I can use my Xbox 360 as a Set Top Box w/Uverse without the need of a set top box
No I mean like a stand alone tivo box worked before.
Think of the chain like this... RG-6 to cable box > HDMI to XB1 > HDMI to Receiver/TV. What I read they want to be able to offer is the ability for the XB1 to record TV from the cable box, and offer full DVR services. You will still need the box though, but it would offer the proper interface to allow recording of live TV.
Since most cable and satellite providers charge extra for DVR service and a rental fee for the actual DVR box, they would be hesitant to give up control to a 3rd party.
Ideally they'd push TV through RJ-45 cables and you'd just use the XB1. I'm not sure how each TV service works though. I'm really only familiar with Dish/DirecTV/Comcast
From what I have heard once the major cable companies start rolling out nationwide IPTV you will be able to stream your entire channel lineup to the X-Bone, much like Comcast has their On-Demand portfolio streamable to the 360 now. This is why MS has been in negotiations with the cable companies about subsidizing it. It's certanly possible that they may let you record the IPTV stream to the X-Bone hard drive...
I don't even care about the TV side, but it's an interesting topic since RoboChobo asked about DVR.
The DVR is can be done in software, so I'd imagine if IPTV actually takes off, the Xbox One will get a very quick DVR patch. If it allows you to get out of the equipment rental fees for the cable boxes, I can see that being a big selling point for average consumers. Netflix, Blu-Ray, and a DVR would snag a lot of people. The PS2 had that because it offered a DVD drive. And the PS3 was literally the only Blu-Ray player under $600 when it came out.
I bet the TV provider will need to activate your XB1 and charge you a fee anyway lol. They are all about fees.
I am sure there will be an activation fee. Probably a convenience fee too.
And no doubt require XBL gold to function.
The whole console pretty much requires XBL gold anyway, so everyone will have it.
You sure? You don't even need to go online anymore
Snark much? When I refreshed the thread it skipped over the posts from the last one I had read the the end of the thread without me noticing. No need to be a douche... If you look at the join date I've been here over half a decade longer than you...
While it's sad to see some of the features go, this will practically shut up all the haters that talked about MS being arrogant and not caring about fans. This was a very quick response to calm down a lot of people.
This is a win for consumer rights.
I think MS was going to ride it out despite all the negativity with the gamers, but when Sony was able to walk all over them without having to do anything then the mainstream press started picking up on it, and then with preorders lagging they had to step back and rethink their strategy. They are only doing it because it was going to hurt their wallet.
I am happy about this. It shows that people can make a difference and even the biggest companies need to listen even if they don't want too. I still have negative feelings about the situation but it is mixed with positive and some hope. On the negative side, we've seen MS's hand now and what they want to do and will move too, on the positive it shows that they will bend to consumers. The hope is that they learn from this and when next gen (X2) is coming out their policies are consumer friendly and they don't try and pull some kind of stunts like they did in the past couple of months.
They still have other issues they will have to contend with, but they at least removed 2 major ones. While I can not say I will purchase an X1, I can say there is at least a chance I would purchase one now whereas before there was not a chance of ever owning one. If you are curious my main reasons for not purchasing one are there are not MS exclusives I care about currently, Kinect, *if* Live Gold is still plastered with ads (if it is like it has been, ugh, I don't like paying for a service and getting ads that take up so much space, but that is another topic all together), and being burned on the 360 (RROD). The last one is the easiest to resolve and will find out over time if they turn that around.
This is good though. We need competition and the way it was looking this was going to be a good old fashion slaughter and no one wins when the one on top doesn't have to fight to keep it.
Holy crap major surprise there. Customers and Sony just forced a major move on ms. Makes me want to think more about getting one a little...
While I would love to believe that this was about listening to the fans, I'm sure it had more to do with lost revenue potential. Don't be fooled, both MS and Sony are in it for the $$, not to make us happy.
Yup, it's great for all of us games that MS got destroyed over this. The two resident fanboys that defended MS in every post and every thread should thank all the people they battled with. The outcry and condemnation spread to poor preorder sales and widespread media attention on some pretty poor policies that now even MS agrees weren't all that thought out. The XBone product was made infinitely better despite the slobbering of the fanboys due to this criticism. Good day for gamers all around to see DRM fail before it even got out of the gates. (I'd also be curious if the EU's laws in regards to reselling software licenses has something to do with it.)
I'd love to see a video of that douchebag's response on this policy shift that stated MS's offline content for people was getting a 360.
