Can someone explain Triss Merigold's behavior to me? There seems to be some disconnect between TW2 and TW3 (I carried over my save). TW2 spoilers:

What I remember from TW2 (which I only played about a week ago, but my memory is shot) is that she and Geralt were super friendly, and banged in that cave under the garden. Then she got abducted by that meathead witcher, and a good portion of the quest was trying to track her down. Then Geralt finally found her in the aftermath of the purge at that city and the game ended.

So why in TW3 is she acting all distant like she had fallen out with Geralt in some way?

For me, her character bio in the game indicates that she and Geralt broke up some 6 months prior to TW3, regardless of your choices in TW2 (I romanced her early in TW2, but then
chose to save Phillipa instead of Triss, so I could free Saskia
). The 6 months time frame would line up with about the time Geralt and Vesemir starting hunting for Yen. I would say the devs were wanting to set up Triss vs Yen tension for everyone in TW3.

So I just found meditation in this game. 1 hour of sleeping and you have full health and it replenishes all your alchemy crafted items if you have the right type of alcohol, really helps. I was burning through so much food prior to that.

Also, crafting new armor and items is essential, as is reading the bestiary to find out what enemies are weak to.

Will it make a big difference if I update my Nvidia driver? Still running the one they released for GTA5.
I think it will.

A month or two ago there was a post on forums by guy who used to work at nVidia as an intern. He explained some of the stuff that nVidia does when it "tweaks drivers". Basically they look at how game-developers have designed their engine. And then they try to correct all the mistakes, dumb design-decisions and bugs that are in that engine. They basically make their drivers behave differently for different games. That goes so far as that they sometimes completely rewrite shader-code from scratch. A game gets released with shader-code from the developer, the shader is in a file in your game folder. But when you play the game, a completely different shader gets run. I guess AMD does the same.

That's enough reason for me to install a new driver every time I start playing a new game that has just been released. It might also prevent crashes because of bugs that were exposed by those new games.

I also like to mess with settings in nVidia iNspector. Especially in old games, enabling 4xSGSSAA if I have high framerates. Or enable SSAO in games that don't support it natively. I think you need a profile for a game to do that. Those profiles come with new drivers. BTW, in TW3 you should enable 16xAF in nVidia iNspector or in the nVidia control panel. Because the game does only 8xAF.

There is one thing to keep in mind. A new driver could have new bugs too. No problem, you can always downgrade. There are people who report crashes with the new driver, and a downgrade fixed it for them. No idea why. My TW3 has not crashed even a single time. (i5-3570K@4GHz, gtx680, 8GB ram, Win7). But in general, this is the reason why I only upgrade drivers when I start playing a new game. Not every time a new driver is released.

I like eating the food. It seems we find plenty of food anyway. I just wish there was a way to cook the raw meat. Going into meditation every 5 minutes doesn't feel right, from a role-playing perspective.

Also, crafting new armor and items is essential, as is reading the bestiary to find out what enemies are weak to.
I played TW1 a few weeks ago. One of my main priorities was to find or buy books with entries for the bestiary. Those entries tell you how to plan your strategy. (Vulnerable to igni or aard or another sign. Vulnerable during the day or at night, where to find, vulnerable to some special action, etc).

But I think just having that entry in your glossary also just plainly increases your damage to those monsters ! Like you get a +50% damage modifier ! Some monsters were pretty tough, but once I get a bestiary entry, I would cut through them like it was nothing. Once I found out, I didn't mind spending a few hunderd gold on books from book-sellers. I could be mistaken, and it all could be imaginary. Maybe someone else knows for sure ? Also, I have no idea if it works like that in TW3 too. I'm not very far in the game yet.

Only on the easy and medium difficulty it will restore your health so if you do decide to go to a higher difficulty, its just something to be aware of.

For the potions, yes as long as you have an Alcholest(think thats the right spelling), it will refill your potions. Now the thing I have not test is

1 - does 1 alcholest refill all potitons
or
2 - 1 alcholest for each potion it refill, for example if i am out of 3 swallows will it take 3 alcholests?

There are other alcohols besides alcholest that will work, and one of them restores all of your consumables (potions + bombs).

1 alcohest refills everything to full that you currently have in your inventory that is an alchemy product--including bombs.

New patch today, 1.04. Beware that, for me at least, it reset my key bindings and changed the texture quality to low.

I no longer have a beard in cut scenes and afterwards I need to turn hair works off and on again for it to come back. Annoying.

It set my textures from high to low. I'm still too low level to even kill that graveyard hag. Only level five so far. Wondering if I should just continue the main story as I'm not even going anywhere. Seems I suck at this, any quest I try I fail or either my armor or weapons become damaged in the middle of a fight. I did come across letho and got about 50xp for those quests.

Yeah just keep working on the main quest. Or run around and explore points of interest on the map. You should pretty much always repair everything when you pass a blacksmith, and be sure to keep at least 1-2 armor and weapon repair kits on hand all the time.

I've felt like I've explored a lot already and its either monster nests or foes I can't beat yet. Where do you buy the repair kits? I had two of each for armor and weapons but I've used them all. I was kind of hoping leveling up was as easy as it was in witcher 2.

I get stuttering on my 970, especially when running around in a town or city. My FPS never really drops below 60 though.

I have everything on ultra except motion blur & blur are turned off, hairworks is also off.

I've read some about forcing adaptive vsync via Nvida control panel and setting max pre-rendered frames to 1...

anyone else with a 970 found ideal settings?

I read somewhere in the thread that someone else did this and set vsync off, frames to unlimited in the game and the settings in the control panel for nvidia to what you described and that it did help. I've been tempted to upgrade myself but I figure I'll just upgrade my whole rig a little later all at once.

The game is unplayable for me right now due to this weird stuttering.

Doesn't matter whether vsync is disabled or enabled. Like every few seconds there is a slight hitch.

^ this was caused by disabled Max Pre Rendered Frames: 1

I reset it to "1" and stutters are gone again

Game still doesnt feel as smooth as GTA5 despite both running at 30 locked

The in-game 30fps vsync feels like garbage.
OK...and you gave it even one second of actual play...why, exactly? If you have a nice gaming PC, and see such settings, go for 60FPS (or higher, depending on monitor). 30 FPS is just plain wrong.
If you have an Nvidia card, disable the in-game vsync and set framerate to unlimited.

In the control panel enabled Adaptive V-Sync (half refresh) and set Max Pre-rendered frames to 1. It's a much smoother 30fps lock. Then you can go wild with image quality settings and still have a better framerate than console versions.
Why? Adaptive V-sync sucks, and there is no need for it, at least up to 60FPS. I have prerendered frames forced to 1 globally, so I don't know if that affects TW3 or not (allowing higher royally screws up too many console ports for me to ever consider leaving it at default).

Use the in game frame cap to 60 FPS with Vysnc disabled and adjust the settings until you hit 60 FPS. That is the High Preset with Ultra textures and Hairworks disabled on my 780 Ti. Solid 60 with some dips to 55 ish. Mas pre-rendered frames is 1. Will test the new patch.

Nah man, I want to run the game at 30fps.

Maybe you need 60 fps in every single game, I don't.

Can't you just set all settings to ultra, except for hair works off, sharpening on high, vsync on and frames to unlimited..I did this on mine and it certainly dropped from 45-55fps to 30 or so in certain areas.

On my 970 I get between 45-70 riding around on my horse in the open world

On Ultra graphics with hairworks disabled, Post processing set to High

And yet most people might think im crazy but I prefer a locked 30fps over 45-70

My monitor maxes out at 60Hz an 1080P, therefor. V-sync at 60Hz is the correct maximum framerate, and 1920x1080 the correct resolution. If can I get 60FPS, setting it to 30 removes information, and makes it look worse, on top of that. If not, no har done, and still no tearing. Whether 60FPS is what I actually get is a different matter, and varies by game (both whether I'll get it at any settings, and whether it's worth lowering settings for it).
