I'm not surprised.
Here's my theory on why nobody else has reported the issue...
The smart builders avoided SLI entirely. And most of those who bought SLI just wanted to join the "Cool Tech" band wagon even though they had no idea what they were buying. So they're clueless.

And then there are advetures like yourself who tested the technology for the rest of us.
oh please, thats not why all of us bought into SLI. I like the expandablity, I can rock a 6800 BFG GT for a year or 2, and when my video starts becoming eak to the newest games, I can buy another BFG 6800 (which is now 1-2 yrs later, and on the serious LOW LOW) and boost myself right up to good fps again.

it is a great expandablity option.... thats the reason....

and i only bought one card,i didnt buy 2, so if i decide to go ATI, i can dump; this one, and get one of those....

Rriiight... Because the officially released drviers work so well to. Yup, they're crashing just like the Beta stuff. None of us would be exploring w/ the Beta drivers if the officially released drivers worked.

I like the web camera idea. Know where I can find the link

If official and beta drivers are causing problems. Ever thought maybe something other than drivers is the problem? When you try multiple drivers and have problems it isn't the drivers.
Make sure you got enough power. According to the Anandtech article 6600GT SLI under load uses 244W and the ultra uses 329W.

Unless it's a problem that exists in all the drivers you tried.

Do you guys even know what vsync does. Geese

Turn it off. Like your monitor vertical refresh = your videocards framerate. Turn it off unless your running a CRT running at 120+Hz Vertical Refresh. And if your having trouble with SLI then.

Goto www.3dchipset.com and download the new nforce and video drivers . Also you can download the SLI profiler and custom set all of your games.

My system rocks!!

I am at an absolute loss to undersand why anyone would want to have Vsync turned on? I know there must be some situation, but don't know what it is? Tearing hasn't been an issue for a long time has it?

Doctor, it hurts when I raise my arm up like this....

Then don't raise your arm like that!

It is when vsync isn't enabled. Duh.

Guys, if you like the way this looks, just leave vsync OFF

http://www.denverrsx.com/images/crap.jpg

This happens on CRT, LCDs and DLPs. But like refresh rate, some people 'can't see it'. Good for them, bad for those of us with eyes.

BTW: It looks really bad on a 50" wide 16x9 HDTV.

But hey, I'm only complaining about quality. The FPS go really FAST - ye-haw!

I use Vsync when tearing occurs a lot in a certain game I play. For instance, I play UT2004 and it doesn't tear much if not at all. But when I play an older game like Red Faction, I get a lot of tearing when I move the mouse too quickly. So, I turn Vsync on in those situations.

Lol, yah, this is true. I never noticed tearing with my CRT before, but now that I have my LCD I see it and find that vsync is a wonderful thing. Funny thing is, now that I know what to look for, I see it all the time on my CRT. Not sure how I every played without it...

Thank you for answering my why no Vsync questions. I am up to "I sort of understand"

There still are a couple things that are escaping me.

  • The largest question that I have is with such a concern for display quality, especially in gaming situations, why in the world are those concerned using an LCD display?
  • With older games referenced which lead to tearing issues, how is this a hardware issue? Isn't it clear this is an issue of software with the 'older games'?
  • With frame rates and display quality being of paramount importance, why is a monitor that can't display high frame rates being used?
  • Why not just set max. framerate to an intermediate limit within the game rather than totally cripple your display with Vsync?

It was an issue for me in D3. The first game I really noticed it on. W/o vsync I got a ripple effect when turning etc. in the game.

Ya got me. I'm one of the weenie's that did the whole 2 6800GT SLI thing, and I'm SO regretting it now. I presume they'll fix some of this down the road, but it's not worth it.

yes, they are. theyre also closer to deciding that their userbase will be too stupid to use their system correctly. I dont think you realize this: 1. vsync is designed to limit the fps, no matter what (ok, i think you got THAT much.) That means that with vsync enabled, assumin your hardware can hit the limit, ANY card will give you the same thing. be it a 66GT that can get up to 40, or a 68 that can hit 90. (i think you MIGHT have gotten that much too) Alright, next point. I have never personally had my fps, in ANY game, go past 32 with vsync enabled, usually 30. NEXT point. Tearing is caused exclusively by your monitor being unable to physically keep up with the updated frame rate. Think of it this way. if i can flash 50 flashcards in a minute, and someone hands me a stack of 90, i just cant flash those 90 in that minute, and ill have to catch up, probably by skipping some. The tear you see is that catching up. live with it, or get a monitor that is good enough for your graphics cards. which brings me to my next point. maybe you cant get a monitor that will. the speed of electronics DOES doubble ever 18 months, but thats not to say every manufacturer has the upgrade on that timescale either. I do believe pixel shader v.3.0 was out a good while ago, but cards of the time were physically unable to handle the demand it introduced. the programmers didnt get to see the bounty of their creation until the new wave was out. This means, sli can physically hit frigging astronomical fps, but your monitor probably cant.

all in all, its not really sli's screw up, its yours.

also, this isnt really solarflare, its his friend, so dont bother banning him.

I actually am Getting the MSI ATI Express 200, because its the only micro otx board O've found, that also has PCI-E, and is Socket 939. Since Im getting an Aria case, I need a Matx, but PCI_E Shuttles are to expensive ($500, cheapest ove found) whcih isnt worth it for a case, PSU and mobo.

2x6800GT's here and perfectly happy. Only downside is that I cant use my TV-out without restarting but that is all. With new drivers (71.83) my cards are doing very well.
