The paint contains an aluminium-iron oxide which resonates at the same frequency as wi-fi - or other radio waves - meaning the airborne data is absorbed and blocked. By coating an entire room, signals can't get in and, crucially, can't get out.

Eat that security conscious, 128-bit crazy passkey creating, tin foil hat wearing... actually I'll stop there, because this is just a giant tin foil hat... that actually works

This will never get used in movie theaters. The first time someone dies because firemen or a surgeon couldn't be contacted, there will be big lawsuits and it'll get banned in movie theaters. Sure, you could give your phone to an employee of the theater so they can notify you if it rings, but then they're going to charge you even more to see movies.

But what if I just want to keep my home network in MY home? Or an office network? True, movie theaters are out... but how about schools? They say emergencies... but back in my day, the front office handled emergencies JUST fine.

So, what you're saying is that schools should never improve their ability to respond to emergencies?

We barely did.

I HATE cellphones in theaters and I'm not sure I would want this in theaters. I could imagine all the idiots still trying to text/use their phones anyway. I haven't heard a ringer go off in ages but I do see those bright screens from people texting / surfing the web / using apps.

Imho, the detriments of cell phone usage in the classroom (K-12) exceed the potential benefits of direct 'emergency lines' to students. I'm all for schools "improv[ing] their ability to respond to emergencies", but don't see the correlation to students having cell phones. Please cite sources.

Doesn't matter, the law is set in most places that students can have cell phones. You can think a few school shootings for that one.

Ah yes, school shootings... 'So' should thx you for citing a source. Still, why is this convo all about schools and movie theaters and not about WiFi security! The article doesn't even talk about cellular communication, it is specific to WiFi signals!

Edit: Actually, yeah it does talk about movie theathers and cell phones and cost effectiveness... but yeah, I still want to live in my tin foil hat, and I still don't want to have to type in your ridiculously long randomly generated alphanumeric passphrase...

Remember back in the day, when classrooms actually had wall mounted telephones in them?? Just as good as any cell phone, even better after a natural disaster, imho.

They could theoretically block any signal frequency, or even any combination of signal frequencies. They just have to create substances that resonate at the frequency they want to block.

The ability to block or limit by service exists. Say in a theater if cell phones were a problem services could be limited to outgoing 911 only, no incoming calls or texts, etc.

In an emergency situation the restrictions could be immediately lifted.

microwave RF is pretty good at sneaking out cracks and such, better have the doors taped shut with foil too.

I was thinking that too.

Radio waves cant permeate windows? youd have to paint everything to completely block the signal.

lol, so people would rather spend money on "anti-wifi" paint, instead of just RTFM and using more than the usual part of their brain? pathetic..security is already available..this is just plain lazy.

So can I sue the people who made the parking garage since all cell phone signals are blocked in there.

How about when I'm in an underground terminal of the metro?

As long as the movie theatre informs people upon entering they are off the hook. Is it a good idea? Probably not but not because they are liable but because it is likely to drive away more business than it will bring it.
