The pomegranate is not a well-known fruit in New York City?

can't say that I've ever seen it in a mainstream grocery store around here, though they probably have them in ethnic markets.

They have them here in Florida here at Albertson's and Kash n Karry.

Also known as a Chinese Apple. Used to eat them as a child. Havent had one in many years and I think I may have to grab one next time Im at the store.

Its not a chinese fruit though. Its all over asia.

By that same token, the Chinese Gooseberry isn't really a chinese fruit either, but that's the original name of the kiwi fruit...

The have them in NYC at Stop n Shop & Pioneer, plus all the usual corner fruit stores/stands. $1 a piece is a good price for a big one. Alot of times you see them 2/$5 or $3 a pop for small ones.

Anyone remember watching Conan the Barbarian cartoon? Rarrrw, pomegranate, rarrrrww!

Poms are decent tasting, but not worth the effort. Anything that hard to eat probably shouldn't be eaten.

Hard? Cut it to 4 pieces, put your thumbs on the two corners, use the 2 middle fingers to push in, and it'll open up most of the seeds.
Gaggingrunt means you have to do more than pull a tab.

That's weird, you can usually find them at any Gristedes, etc. However, they are seasonal; it may be getting late in the season so there are less available.

Did you go to Fairway?

My neighbor has a pom tree in his front yard, and can't give the dammed things away...so, many just rot on the tree/on the ground.

I don't know about it being to food of the gods, as one poster suggested, but I do know that the fruit was well known to the ancient Israelites, and that the Temple had quite a few of them carved into the walls. I've only tried one, which I liked, but I thought it would have been better just as a juice.

they are nice to look at but not so nice to eat. I mean you get what, a drop of juice and no flesh from each "seed"!?
