demo would be fine with me.
[/EDIT]

What don't you like about it?
If I had to complain about anything, I think the lack of release titles that I'm interested in is fairly low. However, that's pretty much the case with the X1 as well.

Do you think any features will be lackluster?
I noticed that no one has answered this one yet, but to me, it's the most important question. In a sense, this inquires about your faith in Sony's ability to perform. I don't dislike the PlayStation 3, but I definitely recognize some of its shortcomings, and I guess part of me worries that Sony may not think outside of the box. For example, will the streaming feature be useful to any current streamers? I believe that would require aspects such as overlays, which I believe Microsoft has announced (some?) support for.

Touch pad support? *shrug* yeah though...not enough real buttons.

That would be my guess. The touchpad on the back of the Vita is pretty big overall, and you could easily separate half for each trigger. Although, I still think using the rear touchpad is rather awkward.

Yea they did say developers would have to adapt buttons to touch which would not be the greatest thing.

What feature do you like the most about it?
I really can't narrow it down to a single, or few, points. I like the hardware well enough, but it is the software I am most interested in.

What feature do you want to see?
I want to see their online infrastructure and UI integration with it. They can expect a large majority of PS4 owners to have PS+ now, and with that extra stream of money, I sure hope they invest it into their online capabilities. The PS3 failed in that aspect, and I don't think Sony can afford a repeat. Sure, the PS4 is gaining steam, but if they fail to deliver a good online experience, I don't see them being successful. We know MS is going to deliver, at the very worst, XBL (which was really good) and integrate it.

What don't you like about it? (I better not see any "everything!" responses ) I really don't like Sony's focus on indie games. That won't carry the console, and personally, I dislike almost all indie games. They need to show off some first party support and get some third party magic going. I care very little to play some games I can buy on Steam for $5 a 6 months before the console releases (Don't Starve).

Do you think any features will end up being lackluster?
I guess I am in the minority here, but the Gaikai streaming sounds like it won't be great. OnLive was terrible and I imagine this being only slightly better. It might work for PS1 and 2 games, due to the size being easily streamed at 100%, but for a 30gb game, I just don't see it translating nearly as well as most of you seem to hope it will. But, we will see, I suppose.

the main thing i don't like about the ps4 is the launch-window lineup. it has nothing that interests me that won't be out on another console.

the main thin that DOES interest me is the hope that the studios i do like are working on the franchises that i love (ratchet and clank, hot shots golf, uncharted, jak and daxter, god of war) and i don't see why they wouldn't be working on those games. i also hope to see some new things as well. knack does look interesting too though, and the production values in it seem very good as well.

i personally don't really care about any other "featues" of the consoles other than playing games.

one can say the same for either console, everyone is different as for me nothing on the xbox interests be besides halo which is years out

also everyone i know IRL has a PS3 and will get a PS4. close to no one has a 360
makes my decision pretty easy
