This is software that copies files, not detects errors. When it started copying, the time numbers were based on the access speed at the outside of the drive, which is always going to be fastest. When the software runs into a slowdown due to a failing sector, it's only going to work that into its average thus far, and so on. It still won't known what lies ahead.

Well, it continuously got longer and longer a few times a minute for hours - it's not as if it made an adjustment to a more accurate estimate.
