Thinking about widescreen...2405fpw possibly?

Currently have a 19" sony LCD. The X-Brite technology is lovely. At some point in the future, perhaps when the right deal comes along, I might spring for a widescreen monitor. It seems like the Dell 2005FPW and the 2405FPW are solid candidates.

Is a 2005FPW really any better than a very solid 19" LCD? Or should I wait for a 2405FPW? And if I am going to spend the $700 or so to buy a 2405, why shouldn't I just spend ~$1K and get a huge LCD TV?

Don't have to answer all the questions, any will be fine

Concerning the LCD TV, you don't want one of those because their resolution is much lower than the 2405fpw.

The reason to get the 2005fpw is because it's widescreen, and it offers much higher resolution, 1680x1050 compared to 1280x1024...

That Sony one should actually look quite a bit better than the others because of the xbrite. It's too bad those monitors only come in 19" sizes for desktops at the moment.

if you are considering the 2405FPW, you have to consider the cost of a graphics card capable of running the behemoth of a display.

true, but if you compare it to the 30" apple cinema display, and the graphics requirement for that, the 2405FPW seems like a super deal.

you can actually run the 30" with a $200 nVidia card.

I'm still confused on how the 2405fpw performs in games in non-native resolutions. Some people say it ain't so good and some say it is fine. Anyone here have first hand experience at running the 2405fpw at 1600x1200 and 1280x1024 in games?

I'm thinking about upgrading to a 2405fpw but I want my 6800GT card I just bought 3 weeks ago to work with it in games.

I do, the 2405 scales exceptionally well at non native resolutions.

I am in the same boat. Isn't it a pain to get games that don't support native widescreen to play on a 2005fpw or 2405fpw?

With 1600x1200 you'll probably just want to run with black bars on the sides to mantain the aspect ratio so no scaling there. As for other resolutions, it really comes down to how picky you are but I hear those new Dells have better scaling that most. You also always have the option of running at 960x600 or 800x600 to mantain a 4:1 pixel ratio and avoid scaling issues as well.

Well I had a couple of games boot into 1600x1200 scaled, and I was surprised by how well it scaled to the sides of the screen.
for FPS, I wouldn't play like that, but I was impressed, because it looked better than any 1280x1024 scaled on the 2001FP I had.

you'll probably keep it displaying at pixel-per-pixel (rotated widescreen effect), because the picture is just that good on this thing.
But it is pretty subjective, as to what's acceptable or not.

Hmmm....from these responses it sounds like a 2005FPW might be a good move from my Sony!
