The Pledge of Allegiance

My wanting or not wanting to say the pledge has no bearing on what respect I have for people who have chosen to serve in the military. You are accusing people of being unpatriotic and attacking them for exercising one of the most precious rights, that we have: that of free speech and expression.

That speech attempts to link two ideas, where no such link should exist. Personally, I find the ?with us or against us? mentality that seeps from it to be far more dangerous to our freedom than any other sentiment expressed in this thread.

He went through vietnam, and a POW camp, never does he complain, flip out or make an issue out of it. He took it all in stride and is now living his life back in America.

Another thing I'm sick of is this ideal you hold that I should praise soldiers. Not a single damned soldier has fought for MY and AMERICAS rights since the revolutionary war, or mabey the civil war. None of thoes soldiers in vietnam were fighting for MY RIGHTS OR FREEDOMS! They were over there fighting for vietnamese freedom. In the end they failed in their mission.

The same goes for all contemporary wars, including the world wars. America has been fighting for the rights of others, not its own. There havn't been any wars on American soil, there have been no wars that directly threaten our rights and freedoms, ever.
So I don't need to hear all the time how I need to praise soldiers for keeping my country and freedoms safe, because that's pure bullsh!t.

The flag is just symbol, dissing it does not mean I diss the country. It's sickening that you can get that hung up over a simple symbol. I have a problem with this line of thinking...

Try to think a little broader and your view may change.
Just because we are fighting over oil now, don't think that it isn't a battle to preserve our freedom or our way of life.
Freedom doesn't just continue to happen because we wish it.
It needs maintainence. If terrorism (God I hate that word, it so fvcking cliche now), communism, and any "unlike idealist culture" is allowed to thrive, the strength that culture gains threatens our freedom.
If a fire starts in your kitchen, do you put it out or do your just let it burn hoping it'll go away?
That's where we're at.
I think that a war is lost as soon as boots are laced up. We like to think we're all so high and mighty, but we're nothing more than savage animals who act on emotion.
It's what we are and it's what we do.
If you think freedom just keeps being because it makes you feel warm and cozy to think that, then enjoy the feeling. You can continue to do so because men much braver than myself are making sure of it. Many thousands of them are standing in Iraq while I exercise my freedom to type.

Don't think for a second that because a given war never made it to our home soild that our soldiers weren't fighting for our rights in previous wars.
