my computer got zapped by lightning a few weeks back. It was flaky for a while but weirdly seemed to be ok - especially after i replaced the graphics card.

Today it wouldn't boot and after a fair amount of farting around I noticed one of the small capacitors near the graphics card pcie slot had leaked and corroded the board.

So is it possible that a lightning strike is responsible? The computer was unplugged but the monitors were not.

it was an x58 board with a xeon x5650 @ 3.8ish ghz. I either get another x58 board or upgrade the whole system. I was trying to hold out for skylake (or even skylake E). Any thoughts?

"Caps" leaking, could be just old or cheap or your left it on all the time. You could have the board recaped, see if it will live. Much cheaper then getting another X58 board, as they seem to be pretty high priced.
To recap the board prolly around $20(depending on how many similar caps), if you can do it.

That said you could get a cheap dual core and mini itx(what eva you call um), for less then $100. Use your same memory and everything else, when the time comes for skylake sell what you used.


For the price its worth trying to re cap the board.

i think its the corrosion thats the problem, not the cap.

The cap is the root problem. But you are correct if the corrosion has eaten away some of the traces on the board. If so it is trash, unless you can solder jumpers between the eaten trace ends.

So quick to toss stuff, clean the corrosion off with a nutralizer and tooth brush. Clean n wash the board, hang dry. Use black nail polish to seal the traces that have been exposed.
Or go buy new...........Its yer life.
