It was the foundation of the three major religions, the crusades, now it's oil, this will never end.

More fuel for the oil portion of our addiction. Take the largest stocks:

As of 10/15/2007 the top 25 largest stocks in the world have - at least 7 of them (over 25%) are in the oil business.

The largest companies have the most influence on other things - right?

Well why on earth would Chevron, Gazprom, PetroChina, Exxon, Royal Dutch Shell, etc. want the world to get off of oil, when their trade is in oil?

While this is true - there will be a heavy focus on the middle east.

Green is a facade - oil is here to stay.

Well we should reduce our dependency on oil for most transportation (cars trucks) Because even if we used all electric cars or Hydrogen cars or whatever we will still need oil and lots of it but we should save it for things such as making plastics and other synthetics that require petroleum products. Air travel will be using fuel for the foreseeable future, as I cant see an electric powered jet liner anytime soon. But just think if we ran out of oil it mean that our addiction to plastics would have to be severely reduced, everything is made of plastics, computers, cell phones, cars, tvs, basically all consumer goods. There will always be a demand for petroleum products weather we use them in cars or not.

Oil is not here to stay. My prediction is that in 10 years 50% of cars will be hybrids, and in 30 years 90% of cars will be plug-in hybrids or all-electric.

Those energy companies will be the companies that provide the next great energy source.
So they all have a valid reason for getting off oil. Because they will be the first to market with a new product and get to set the price and barriers of entry.

One way we can do this is by telecommuting. Honestly how many people on this board see a requirement to be at your jobsite?

YAWWNNN!!!!

Dependency on oil is global. Japan, china and india are even more dependent on foreign oil than the USA.

Say how bout driving sumthing better, driving less... like not burning 3 gallons of oil to get one gallon of milk from walmart..

And we wont be running out of oil for the next three or four centuries.

OPEC keeps production low and demand high. Its a foolish strategy in the long run since it'll only hamper consumer growth of oil and mostly deprive india and china a few percentage points less of economic growth ( which again maybe a good thing since there is a danger of inflationary pressures and "overheating")

Plus they are VAST untapped reserves in the world
