What I like:
New controller, hardware, swappable hard drive, instant on and pay for psn (assuming it increases quality which is my expectation)

Don't like:
New controller (its better but not like xb1 style), exclusives

also everyone i know IRL has a PS3 and will get a PS4. close to no one has a 360
makes my decision pretty easy

I just hope the PS4 doesn't update all the damn time like the PS3. When I'm tired and just want to watch Netflix I don't want to do ANOTHER damn update just to watch Netflix. It's friggen annoying.

yah i'm hoping with the x1 and ps4 i will be be able to get rid of my sony bluray player that i got so i could do 3d + hd audio tracks at the same time, since the ps3 had the older version of hdmi. i'm assuming the new consoles will have the most recent lol.

with all the talk about 4k upscaling i would assume so but i dont think anyone has said for sure yet

The HDMI 2.0 spec isn't finished as far as I know, so I sure hope they can get it in time. Or at least, a 'prefinished' spec, otherwise they are limited to 4k @ 30hz, and that is lame. Plus, displays themselves don't have the new HDMI either, so I doubt 4k is going to take off.

You should be able to set it up for automatic updates since the console has various power states instead of just on/off option.

I know the Xbox has announced background downloading and I believe the PS4 also has this. So, in theory, you can download the system update while playing and then just take a few minutes to install it at your leisure. Hopefully, they will have an option to "install any new updates upon system shut down" or something like that. It can easily just install it when you are no longer using the console and everyone should be happy.

While I don't care about that so much, here is an interesting snip about the paid online service. I am curious if this will be the same on Xbone.

Yoshida was quick to point out, however, that a PlayStation Plus membership would not be required for online play or video services that weren’t “realtime.” He also revealed that if the main account on a system had a PlayStation Plus membership, all other accounts on the PlayStation 4 would receive the same benefits, meaning families won’t be required to pay for multiple memberships.

I believe MS said the same thing about Xbox Live accounts, and that is why they dropped the family plan.

IIRC they will have background downloading so it shouldn't be an issue. Also if you have PS+ you can schedule your system to turn on at whatever time you want to check for updates (even checks for games installed on your system) and download/install them (doesn't install for the games but for system updates it does). I have mine set to turn on at like 4am and check, works nicely. I'd image they will keep this feature at the very least or because of the background downloading get rid of it since the system will automatically DL an update as soon as it detects it.

Not surprising one bit that Sony will continue to support the PS3. They did the same thing with the PS1 and PS2. They truly believe in giving their consoles a 10 year life cycle.

Likewise. All my friends DID have 360's as well but the RROD changed that. I was the first to get rid of the 360 after the third RROD and when MS sent back a fixed console I sold it. Each one of my friends did the same thing.

Same with me. I think its because we are all older (mid 30-40s), and use it more for media (blu-ray, netflix, etc).

the main thin that DOES interest me is the hope that the studios i do like are working on the franchises that i love (ratchet and clank, hot shots golf, uncharted, jak and daxter, god of war) and i don't see why they wouldn't be working on those games. i also hope to see some new things as well. knack does look interesting too though, and the production values in it seem very good as well.

Knack is kind of amusing for me. When I first saw it at the reveal in February, I didn't really care about it because it wasn't very telling of the story. It sort of felt more like a physics tech demo than a game. E3 sort of changed that as I think the game looks a lot better now, and it's one of the top games on my radar right now for either console.

Although, I really have to say that I hope that I never see another God of War game. They are just milking the hell out of that series.

The fat ps3 can bitstream blu-ray audio as of a couple years ago.

Hmm... I don't think that's right. It can output the audio as PCM, which is really just the PS3 decoding Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master instead of your AVR. I recall only being able to enable bitstreaming on my upstairs TV when I replaced the fat PS3 with a slim.

It does reference the slim though. I'll keep searching...I thought it did. My receiver doesn't decode dtshd-ma so I always just used lpcm
