Sorry to mess up the "perfect" number, but it looks like there was quite a little discussion in this thread.... Sorry I missed out on it.
I don't believe I ever suggested that the Pledge or saluting the flag should be mandatory. I don't think it should. Making an outward expression of the respect I have for my country and what it stands for simply makes me feel more a part of it. Obviously, not everyone feels that way.
But what it all boils down to is this. There is a serious dearth of common respect in this country (at all age levels). I happen to respect the people and institutions that gave me the rights and priviledges I am allowed to exercise in the US. I've been to MANY other countries. Most Americans just simply have no idea, no concept... I'm sorry.... it's very hard to explain.
Do I love my country? Yes. Do I love everything that happens, or is done here. Well, of course not. That's why I take every chance I am given to try and make it just a little better.
As far as the POA and saluting the flag.... Hey, I respect your right to choose NOT to say the pledge and to decline to salute the flag. But do me a favor. Would you please simply have the common decency and respect to do the following for me:
1) Allow MY children the same choices. Let my sons choose whether or not to pledge their allegiance to their country and salute their flag each morning as a reminder that there are millions of folks working and fighting everyday to maintain their rights and priviledges. If they're working and fighting everyday for US, can't we take 30 seconds and show them that we know about, care about, and respect their efforts.
2) If you choose not to Pledge or salute, that's your choice, and I'll fight and die to protect that right, but out of respect for the country and for those who would choose differently from you, don't impose your choices on me and mine, OK.
3) And finally, if you find yourself in the position where a flag is being raised or lowered, the Pledge is being recited, the Anthem or some other patriotic song is being sung, and you choose not to participate.... or worse, you think this country doesn't warrant your respect or outward expression of loyalty..... Could you please, out of a sense of personal respect for your fellow man, simply keep your mouth shut and stand still for just a minute while others express themselves? I promise, I will show the same respect for your ideas and beliefs as well.
I don't think this is too much to ask, but I may be wrong, since I am of course still...
