Eurogamer's digital foundry did a performance review for patch 1.07 on the consoles, and it ain't pretty.

I guess we're lucky to be playing this amazing game on PC in all it's glory, as the consoles are clearly struggling with this game. CDPR should just bite the bullet and do what DICE and Ubisoft did, lower the resolution for the consoles.

So that would put the PS4 version at 900p and the Xbox One at 720p and free up some resources..

I feel sorry for CDPR and other devs. These current gen consoles are just too damn weak to handle massive, ambitious open world titles like the Witcher 3..

ok...but the game plays fine on a PS4. I've tried it. No it isn't 60fps but it looks damn good and feels fine when compared to other games also on the system.

I've tried to stop comparing games between PC and console. I know a PC is more powerful there's no point trying to reinforce this fact. I don't feel sorry for anyone. They all know what the consoles can and can't do it's up to the developer to balance the game the way they feel best. If I didn't have a computer capable of playing this or I just didn't want to bother, I'd be playing it on PS4 and wouldn't care about what the PC has because for me it's about the game I'm playing and not the platform. I guess I'm wondering why you had to make a post about it.

The PC patch should be out by tomorrow at the latest. Apparently some PC specific issues required more fine tuning, which doesn't seem unreasonable given the fact that the PC platform is much more complex than the consoles given its open nature.

Yeah, PC is so much more complex than consoles, yet the games look and play extremely similar between the two. They're all more similar today than ever, seeing as how x86 is x86 is x86. I mean really, is there a point to this crap? There's already a thread here somewhere for PC elitists to make douche comparisons to consoles. Go stroke your PC ego there.

I'll be looking to get this game once 1.07 on PC goes live and people weigh-in. Is it better to buy this through Steam or a retail copy from Best Buy?

The game is DRM free and if you buy it retail you can link it through the GoG app for automatic updates etc. that's what I did.

GOG is swamped right now, had to manually download and install 1.07. Does seem to run a little faster now. With no hairworks and shadows on medium, everything else is maxed, running 60 fps inside and usually 60 outside, drops to 54 occasionally. Did have to re-equip some gear, so don't start a fight until you check. Storage works, only your gear has weight now. So working as advertised.

This is very true and gonna continue to be a problem as games continue to release broken and performing terribly and yet there are those even on this forum who will defend them to the death "but but but PS4 games look better than PS3 so it doesn't matter how weak you think they are"

How are you guys liking the new movement option for Geralt?

I bought it through GOG. Didn't feel like giving anyone else a cut. Probably isn't a good time to go through GOG though, they are swamped right now. Does depend on whether or not you have an on-line payment method that will work with GOG.

The alternate movement is better for me personally, its much more responsive when turning directions.

I guess I'm wondering why you had to make a post about it.

Well it certainly wasn't an attack on consoles despite what you may think..

It was more of an observation really. CDPR is literally caught between a rock and a hard place with the consoles when it comes to the Witcher 3.

Like Watch Dogs, the game was in development for years before the final specs of the PS4 and Xbox One became known. And when they finally found out, they had to scramble and adjust many of the assets and engine settings to fit the performance profile of the consoles.

But still, you don't want to sacrifice too much to the point where your vision for the game is compromised.. And that is where CDPR are caught between a rock and a hard place.

If they lower the resolution to 900p and 720p respectively, people are going to scream downgrade and create a massive furor. But if they haven't fixed the frame rates after this many patches via optimization, the issue isn't likely to ever be fixed I think..

My impressions of patch 1.07 so far is that it's a solid patch and definitely worth getting.

NPC pop in has definitely been improved, although there are some NPCs that still pop in too close to Geralt. These are the same problem NPCs that have always had latent pop in since the game's release, so it's nothing new. But it makes me wonder what's so different about these particular NPCs that makes them "materialize" slower than the others?

Regardless, it's not a big issue as those NPCs are few and far between. One thing I also noticed is that they improved the water shaders. The water looks better now with more complex refraction and distortion. However, the water tessellation bug is still there..

Also the annoying mutagen bonus issue has been fixed, so no more unequipping and equipping them.

Open world games are always CPU heavy simply because of all that AI and background processes hammering it (the "open" part). Same with GTA V, same with Novigrad in Witcher III. Guess where the next gen consoles suck? Poky tired tablet CPU. You want silky smooth 60FPS+ buy a 5820K and a 980 Ti both of which cost more than both consoles combined.

Better off with a 5960X with hyperthreading off instead of a 5820K since Witcher 3 runs on 8 discrete threads. Also it only really comes into play in Novigrad and areas with a lot of NPCs. In most areas of the game there wouldn't be much of a difference between a mid-end i5 and a 5960X.

Also Windows 7/8's running on DirectX 11.2 which is a bit CPU bound. Windows 10 Preview is currently about 10-12% faster due to it's more advanced DirectX 11.3 build.

I played at 40fps for a couple hours totally confused since I was running 60fps before 1.0.7 patch.

Then I figured it out.

Pre Patch-1.0.7: Borderless Windowed Mode would break SLI framepacing so it said 70fps but was a stuttery mess. If you turned on in-game vsync on borderless windowed mode however, you were locked at 40fps for whatever reason.

In full screen mode with SLI had screen tearing without in-game vsync but was smooth. With in-game vsync on it showed 60fps but was a stuttery mess.

So if you had a SLI setup, you ran full-screen mode with Vsync enabled in the Nvidia control panel. This was the only way to get smooth gameplay with no screen tearing.

Patch 1.0.7: Borderless Windowed is still a stuttery mess in SLI showing 70 fps. If you turn on Vsync on borderless windowed mode it now shows 60fps but is still a stuttery mess with broken frame pacing.

In fullscreen mode with Vsync enabled in the Nvidia control panel, you now are locked at 40fps. In fullscreen mode with in-game vsync it also shows 40fps. Both of these behave the same as pre-1.0.7's borderless windowed mode with in-game vsync.

You now must turn off in-game vsync, turn-off Nvidia control panel vsync, and run with a 60fps cap to get proper SLI frame pacing at a 60fps range of performance. I haven't checked to see if there is screen tearing below 50fps, but if there is, it looks like this patch basically broke SLI completely. You would no longer be able to have screen-tear free 60fps gameplay with SLI. Bleh. Gonna test some more tomorrow with higher settings to see if that is the case. If it is...I'm gonna try to find some way to roll-back to 1.0.6.

So now every time I do a save, the game tells me that the save is not compatible with earlier versions of the game. Is this normal? I assume it must be the latest patch. I certainly hope all my old saves are compatible with the new version.

And if anything, the performance on my iow end system seems even worse. I like the game a lot, but think I have to start devoting more time to the msin quest. The sidequests just go on and on and are starting to get repetitive.

Great the patch is here, now iam going to erase everything and reinstall this game. Do I need to install previous patches before installing 1.7?

Lots of games seem to have issues when they use framerate limiters. I just always turn them off, turn off vsync, and then rely on adaptive vsync in the control panel options.

It's not a tablet CPU, there's no Snapdragon or Exynos there

If true, how did this even get broken? None of the patch notes that I saw mentioned vsync adjustments at all.

It really doesn't matter because I don't give a shit about having a billion mile draw distance and doing pixel zooming to see how many jagged edges are on a crate that you can't interact with. That's stupid. I play the game and the only people I feel sorry for are the people who have to act superior to someone else based on the platform they like.

This is a false premise.

It has nothing to do with graphics. Games are being released broken and performing terribly because of these consoles. You apparently don't care while the rest of us want to see the situation improve.

It stopped giving me that message after two manual saves in the new version.

This patch has me a tad pissed in that I cant do a certain main quest now until level 18 because of new gear requirements, the quest makes you take off your chest piece only which mean I cant equip my enhanced Griffin gear back since two levels short.

The only false statament is the one you made. The games aren't broken because of consoles, if a game doesn't work it's the developer's fault. That's it. The Witcher worked fine from day one because the developer made sure. Batman? The developer didn't understand the PC very well and screwed up. It's not the platform, it it always the developer. You bitch and moan about consoles this and consoles that when you really should be directing any concerns to the developers and publishers of the games. Playstation and Xbox aren't responsible for 3rd party software. I don't understand why you think it's some conspiracy or difficult concept to grasp. Company A does the game right and it performs well with minor bugs (all games have bugs especially large games) on all platforms, Company B takes the quick and easy way and the game underperforms, has missing assets, settings don't function etc on PC while it seems to look and run fine on both the XB1 and the PS4. Who do you blame? If you say the console you're wrong plain and simple.

So you have the gear equipped even though you don't meet the requirements but if you remove it it will tell you that you don't meet the requirements and lock you out for 2 levels?

This has to be one of the most bonehead changes I've ever seen in a game. Between that and the SLI issues that the new patch seems to introduce they took a nearly flawless game in my eyes and ruined that image for me. I can't remember a time when a piece of gear had a level requirement change after people were already using it.
