This. All of the statistically insignificant hypothetical situations where one may not be able to play his Xbox are absurd.

What's absurd is the extrapolation of your experience in an attempt to redefine reality.

And again, it's not just about having to check in and not having internet available. It's about what happens down the road when MS decides they want a new round of funding, so they shut down access to the hundreds of millions of games in circulation and force everyone to buy XBOX TWO.

Stop being so short-sighted.

Ah, I understand. That makes a little more sense. I understand the benefit of persistence for multiplayer, but some of this discussion of calculating real time data like calculating nearby trees in the cloud seems ridiculous, since that data gets fed right to the GPU. If they can prove me wrong, more power to 'em.

People that claim the cloud can be used to render are delusional. But, it can be used to do something like map out where random things should be on a map and just pass the reference points for the GPU to load. It would work well for things that are statically rendered, but dynamically based on some other input. It really just comes down to what the developers can imagine doing that doesn't have to be real time and can "lag" a bit.

Very bad report to use, since you have no clue how many people w/o a PC have a console (or instead of). Not uncommon at all. I know plenty w/o internet or computers but have consoles. I know that is sometimes hard to get your head around from us obsessive AT forum people

There are still plenty of people who simply have a phone and no internet, and many combinations thereof.

Worthwhile point but from the source article
"Overall, 0.6% of households have an iPad, tablet computer, or video-capable eReader, but do not use a laptop or desktop at home."

I would suggest that actually rate of people without some sort of computer and no internet availability and also own a console and not one of above is a pretty limited number. OECD.org suggests 68.4% peneration in the US, but its a year old.

Either way it's going to fall short of a 'large majority'

New rumor, hot off the press:

http://www.examiner.com/article/rum...inect-requirement-without-xbox-one-price-drop

A Microsoft employee responded to a question regarding the Kinect attachment, saying it will not be required to be connected in order for the system to function.

The article title is misleading; there's no need to mention a price drop unless they're considering not bundling the Kinect anymore, which doesn't appear to be the case. You'll still get a Kinect whether you want it or not, you just won't be required to have it hooked up.

I sort of felt like it was possible it was like this all along, but the MS exec who was initially quoted as saying the system won't work without the Kinect likely had no idea what he was talking about, or was confused by the very concept of someone not wanting it hooked up all the time. Obviously, Kinect functions won't work without Kinect, but IMO, Kinect brings very little to the table. I have zero desire for voice and gesture control when buttons are faster and more precise.

You know, in a previous post I thought ImpulsE had actually said "large minority" but I was wrong. I'd agree with you that the Xbox One's former online requirement would not affect a large majority of people, but would in fact be inconvenient for a large minority. It's not a ton of people but to just brush them off is insulting. Anyone without internet, anyone who doesn't have wifi and also doesn't have an ethernet network, anyone outside of certain countries, most troops... that's not a majority of people but it is still significant.

Why is this a uniquely Microsoft problem?

What I think people are missing is that even if the system isn't always online, most games will "require" online in that not being online gives you a rather gimped experience. Call of Duty does not sell 25 million units a year because it has such an awesome single player experience. And I really wonder how many people play Call of Duty local multi-player with a split screen mode. Does it even have a split screen mode?

Was bad wording because the "majority" was in reference to the people who had issues with the 24 hour check. I do believe there are many more people lacking internet than get credit because most people in the US only think about the US, which just isn't the case.

Either it changed already, or I'm not reading it the same as you.

When I click the article, a large picture of Robin Thicke comes up and so I closed it without reading. Full page ads... Really? I guess I should install noScript at work.

Well, I caved and just pre-ordered an XB1 today. I'm not on the day one list but I'll get one in the second shipment.

Also sold my Wiiu to someone who wanted it which is the reason I went to pre-order an XB1 in the first place. I'll buy another Wiiu sometime later on i'm sure.

It does look like they changed it.

This whole thing is confusing. First of all you have people pestering them about the possibility of not including the Kinect in order to get a lower price, which I believe has a 0% chance of happening. Every Xbox One WILL ship with Kinect.

And all the official material still does not DIRECTLY answer the question of whether you will be able to use the console (minus Kinect functions) if the Kinect isn't hooked up. At this point, MS should really just come out and say yes or no, but all they have said so far is:

1. Every Xbox One will ship with a Kinect
2. There will be privacy settings and it won't record you ("trust us, really")
3. Having the Kinect hooked up allows for a better user experience

They refuse to say yes or no. Maybe they want people to think it is required even if it is not. It's in their best interest for everyone to have their Kinect hooked up at all times, and they probably don't want to even hint at the possibility that one could enjoy an Xbox One without the Kinect.

lol...sucker for what? Cause I don't play the Wiiu and might actually get use out of Forza and stuff?

Yep. You are a sucker because you aren't letting Lord Sony into you're heart and are instead making a decision to buy the false idol's product because you might enjoy a game or two on it.

I'm kidding. W/O all that other crap the Xbone is probably a better bet than the Wii U (which is sad). There is one game on the Wii U I am interested in it's the new "X" game (Xenogears/etc makers), but that's assuming it comes out in the US.

I didn't say it's a uniquely Microsoft problem. Origin or Steam could do the same. And many people dislike those services for exactly the same reason.

And don't push your patterns on everyone. You don't speak for anybody but yourself. I don't give two shits about what CoD does. I haven't played a CoD game in years because I'm tired of regurgitated crap. There are many, many great games which would be great even without an online requirement. In fact with some games *cough*SimCity*cough* it seems like they shoehorned in online features that nobody wanted just to have an excuse to tie people to their crappy online DRM schemes.

If you want a dedicated online CoD box, then bully for you. Not everybody wants that.

Meh. If you're the least bit interested its worthwhile to put in a pre-order at amazon. Costs you nothing and you can always cancel if you change your mind. At the very least it allows you to see how things play out and get a console before the holidays if you decide you want it. I have a xb1 and 5 ps4's pre-ordered ATM.

There is a considerable difference between a game that requires online and a console that requires online to play everything.

I actually was called by my friend and told its a day one edition. So I have forza, an extra controller, and will get KI at release.

All it took was for MS to drop the DRM stuff for me. If I change my mind its no problem to refund too so no loss either way.

I am sad though. I very much liked the wiiu and I was seriously hopeful for it. I'll just rebuy it later when the price is cheaper.

Ps4 will still be my main console of choice I just won't need to be left out or miss out on a couple games I will get some use out of, which is good. I am excited for both consoles. After Microsoft's about face anyway.

Lol I hate what MS tried to do but I don't hate the Xbox itself. I went to the original Xbox retail conference and played halo and their other games on dev units. I was an Xbox live beta tester as well. So I do support the Xbox brand. I just happen to like Sony's console a bit more which isn't bad. Consumer choice is good.

I just received an e-mail from Amazon about my X1 pre-order:

We have good news! One of your pre-ordered items is now eligible for release date delivery and has been upgraded at no additional charge. Your new delivery estimate is:

"Xbox One Console - Day One Edition"
Estimated arrival date: November 27, 2013

That's the day before Thanksgiving, which would match up with the theory that the consoles will probably be out before Black Friday. This is rather close, but it works.

I'm hoping Sony comes out sooner. That leaked image is for Germany. So my guess is a week before that in the U.S. and watch dogs comes november 19 so I'll probably only be able to get knack at launch.
