Alright, I'm a little OCD and that useless Outlook icon that pops up whenever its running is killing me. How do I get rid of the little ah heck for the 2003 version, and I don't mean using that ridiculous 'Hide inactive icons' property of the toolbar?

Right click the icon in the tray and uncheck what you don't want. I think you are talking about Mail Desktop Alert.

While Outlook is running, Right click on Start, select Properties, On the Taskbar Tab select the Customize button. Find Microsoft Outlook and select "Always Hide".

Other than using the "Always Hide" option, I don't know of a way to do it. I went through all of Outlook 2003's option today at work and didn't see anything that would let you disable the system tray icon.

You mean the envelope that appears when you get new mail?

I still have that in Outlook 2003. Had it in Outlook XP (2002) also.

Some of us have multiple email accounts, including gmail, and it's nice to have one mail program check them all at once.

I have multiple email accounts and can set aside a few minutes at least once a week to check them individually rather than rely on an M$ program, with a new security flaw found at least twice as often, to do it for me. I really thought Outlook died for the tech crowd with hotmail, much less gmail. I honestly didn't realize anyone except Sister Spyware and Aunt Adware still used Outlook and such

Gmail can't connect to our Exchange server at work.

gmail, hotmail and yahoo mail (and probably others that I haven't used) are blocked at work.

Mainly so that people can't harm their computers and cause us (the IT staff) more work.

I use outlook mainly because I don't like using hotmail/gmail through a browser and because I can check multiple hotmail and gmail accounts with one program, instead of logging in and out for each account. I've been using Outlook and Outlook Express for the past 8 years to check my e-mail and I've never gotten spyware, adware or a virus through it.

Hmm... maybe my workplace admin has the option disabled it by default. All this while I thought they'd replaced it with that popup tray message. Silly me, can't believe I've been putting up without that envelope for years now. :disgust:
