My 1st gen PS3 60GB was loud ass hell and did indeed run hot but it wasn't as bad as my launch edition 360 that sounded like a blower. Had to blast the sound system up to drown the noise out but now i have a PS3 Slim which is very quiet barely hear it at all and my 360 slim is quiet too but you can hear the disc spinning but its not bad.
The launch 360's fans were pretty small. Think they were only 60mm if that. Plus it got hot so they had to run at full tilt all the time. Bigger fans are quieter because they don't have to turn as fast to move the same amount of air.
The Phat PS3 has a big blower fan in the bottom with a laptop style heatpipe. The 360 used a traditional heatsink with two small ducted fans. RROD was mainly caused by inadequate ventilation. Where as the YLOD I suspect was caused by lack of ventilation at the top of the PS3's case, where the power supply is.
