like I said...they don't know how to optimize performance for all the stuff they cram in.

Has nothing to do with Optimize. WoW, a game out for years with probably the best server tech for MMOs crashed when they released their new island with a world boss where everyone and their mother could get loot. You had 100+ players storming this one small area causing uneven server balance and basically knocking that whole spot off the grid.

Only optimization for such events is restricting the amount of people that can participate. And last I heard, that is what Square did. Guess it wasn't enough for PS4 clients though. PS3 clients didn't even get to see the event, people would show up and report nothing would load for them haha.

I've been in the Odin fight on a PS3, PS4, and a PC.

Basically, on the PS3 there's not enough memory available for all the people running around and you'll have stuff not displaying. This is typical of big FATE encounters, that the PS3's memory isn't sufficient. It helps if you have a SSD in the PS3, though. The system will have less object pop-in and disappearance that way.
- FPS will be effected by the low CPU performance though, and you can expect it to be really low FPS in something like Odin.

On the PS4 there's plenty of memory and graphics performance, so you don't have problems with object pop-in and the like, but the CPU performance isn't sufficient for all the people running around. FPS can drop below 30 sometimes in big FATEs like Odin. I've had it run fairly OK, though.
- I've been in big FATEs like Odin several times, and never had a crash issue, although I'm sure it's possible, since it would push the thermal ceiling of the PS4, and if someone didn't have their PS4 in as open an area as mine, it could overheat.

My PC handles Odin well, with a 2500k OCed to just 4.2 GHz. Although, I watched CPU utilization during one smaller Odin fight, and it was getting close to max (between 87%). I've never seen any other game push the CPU anywhere close to that hard, and can say that anyone with a more modest desktop CPU, like an i3, or an AMD 8350, would probably hit a CPU bottleneck in the Odin fight, and see a FPS drop (like the PS4).

Like I thought...it's performance related. It has everything to do with optimizing the game for the hardware you are supporting. If the performance tanks, you have to make adjustments somewhere for that platform. Whether it's server side or client side.

Large boss fights with many users, have always stressed systems. Even on games with modest graphics. So, I don't think it's a problem with optimization. I think that it's just tapping out the limits on how much CPU processing power is available in those little Jaguar cores.

Generally, ARR runs smoothly and looks good on the PS4. It performs very similarly to if you were running on a mid-ranged gaming PC. I still think the PS4 offers good performance for the money...

It's always been a problem for FF Online games even when FFXI was 7 years old a high end PC still had performance tank at times.

Defiance was the same way. During an Arkfall, every character model but your own was defaulted to a stock character, and it STILL lagged like crazy and was unplayably-bad at times. Heck, when you were around more than 10 people, it would default every other player to that stock character, though it didn't lag.

Defiance was actually a decent game, it just got destroyed by the last-gen hardware, which had no chance of running the game reliably on a PS3 or 360.

Back in City of Heroes, zones were limited to 64 players per instance when going into large boss fight stuff and I don't remember ever having issues with that. In GW2 it was so laggy when we fought a boss because it looked like there were 100-120 people in the area. I think there should be a set limit to a number of players to prevent server crashes.

You can't really "optimize" something like that. A trillion billionty particles is simply a trillion billionty particles. You either start dropping things without consent of the player or let the GPU deal with it and hope for the best.

I don't get why he keeps using the word "optimize" in this context. He should be using "cull" instead, which is what Square (Blizzard, and pretty much everyone in these situations end up doing.)

You can't really optimize a situation where the defining factor is the number of players. So, you start culling the amount of players that will be allowed into a certain zone (creating "instances") or if it's so open world you start limiting the amount of players/objects/effects being rendered.

I remember doing Odin on my PC, at Ultra settings I was down to 1-2 FPS, at the lowest setting I gained an FPS, and then the server crashed. Haha. EDIT: I'd like to add that this was on a heavily populated server, prime time, and first week of launch when Square was blocking new users on servers because of congestion and 2+ hour queues. If anything, Square can't handle high server loads to save themselves. beside that 45 minute delay at launch I've yet to experience a queue or server down time on Wildstar.

Maybe wrong wording but what I mean is if your performance runs into the ground, you should do something to help with it. Whatever it may be. No game should ever hit 2fps...that's below unplayable.

So finally get around to playing Infamous SS. Got it at release but my daughter was born that week and never got a chance to play. Anyways, the R1 button on both of controllers is sticking. What is the best course of action dealing the controllers? Try to take them apart or try to get Sony to replace them? Do the new ones still have this issue?

Mine seem like they stick a little too. Sony will replace them for you of you call them but you would be out of a controller. You could just buy one while you send yours in for a replacement. At one point you may end up with 2 controllers anyway.

FYI, there's a Resogun update out today (PlayStation Blog). It includes a few new features including custom ships (incoming phallic flyers!) and couch co-op. It also sets up the underpinnings for the upcoming DLC expansion called Heroes (article, trailer), which comes out this Tuesday (6/24) for a mere $5!

I've been waiting on a resogun update. I've beat the whole game on master difficulty too. I thought I saw somewhere it was $5 for the first dlc or $7.49 for a season pass which I would definitely get. Glad to see the devs updating this game it really is a gem.

Anyone else try out the new Resogun modes or check out the ships? I tried Demolition, which just gives you a bomb, and you can knock around a ball to help destroy things. It's interesting, but I prefer Survival more. There are also lots of crazy ships already available from the T.A.R.D.I.S. to Mario to Pikachu! D:

So I got me a PS4 with Killzone bundle. I played it a bit (2GB update first...) and I don't know... It's no Crysis 3 in terms of visuals. Looks nice I guess, but I had nice for a few years already. Story is confusing, no idea why I'm doing the things... I guess I'm missing out by not having played the previous games? It's fun in general, I guess? A bit boring though...

I have had PS+ for almost a year now (have a PS3 too) so I have other games waiting to be checked out. Then there's The Last of Us once it's out...

Btw. the fan on this thing can get seriously loud. Louder than my slim PS3! It's not Xbox-level loud but I thought those things were supposed to be rather silent? It's ok in menus but when playing Killzone, it gets really noticeable, even over game sounds.

Anything else recommended?

Until Destiny comes out I am still just mostly playing Dynasty Warriors 8.
I have it preordered so the beta should be releasing soon and that will give me something else to play.

Killzone looks good but sucks. It was boring for me. Infamous is a fun game, you may like it. If you are into baseball mlb the show 14. Even if you aren't, I'm not and I really enjoy that game.

I hear a lot of hate on Killzone, if it's that badly mentioned then it's probably not that good of a game, kind of like that last Wolfenstein game. Apparently FIFA 14 has mixed hate and love, some say it was the worst FIFA release to date from EA.

NBA 2K14 is another one of those must-have titles besides MLB The Show, I'm not that big into the NBA anymore (used to be back in the 80's and 90's) but man I like how the decisions you make in that game reflects in different outcomes.

Killzone isn't bad in terms of game play but it falls flat on purpose. The story doesn't have any tension to it, no real drive for the player, and they don't make the characters likeable. I am playing FIFA 14 on xb1 and it has a lot of depth. I haven't played much yet but there seems to be a ton of control over your team and players. I am not a soccer fan but the game really feels good to play. Unlike NBA 2k14 which I felt was too easy to score on and defense took a back seat, FIFA feels more like the game you watch on TV. It seems like you have a chance to score and bam, something happens to throw you off. Really makes you work for your goals. It is like MLB the show in that way, you have to work for those points and can't rest because you are ahead. I really like that aspect.

Other ps4 games I would recommend if you haven't played them yet include assassins creed 4, resogun, infamous, the last of us which comes out near the end of this month if you missed it on ps3, and destiny which has a beta coming this month if you pre-order it. I would definitely recommend pre-ordering destiny, playing the beta, and if you don't like it that much canceling your pre-order. The alpha test was fantastic and I played probably 20 hours over a weekend just on the little bit we got to see. It is totally worth checking out and it is no loss if you happen yo dislike it.

Also as I am sure you are aware, psn+ members get two free games a month to download.

Thanks guys. I'm not into sports games at all.

Yea, I'm tempted with Destiny, but I'm on 3G for the next 2-3 months, so any multiplayer is a no-go. I have all the PS+ PS4 games on my account, currently trying out Contrast (runs a bit choppy...), then I think I'll check out Resogun.

I'm thinking about Infamous Second Son and then ofc The Last of Us once it's out (didn't play it on the PS3). I stopped playing Assassin's Creed after Brotherhood (I hated Revelations so just stopped). I don't know whether I want to start it again with AC4...

And yea, PS+ has been really cool, for the most part.

How are the cooling fans for you all? Playing Contrast they were really going on my nerves and they did not stop until I put the console to sleep (I went back to XMB and they were still spinning the same, even after a few minutes).
