Thermaltake Blue Orb II Question

Hi there

I'm a somewhat warm user of a Pentium D 3GHz processor and I'd really like to know if anyone has had good results with the [new] Thermaltake Blue Orb II cooler?
So far the only reviews I can find use AMDs for the test cpu, but their temps are nowhere near as hectic as the Pentium D's.

From what I can tell by other posts regarding the PD, it is a "flame thrower", hehe.

Overall I'm happy with the speed but I'd really like to curb the temp under load to prevent failure. I've pushed the chip to 80°C without any reported throttling from "Throttlewatch", but I'm really not comfortable with these kinds of temp levels as the max temp according to the sSpec is supposed to be 69.8°C.

At the moment I'm using a Gigabyte 3D Rocket, which is miles ahead of the standard cooler that shipped with the machine, but still not what I want.

So if any of you have used the Blue Orb II with a Pentium D, please post your findings.
It will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to AnandTech Forums Visor57.

I lurk and post here allmost everyday and this is the first mention of the Blue Orb II that
i've seen. It sure is a pretty blue color and pretty heavy @ 860g+.
The price is not all that bad.

The present top air HSFs on this forum seem to be the SI-120,XP-120,XP-90C,XP-90.
Of this lot the XP-90C is the heavy @ 680g w/o fan and a fan will add 120-140g.
Heatpipe HSF is where it's at right now.

I did not answer your question but did give you a bump.

Hehe, I didn't even notice the weight until you pointed it out.

The Gigabyte 3D Rocket that I have now is also an effective heatpipe design, but honestly I'm not very fond of the entire heatpipe trend.
I recently worked on an HP Proliant and one of the processors (Xeon) kept overheating with the slightest load. As it turns out, the cpu that was overheating had a faulty heatpipe hsf. This server has this form of heatsink as standard.
When I initially assembled the server, the heatsinks worked perfectly fine and the problem only surfaced a few months later whereapon the cpu behaved as if there wasn't an hsf present, which makes perfect sense because when the conduction agent leaks out, you have to rely on the minimal surface conductivity provided by the pipes alone! Not good.

Anyway, my paranoia regarding pipes aside, thanx for the bump - appreciate it

Pff, those fan stats are fudged for sure. 78 cfm at 17dBA? I'm calling BS on that one. If you really don't want heatpipes, just take a look at the Zalman 7700 series which TT was blatantly copying off of when they made this.

The specs i've seen rate the mainboard at 500g, anything more than that great care must
be used in moving the PC. Tall HSFs exert a torque on the board that has to be appreciated.

The XP- 90 and 120 have fins swaged and/or soldered into the base.

Your's is the first heatpipe falure posted here that i can recall. I never worked in comp repair
industry. The closest i got was repair of monitoring comp for stationary diesel power plants

After much fretting and reading i just ordered a XP-90C yesterday and to keep weight down
the fan will be suspended just off the HS by about .030".

Actualy it is Zalman who copied Thermaltake's design. Blue Orb has quite interesting design (similar to prescott stock cooler) so i guess it performs better than zalman7700.

Actually both copmpanies were formed in 1999 and from what I understand it was Thermaltake who copied zalman......
No they Blue orb doesn`t out perform the zalman!!
In fact the Zalman 7700 for along time was the standard......

Have a nice day!!

Thank you for all the feedback so far, although a bit off topic

My main interest at this point is how these coolers cope with the thermal burden from a Pentium D processor, as this rates as probably one of the hottest damn cpu's I've personally come across with a cooler attached! I knew the Prescotts ran a tad on the toasty side, but damn, the PD gives new meaning to hot...
My home PC is a P4+HT 2,4GHz 800FSB and it idles along at a comparatively frigid 25°C.

Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, are there any PD owners out there using either the Zalman 7700 series coolers or the spanking new Blue Orb II?
Another question is have any of you tried to use the above on an Intel D945GTP? This is board I'm using. The Zalman site does not list this mobo on the tested compatibility list for clearances, but this may just be due to the fact that they haven't updated the list in a while.

So, Thermaltake Blue Orb II or Zalman 7700 Series on Intel mobo? Who dunnit? :?
Be glad to hear someone's experience with them.
