That's not what he said. Gamestop is the biggest video games retailer out there and they may be deliberately trying to hurt their business.

I thought the whole Sony Killing Used Games rumor was debunked awhile ago... by Sony... saying they wouldn't do it. So... why are we talking about it like it's real?

I will reserve judgement until we know for sure. I can say that if this is not true then I may be in line on PS4 release day.

Here's a hint for you...if they want to get continued support from the largest video game retailer in the world, they will not block used.

Xbox doesn't seem to care, didn't think Sony would either. We will have to wait and see but my local GS Manager is a friend of mine so if either company pulls that crap they will lose us as a customer.

Do you really believe if GameStop goes out of business it will hurt video game sales? Maybe for the first week. One, they wouldn't just shut their doors overnight, so people would know about it. Two, there are numerous other retailers who will just get more copies to sell now. Three, Amazon would likely take over.

Amazon isn't an advertising space though. Gamestop is and it is huge. They have thousands of retail stores. That's a lot of people to market your games and systems to with standees and posters hanging in the windows.

Walmart and target don't advertise the same way, not even toys r us.

People would still buy games but I am talking about sales gained through clever advertising in the malls and other shopping locations.

Did you miss the post where I said I don't follow this stuff religiously? If they don't block used games then good for them, if they do then boycott. Simple enough.

Yet those of us who do follow this stuff keep telling you used games will be permitted but you continue to post statements such as "reserve my judgement" and throw out "if they don't" and "wait and see" like you anticipate the great apocalypse of used games and Gamestop which is against the view of all other analysts and spokespersons.

edit: I realize my stance towards you may be rather bellicose, but I just find it annoying how you persist in the used games rumour. Just trust us, there is no risk this generation.

If people were really buying used to save money, they would be buying on Amazon anyway since 90% of the time it's going to be cheaper new there versus Gamestop used.

Again, Sony didn't say they were banning used games, but there will be a mechanism available to publishers if they want it. IOW, Sony published games will allow it but third party publishers will block it. We'll have to see. I imagine the voucher/anti-used game stuff will be expanded at the very least.

I think Gamestop used (and other similar stores) just gets people that like the convenience of making cheap impulse purchases. Think about it, pay $19.99 now for a game your kid likes and can have fun with immediately, vs pay $12 + shipping (or even free shipping with prime) and wait for it to be delivered. For many people $10 vs $20 is pretty meaningless, but $20 vs. $50-$60 is a big deal, particularly if their kid gets bored with the game after a week or two per usual.

Recent games are typically only $5 cheaper used at Gamestop versus their new price. And it's still cheaper new elsewhere. You're not going to see anything similar to a $20 vs $50 scenario at Gamestop.

No but on older used games, they can be real cheap. Picked up Assassin's Creed on PS3 for $8 which isn't a huge savings over Amazon but still a pretty good deal.

Well, that's not really what I'm saying at all.

$20 vs. $50 is comparing some 1-2 year old game vs. a new release title, that's what I meant.

Since we're already turning this PS4 thread into a rather Gamestop-centric thread, let me help. I've been curious at how well Gamestop is doing. Locally, I was in a store maybe a month ago, and one of the employees was standing in line to preorder some games (he just got off work). He was talking to me and telling me how they sold some of their protection plans today; apparently, they really need that because they're not doing so well.

I was thinking about that, and honestly... I'm not surprised. Gamestop is pretty much just not priced well at all. Even other B&M retailers have sales ever so often on games or other deals to get a reduced cost on a game. I rarely see Gamestop doing anything interesting when it comes to pricing. The only reason that I go there is when they have interesting pre-order bonuses (the Assassin's Creed IV poster), or if it's a niche game that no one else has (Persona 4: Golden), and I don't want to wait for Amazon.

I used to go there to get every game but there is no point. $5 bucks off a used brand new game doesn't matter to me. I usually just go there now just to get a special game like you mentioned above. Even used controllers are a little over priced. With amazon and other places to get your games the gamestop stores are no longer needed that much.

Unless you just want a used console but now we can browse here or locally for even better deals. I remember when I had a n64 and I traded about 30 games in. They gave me a total of 20 bucks. Their resale values are ridiculous on stuff they buy from you. But that is how they make their profit or now barely.

I read an article earlier on Ars about PS4 pricing, and they say that it's going to "target gamers in the broadest sense." Obviously, that still leads to nothing but speculation. At least based on what we know, I wouldn't mind seeing it for around $400-450. $400 would probably be the sweet spot, because it would be $50 more than the Wii U Deluxe, but you could argue that it offers more for that premium. They could offer a higher-priced model for extras such as a larger hard drive (750GB+?), more controllers, or perhaps even a packaged launch title?

So, what sort of price would you guys be alright with? What sort of premiums would you like to see packaged in and for what cost?

I'm fully expecting the PS4 to be $400-$500 with the higher end being for a premium/deluxe sku.

I'll buy the premium/deluxe one more than likely as long as the extras are worth it in my eyes.

Either way I am getting a PS4 on launch.

i won't pay more than $500 for the "premium" (if there even are tiers) for either the ps4 or durango. i won't 100% pay $500 either, but at $501 i would not be a buyer.

but i won't be buying either of them at any price if there are no games to play at launch.

at least that is the plan. i may fall for all the hype though like i did with the wii, and nearly with the wii-u.

Hmm games are a good point. How many would you want to see? At a minimum, I think that I'd like to see about 2 games at a $400 price point and 3 games at a $500 price point.

Although, I think the hardest part for Sony right now is... what games do they need to focus on. For example, Call of Duty may be one of the best selling games, but I don't know if it would really sell consoles... especially if it's available cross-generation! I think Sony needs to ensure they have games that are both exclusive and unique. For example, I think the Final Fantasy title could be a good launch title, but I think that would also be Squaresoft's first launch title... ever. (I'm not sure about Enix or Square-Enix as a publisher.) I also think that offering certain games that are typically PC-centric games may be helpful. For example, The Witcher has always had a stronger focus on the computer (The Witcher 2 Extended Edition did come out for the 360), but imagine if they could offer an experience that looked close enough to some top PCs? That could certainly wow some folks!

Yeah, I tend to lean toward the fancier editions in most cases. Although, I think it will take more than just a larger hard drive to win me over... especially if the hard drive can be replaced easily! Heck, if that's the case, I might consider replacing it with a SSD given the way SSD prices are becoming manageable for higher sizes (Samsung's TLC drives and Crucial's new M5).

I still wonder whether Sony will address the issue of it being too simplistic for some of today's existing streamers. These streamers would certainly want things such as overlays that include things like static images (team logos, sponsors, etc.) and webcam feed. The latter shouldn't be hard to do as I believe Sony was planning on packaging a Playstation Eye 2 with the console anyway?

Hard to say on what stuff the streaming might have. They could maybe offer a free barebones video editor with it or have one you can purchase for people more serious about it. Yeah the PS Eye is standard with every system though.
