Really? Interesting...I can get mine to 4.2, after that, motherboard power delivery becomes an issue. Disabling 4 cores gets me 4.3. 4.4 boots, but freezes once you get to the desktop.
You can get it to pass prime95 at 4.2? What kind of voltages? If so, you're definitely in the minority. I guess I could boot it at 4.3 and beyond but stress testing at those frequencies is a different story.

Yes for 4.2. 4.3 now throttles (in prime95 only) with the current beta BIOS release. Previously 4.2 throttled, neither were/are an issue with the CPU, but rather, the motherboard. I've seen a few hit 4.4@1.4375 without issue...though a hard wall exists beyond that. Also, my Enermax can't deal with 4.1 or 4.2 all that well, let alone 4.3, so I typically run at 4.0. 4.2 tends to stabilize around 80C in push/pull config...but then again, 16 cores, 4+ GHz. A year ago it would have been a pipe dream unless you were talking about bulldozer...

Anyone try sub ambient cooling? Not suicide LN2 runs but cascade chillers keeping cores around 0C at full load.

Hit the last straw today, new unRAID version is out with fixes to Spectre\Meltdown. It is NOT playing well with this setup, array is corrupted; I'm ordering some Intel stuff to replace it. I have backups, but this combined with broken pass-through (the whole reason I bought it) has driven me mad. I've been patient up to this point, but I'm tired of feeling like a beta tester.
I really, REALLY want to like this build, and I really wanted to support AMD; but this platform is broken outside of a windows environment.

So heads up, once the new parts come in I'll be putting my Threadripper 1950x and AsRock x399 Taichi up for sell.

Built a 1950X system this weekend. Used some parts from an existing build (namely the GPU, SSD, and HDD) and found a good deal on the CPU and Motherboard (open box) from Microcenter. GPU and RAM prices are both crazy still, so upgrade in RAM and swapping out the 1070 Ti will happen when I can afford it/when next gen comes out. CPU staying at a reasonable ~50C under load (Handbrake) at 4GHz. Fairly quiet with the fans running at 30% speed max, but not entirely silent due to the front mesh on this case (great for airflow, though).

Threadripper "Emma Frost" Build Specifications:

I am curious.
Is anybody running a TR setup that is air cooled?

Everyone seem to be going with liquid cooling for the CPU.
I am building a workstation based on the 1920X, but I want to minimize noise, and the arctic freezer 33tr seems up to the task as air cooler.
Curious to know

The TR4 specific Noctua coolers get pretty good reviews, the biggest one is even competitive with some liquid coolers.

Let me know. I would be interested. My 3rd TR build.

Hah! I'm waiting for the 2950X. That one is sure to be a gem. At any rate, my machine booted at 4.4 GHz. I had to up the voltages to 1.475V (bad idea I know, I just wanted to see if it would boot). I ran CPU-Z and got a single core score of 519. I tried to run Cinebench, but the system abruptly shut off. I only have an 850 watt power supply, but I doubt the CPU pulled that much juice. I'm thinking motherboard power delivery. An OC would have frozen or the app would have crashed. Anyways, I went back to 4.1 and discovered that in the brief time I had the chip at that voltage, degradation had hit. Each 100 MHz now requires slightly more voltage then the last. where as 4.2 would need only 1.425V, now it requires 1.45V, 4.1: 1.375V vs 1.35V, 4.0: 1.275V vs 1.225V (!). So I'm done experimenting with this chip for now. Back to 4.1 GHz.

EDIT: Looking back at my notes, 4.2 GHz originally only required 1.375V when I got that chip. *OUCH*.

And that is why I stopped at 4.1ghz. Not worth the hassle even though I have the cooling capacity. I'm hoping ryzen+ clocks better. A 2950x at 4.5+ with some IPC gains would be a gem indeed.

Yes, I don't really care all that much, if I had fried it I would have called it a learning experience and I would have ordered another. I just wanted to see how hard I can push it. I can still do 4.1ghz stable 24/7. One thing I noticed though, Ryzen scales like crazy with higher clock speeds. At 4.3 GHz, my 1950X gets a much higher CPU-Z, Cinebench 11/15 single core, aida64 various benchmark results, etc. vs a 7700k clocked at 4.4 GHz. The CPU-Z results in particular were interesting.

for the ASRock X399 Taichi MotherBoard, did everyone connect both 12 volt connectors to the PSU? Or just the 8 Pin? Hmmm, the docs say please hook it up... My PSU has both cords... I wonder if having them both hooked up will cause any problems?

I connected everything up minus the 6 pin by the SATA ports since I don’t run multiple high draw PCIe cards.
Just connect everything up, it won’t hurt anything.

If you don't hook them both up, it won't boot.

New build... all 32 threads running full tilt! Enermax keeping it cool at 55C! Impressive! About an hour in now... no crashes, hiccups, weird shit... nothing!

Yes, the Enermax AIO is pretty amazing. Run the AIDA 64 benchmarks if they are available in the demo, it's rather amusing watching a 4-4.1 GHz Threadripper beat out every Intel chip, including 20 core Xeons and the 8700k, in most of those tests.

I believe my TR running @ 4.2 was only beat out by the 20 core Xeon in 2 of the tests, and no other Intel chip was able to surpass it. Sometimes TR beat the 20 core xeon by almost 40%.

Threadripper is a beast for sure, with these board could take EPYC chips. a 32 core workstation would be beastly.
I just wish they played better with linux, or at least unRAID.
The 7980xe and x299 Taichi will be here today, really don't want to get rid of the Threadripper now that I've had some time to cool off. Maybe I'll make it a distributed computing box, anyone else doing this? Haven't done DC projects in any meaningful capacity in years.

Yes that is my 1024x800 Flysight Drone FPV monitor. As the Dad I really should put my foot down and kick someone off my TVs/computer.

Sigh.

Of course! I think anyone that is thinking of a 16 core CPU, has to have a use for it, besides mining.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_distributed_computing_projects

Mark is doing folding@home projects with all his gear. What else are you going to do with your time... Do good for science and game... what else is there to do in life?

Just got my pre-order in for FC5! LOL....

But on a serious note: I used the prepackaged thermal paste that came with the cooler. Thinking about trying Arctic Silver.

I’ll sit on it a few days before I decide for sure what I’ll do.
BTW if you are looking for an AS5 alternative, Gelid GC extreme is generally better

I use the 32 threads for WCG or Rosetta@home. I use GPU's for F@H, as the PPD is better. My two threadripper boxes are both running Linux mint 18.3, and they work great ! Both boxes EACH have 2 GTX1080TI FTW3 cards, so thats 4 total. Just from this 4 cards I get 5 million ppd, and not sure on WCG, but they do very well.

Edit: Both boot off of an NVME 2280 SSD (dual boot with win 10), but the linux install is on a sata drive, while windows is on the NVME drive.
