I like mint, but I haven't been able to get live CDs to work for a while. Mint 18.3 shipped with kernel 4.10 on release. uname -r will tell you what kernel version you're running. I thought it was kernel 4.15 that you needed.

Both of those only update packages, kernel upgrades seem to be a bit more in depth and outside of what I’ve delt with so I’ll leave that to the experts.

Der8auer delidded a Threadripper and sanded down each block. They all have transistors.

He recently delidded and Epyc and a 1900X and sent them off for X-ray analysis. Threadripper is different from Epyc but not by much.

Well.... Not quite he sanded down his pre-production model. So it's not a hundred percent sure if retail version don't include the the spacers. But the dream of a 32 core Threadripper is a pipedream (well until AMD makes 16c dies).

Well, my new memory came in today. So the old 3200 cas 14 bdie would do nothing over 2133, and take forever to boot. Put in the 3600 (I think also bdie), set it to XMP profile@3600, and BAM, boots and runs perfectly, but I did have to put it down to 3466, like my other threadripper. This stuff is the king (within reason)

Put in the 3600 (I think also bdie), set it to XMP profile@3600, and BAM, boots and runs perfectly, but I did have to put it down to 3466, like my other threadripper. I haven't fired my Threadripper up yet, just got my Heatkiller waterblock and I'm waiting for parts for my case. I feel better attempting a kernel upgrade on a fresh install, though I guess one could make an image/backup before proceeding.

For some reason, its just works the best (for the fast speed ram)

It worked at 3200 CL14 from launch on Ryzen. It's just an unusually good IC that can handle very aggressive timings which is why all the best memory kits use it. And it's a good fit for Ryzen/Threadripper.

I've personally used the following kinds of "B-die" with no issue in Ryzen and Threadripper systems:
3200 CL14 8GB Single Rank DIMMs
3600 CL16 8GB Single Rank DIMMs
3600 CL15 8GB Single Rank DIMMs

Disclaimer: I can't get 3600 CL15 stable but 3333 CL14 or 3466 CL15 should be doable on most rigs. If all else fails 3200 CL14 is a good setting.

Wow, I thought it was expensive when I bought a 2x8GB kit for $170 for my 1800X (2x16GB DDR4 2400 FlareX was $200). Do you have any Ryzen systems you can use those sticks in?

Yes, but one has 3200 cl14 bdie, the 1700 could use a little faster, its running 2933

Don't know if you'd see that much improvement with 3200 over 2933. I'm looking at 16GB sticks for my machines, but it's a little expensive to be buying kits looking to find one that works at 3200 or higher.

Wish I would've bought more GPUs when the cost was reasonable, could've sold them to pay for RAM. I didn't think the availability and price would get so bad, especially on the higher end. I guess I could camp out waiting for stock near MSRP now that I'm retired, but I'd rather be doing other things.
