it doesn't have to always be online to work though...

Read the whole thing. You need to subscribe to live for discount price if you cancel that, inject code to lock the system until you pay etf. So even offline it will not work.

Just one way to prevent people getting cheap systems. If they do a subscription model they have to have some plan in place.

Not even phone companies can get away with this, and they get away with a lot of crap that doesn't fly in other sectors. I find it hard to believe if MS does this a class action lawsuit wouldn't follow fairly swiftly. Bricking a console seems a bit harsh. I assume, they will just ban the account and send it to collection agencies willing to hunt the person down, but was wondering if they had actually announced anything about it.

I also think this will be much less of an issue than with phones. Most phone companies that give subsidies on phones charge $100+ a month. Much bigger hit on the wallet than the $15 a month for the Xbox price.

And if you think about it, the deal isn't that bad for people who are already paying the $10 a month subscription for Xbox Live. They save the initial $200 or whatever, and pay an extra $5 a month than what they would already be paying for 2 years.

I find this funny because every time someone brings up cost of live or something about it and say how it is $6 a month a ton of others come in say no one pays that they are idiots if they do since you can get 12 month cards for $40 etc etc.

yeah, and that is not possible on the 360. when banned from live, you could play games just fine offline, you simply could not connect to live. i know, i had a banned 360 long ago.

there was something stupid with xbl games though, like if you purchased it on your 360 with your live account and profile, you could NOT play them on a different 360 on your profile, if you weren't connected to xbox live online.

well yeah, stupid people will pay retail price for live. stupid people will also pay for 1 month or 3 month cards, 12 or 4 times a year, rather than paying for 1 year at once. just like stupid people would think they are getting a deal on a $99 360 then having to pay $15/mo for live for 2 years.

Right. There are methods though that could be used to prevent people from getting a $300 720 or whatever it will be called and not paying the two years for live. That's all I am saying.

As for paying as you go, some people play one game on xbl for a month then never use it. For them I think offering 3 month cards, while no deal over the course of a year, is a good idea.

You are only paying $79 more than you would if you paid for the console and the Xbox Live @ $40 per year. ($300 + $40 x 2). That isn't a terrible deal considering if you put the $380 on a credit card and paid it over 2 years, you'd end up paying more. I am not saying it is what everyone should do, but for people who can't afford the initial lump sum, it isn't the rape that would happen if a bank or credit card company did this.

All content purchased on the XBOX Live Marketplace is limited to the console that you purchased it on or the XBOX Live account that purchased it. So, to use the content, you either need to be on the console that purchased it or online with the account that purchased it.

When I was going to buy some games during the XBOX Live Marketplace sale a few months back, I went back and forth deciding which 360 on which I would purchase the items. Is this where I say "#firstworldproblems"?

That's why I asked about how you could fulfill the 2-year agreement. A friend purchased a 360 and decided to do that since he was already paying for XBOX Live Gold. I told him that I only pay $35 for 12 months at a time, and this emoticon pretty much sums up his expression: D:

yeah i'm not sure how they enforce it, but on the website it says there are ETF's and stuff. like if you stop paying, i wonder if they have a repo man come get their 360 back lol.

a little more information with terms on this page here.

i also did not realize it was with the $300 version of the 360. i had thought it was the $200 version. so yea it really isn't THAT bad of a deal if you can't afford to chuck up the money all at once.

Yeah, I did the pre-tax math above and it is really only an $80 difference over 2 years (assuming you pay $40 a year for XBL).

Note that with the current "discounted with subscription" deals for 360s, you pay $15 per month for Live, for 2 years, not ~$40 per year.

So you'll pay $360 vs. ~$80 for Live to get that $200 discount.

It's even worse than that depending on the point of view. I've been riding the 2 months of gold for $2 deal on cheapassgamer for about half a year now. Whenever it runs out, I use it again. At the half way mark now it doesn't appear to be a short run promotion, so one could potentially pay $12 a year. For a dollar a month, gold is far more reliable and valuable for my money than PSN. I also don't have to worry so much over my data being hacked due to low budget cut rate support and security. You get what you pay for.

This argument doesn't work when you cannot provide evidence of anyone being financially impacted. Xbox live has had its own issues too.

Well seeing as the average person can't get in that promotion, we have to pay a lot more for it.

I missed Forza Horizon, so I am looking forward to the next installment. I wouldn't even really consider myself a car enthusiast, but I still really enjoy the whole process of Forza games.

I don't see myself buying Ryse at all. I am excited for a new Forza. I played the hell out of 3 but got burnt out, so I skipped 4. I have thought about getting it but figured I would wait and see if they planned on coming out with 5 on the new system.

Crap, I hope that part about switching to currency instead of points isn't true. The best thing about points is being able to get them at a discount.

PSN 100% free alternative to Xbox Live. And before you say "omg I'd have to purchase a new console" you knew well in advance of buying an Xbox you would have to pay for Xbox Live for access the multiplayer options in games.

With 75 million Xbox 360s and 70 million PS3s sold, I'd say there is probably quite a bit of overlap. And 30 million of those people choose to pay for Xbox Live. Sorry, but that is all that matters. If it isn't a value to you, don't pay for it. Fine. But to claim it has no value worth paying for is stupid considering plenty of people find value in it worth paying for.

PSN offers cross game chat? Party chat? ESPN3? WWE PPVs? UFC? Last.fm? Seems like quite a lot of extras I wouldn't mind using for a measly $4 a month.

You know there are more PS3s in the world than 360s right?

I'll wait until e3 to decided what I'll get. I've had ps3 and for the very few times I play online I've been very happy with the system. I'll most likely pay with a credit card since I haven't used one in a while. Last time I didn't use it they closed the card lol.

I just hope the ps4 has some nice features. Sounded pretty neat that the Xbox will be able to act like a cable box. I wonder if that will just be for its own apps and content which I am guessing would be the case.

Proprietary currency ALWAYS sucks. You're always left over with certain amounts which is money you can't use.
