Yeah the limitation is because its uploading to the cloud. I still don't get why the gameplay record/upload is such a crux of both Sony and Microsoft. I also wonder how much it might impact online gameplay experience (remember upload speeds are much lower so if its trying to constantly ding 720@30fps to the cloud it could become an issue).

But then I don't understand the Let's Play stuff either. Only thing I can think of is that its good way of testing/preparing for cloud gaming but they seem so focused on this. Not that its that surprising I guess as its another social aspect they can push along with other social media.

If Microsoft was smart they'd sell "developer licenses" for cheap (like $100) that enabled the system to DVR footage at full resolution and framerate and let the user edit it, as well as some other features (like the ability to do the developer stuff, and run unsigned code).

A confirmed Xbox One Developer did an AMA a few weeks back and this is what he had to say about the Kinect:

http://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/1i71s5/i_am_an_xbox_one_dev_ask_me_almost_anything/
Looks like they put a lot of money into the new Kinect.

Yeah, I don't think the costs are anything like people think they are and why I think Microsoft is hedging its bets way too much on Kinect.

I think Sony could launch at $299 and still make money, and likewise, Microsoft could go lower in price but they've got strange ideas for market pricing (see Surface).

That's really hard to believe that the Kinect 2 cost almost as much to make the console, unless the R&D on it is so tremendously high. It seems to me that they had such a solid base with the first that adding on higher-res sensors and increased tracking fidelity would be slightly more than trivial. I say this without knowing anything about anything and I'm obviously wrong.

Well they basically cut out the company that made the original Kinect, so its possible they're factoring in the costs to buy/license the IP or develop their own iteration of it.

One interesting thing I saw about how the controller will pair up with the kinect sounds interesting.

Sony can accomplish the same, it wouldn't be difficult at all to achieve that with something a lot simpler. I also still don't really understand why that seems like such an appealing feature to people as you'll still be dependent on logging in with your account to get it to really matter in any meaningful way. Unless Microsoft is going to be saving various information in the cloud that will allow any Xbox One to auto log you in based on your appearance, which frankly would be pretty startling and scary.

Er, oops that really wasn't that much about that little feature (the auto adjust split screen, although I don't know that splitscreen is that much of a focus so I think that's not that big of a deal), but there was talk about the auto-know feature where Kinect will identify people and adjust settings automatically for them.

I don't think Sony could go any lower than $399. The parts in that console aren't cheap and from the articles I've seen, the only reason they were able to get the console to the $399 price point was by dropping the new eyetoy at the last minute.

I am talking about the controller syncing through infrared to both the system and kinect. No more press button to search for controller, press button on controller to open up syncing then hope they find each other. It is now seamless and instant on any system you point a controller at.

I wonder how it desyncs. I know there is a problem with wireless controllers at tournaments. EVO used to have desyncing stations before they just banned wireless controllers outright.

Maybe it doesn't have to. I know the controller has a low power state. Maybe when this happens the controller is effectively not synced? I really dunno.

BF4 beta unavailable in Asian regions on PS3 / PS4. Xbox 360 and PC only. Wonder if MS had anything to do with this?

Although...is Russia considered asia? Isn't BF3 and other shooters really popular over there?

I don't think Russia is considered part of Asia, but I am not sure. Australia is another I don't know about as well. The announcement said "Asia, including Japan and Korea, will only be able to access the BF4 beta through Xbox 360 and PC" or something similar to that.

And considering how poorly the 360 did in Asia (Japan in general was a failure), this COULD be to entice avid BF fans into picking up a 360 to beta test. I doubt it will work, as I believe Asia is rather disinterested in the BF series in general.

Although I will probably be paying for Live, this console is pretty much gimped without it. All the new features require Gold at some capacity it seems.

Actually, MS just announced pretty much all the great new features will required Xbox One.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/07/xbox-one-xbox-live-gold/

Something I am looking forward to is the NFL on Xbox. If I can actually watch games, I am done with DirecTV. I only have it for the NFL Sunday Ticket.

i was referring to the "gimped console" part. it's been no secret with MS from xbox (original ones) that if you want to take advantage of the online aspect of the console, that you will most likely want to have xbox live. it's the same with the 360, and now the same with the x1.

neither the xbox or 360 were "gimped consoles".

Not gimped if you subscribe to the full paid Live subscription.

Somewhat gimped otherwise. Of course Sony is following suit this gen as well with PS4 online play requiring PS+ paid sub. The only real difference is free Netflix/FreeToPlay on PS4, which is sort of meh.

Thank GOD MS fixed the offline play option though, or otherwise things would have been horrendously gimped for everyone without great internet (hello active duty/deployed soldiers, people on remote job sites/people in the boonies/etc).

All in all I think both will shape up to be outstanding products.

There is no such thing as a 4k compatible HDMI cable. Any HDMI cable that is 1.4a certified can handle 4k but only at 30hz refresh. HDMI 2.0 will bring 60hz 4k support but neither console will have it since it is not standardized yet unfortunately.

I am wondering if they have an early version of the 2.0 spec and are using that? That wouldn't be unheard of.

Can't watch the video at worth, so I don't know exactly what he said.

both consoles do

If the Xbox One comes with a headset, how are they going to force me to use the Kinect to talk to people and record everything for the NSA? Snowden must have notified MS of his impending leaks and they backtracked on openly spying. They only secretly spy on us now.

He says "4k rated HDMI cable".

Surprised it has a headset in the box too. I like the packaging, pretty slick. Also disappointed in the power brick but maybe it will help keep the thing cooler and quieter or something.
