In over a decade of using computers, I have NEVER had a virus or spyware (beyond cookies). NEVER.

I've had one, and since then I've never gone without antivirus.

Often, I have been made paranoid by people like you and installed AVs. NEVER has any AV program hit on anything on any of my systems.

Since the above incident, I've never seen a virus on my system either. However, I'm not taking any chances the next time some script kiddy in Korea decides to launch his latest creation upon an unsuspecting, unpatched world.

We agree to disagree.

See my other post- what if you're out of the house?

I'm behind a router. If I wasn't I would use a firewall. A firewall is not an AV.

Agreed.

I reissue my challange:

Send me to one website that puts spyware or a virus on my machine without my permission.

To date, no one has been able to do this.

Virus infection and spyware infections are caused by carelessness and user error. Period.

I'll agree 100% with the spyware infections. Virus infections, however, are slightly different, as I'm sure you're aware. Referring back to the Blaster incident- let's assume someone like BigSm00th isn't running a router, and of course, isn't running any antivirus. If he misses the update for Blaster, then he's likely to get infected.

However, let's also assume that a virus is created that exploits a weakness in Windows that hasn't been patched yet. What are you going to do?

dopefiend, i see your point about being away from the house for 2 days. but you could still have it set to autoinstall updates.

i do have a router, i just forgot to mention that.

I'm connected to IRC, AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, and ICQ, listening to music, reading ATOT, have MBM on, Coolmon, Gmail Notifier, Antivirus, and Bittorrent, and I have 32 processes :frown:

You're going to catch it, because there are no virus def's yet?

Heuristics.

Then, like most people here, you're well-informed. I still disagree with your lack of antivirus though.

LOL making fun of IE's resources before FF.

FF = full time hog, with just 1 window/tab open.

Here (not ridiculous)

Opera, however, if left open for too long (i.e. upwards of 2-3 hours), can sometimes balloon to around 100-120mb RAM usage (but that's still with 5-6 tabs open)

i will concede my point and say you are probably right, it would be safer to use the anti-virus, but something about it annoys me. i am just very careful what i do and dont open. basically i do my best to avoid problems.

as i said, you get 1 free i-told-you-so when i post i got a virus. no one else gets one though...just you

Oh, and i never was affected by Blaster. And I had no AV at the time. It was after the hype of that that I bought a subscription to Norton... and let it run out.

Still nothing.

Very gracious of you
As I'm sure you're aware, I'm careful what I open too. The other day, however, I was investigating a less-than-reputable site and the file that was sent to me (note: after clicking Download) was a self-running executable that installed several pieces of spyware :|
This was on my work machine though, so it didn't matter and was gone in a matter of minutes. Still...

as i said, you get 1 free i-told-you-so when i post i got a virus. no one else gets one though...just you

Heh
You get a "OMG N00B" to me if I ever get infected despite the antivirus protection that I have.

You were very lucky.

In my last job, we had a guy who bought a laptop. Came back a few hours later complaining that it was shutting down. He had Blaster in the first few minutes of getting on the internet.

The laptop was replaced (God knows why, but the managers bent over backwards once he started literally screaming about it being "shipped with viruses installed" ), and he came back again, with Sasser.

Amusingly enough, he contracted it while updating his brand-new copy of Norton Antivirus.

Another time, the works machine was being reformatted. Connected it to the company network after installing McAfee etc to let it update, and got distracted for a minute or two. Turned back to find it shutting down.

I don't see how it was luck. None of my machines got it. None of my family's machines got it.

Of course, all were behind firewalls, be they routers, or Window's firewall.

As I mentioned, the works machine was infected. That was connected to a corporate LAN, which was shielded by a hardware firewall.

If it can get through that, then you got lucky, plain and simple.

This is such a fanboy thread, here's proof. 8 windows open with ie6 and firefox, firefox takes up more memory. And no, tabbed browsing doesnt help.

How much do you wanna bet it was infected from within the LAN?

Hardware firewalls are useless if someone brings an infected computer into the LAN.

What does Page Faults column mean?
:Q

I'm not entirely sure. I thought a page fault was a crash?

LMAO.... omg.

It occurs when a "page" of memory was not found in physical memory, and the VM system had to hit the hard disk to retrieve it.

so is it a good, bad, or neutral thing?

its neutral, it just means that what windows needs isn't in memory, so it has to retrieve it from the hard disk (said above)
edit: its been discussed already, sorry for not reading the whole thread guys!

Hey, it's usually the most obvious answers that elude us when we're wrapped up in a situation. Happens to me all the time.
