yup. most games work in widescreen well, wether natively or with a hack, but beware many ea games dont take the effort to support it natively and thus the image can look pretty funny. In NFS Most Wanted, there is a widescreen hack and the 3d objects look fine but the guages become all stretched and ugly looking.

Battlefield 2 is the only game I need from EA.

I can go for a 24" widescreen monitor, but the problem is the resolution. If I go for the massive 1900x1200, then keeping up with the framerates would be pretty tough at good quality settings. Of course I could turn the settings down and not the resolution, but that would defeat the purpose of getting a new computer.

Well, I need advice on the resolution of the monitor. If I do go for a widescreen monitor, then do you think I should go for a native 1650x1080 (or whatever that one is) or for the full-blown 1900x1200?

in 2d 1900x1200 is realyl nice. websites and stuff are displayed well. in 3d 1650x1080 will be a struggle. I dont think even the almighty x1900xt will be able to cope with that in ut2007 or many upcoming games like elder scrolls oblivion. As for current games you'll be fine. maybe a sli or crossfire setup os on order here?

edit: but remember the drivers arent realyl final for x1900xts so more perfromance may be on tap that have not been unleashed with the unoptomized 6.1s. maybe 6.2 will let us see bigger gains in performance and 1650x1080 will work fine.

It's up to you on this one, 24" is wonderful, there's no two ways about it, but you will have to get used to not having any eye candy on or the resoultion turned down. (Not as much of a problem with current generation LCDs as it used to be) I wanted a 24" LCD myself, but decided to go for 2x19" instead. Can't say i regret it but i do wish i had the widescreen.

Judging something by newegg ratings is rather silly. The colour isn't good as it's a 6bit pannel and it's got rather poor brightness (i think).

Look in the video forum for the recomended lists, or one of the tens of "which LCD screen should i buy!?" threads

Granted, but it's getting rave reviews all over the net. And the only brightness problem I've heard about it is that it's too bright out of the box and needs to be turned down.

I took a look at some benchies on Anandtech, and the X1900XT seemed to work fine with 1920x1250 (stange resolution) but again as mwmorph said that was for the current games.

I think I'll stick with a 19 or 20" monitor, with a 1280x1024 resolution or something like that. SLI is a total waste IMO, as it's tough to keep up (and no I don't want Crossfire either). I'd rather keep fullscreen and the benefits of a high-end machine rather than go widescreen at the moment.

If you want more than a 19" then you could get a 1600x1200 20" screen. There are some rather nice ones around if you look for them.

Very true, but would I not run into the same problems keeping up with so many pixels in future games?

Yes you would, but i find 1280x1040 a bit small tbh. It does mean that you sidestep the widescreen issues and the problems with limited height that the smaller widescreens have.

Widescreen i would stay away from the non big brands such as Sceptre/Acer etc... Personally i have no experience with widescreen LCDs but i did a little research as i was considering buying one. Main reason i didnt is the same thing you posted about not being able to keep up with the resolution in a year or so.

Well I'm getting quite tired of picking one piece, so I think I'll just read that thread and get the Samsumg 940b. Widescreen gaming would have been nice but yeah it's still new territory and I really don't want to have to tinker with my games all the time just to see some of them properly scale the POV and the others just be stretched.

1280x1024 is huge anyways. Freaks use 1600.
You can always add a second monitor if you need space...19+17 or 19+19= way more than a widescreen at a smaller price.
